Notes from Hitachino: "We are using Mandarin hops from Germany and using special orange which add Japanese orange taste. We call this special orange Fukure Mikan. This orange were wild mandarin orange which have almost 1500 years history and only cultivated in Tsukuba Mountain near our brewery. Fuku is 'symbol of happiness’ and Kure is 'coming’ and Mikan is orange. So Fukure Mikan means "orange which will bring forth happiness!"'
On tap at The Porter in the ATL.
This pours a translucent, glassy gold (just a shade darker than a Kölsch), with little to no turbidity or descending carbonation and capped by a thin, cloudy bank of foam that leaves faint traces of lacing. Nose is really not much besides orange. But, not bright, clamorous citrus, rather its like straight up orange grove: vegetal, earthy, lingering and buried beneath other ambient factors. Taste follows logically -- crisp but dirty (again similar to a Kölsch but without any bothersome lagered characteristics), spicy with clove and ginger and supported by a definitive but never strident base of subdued, basically jammy, orange. Feel is too aggressively carbonated and hot for me (maybe this should just be around 4% instead of around 6%) but it gets better as it warms and its really just a mere distraction instead of a clear dealbreaker.
