12 oz. bottle into a Samuel Smith 10 oz. nonic glass.

Appearance: Certainly opaque, but with a quickly fading head that doesn't really stick to the glass at all, which was surprising.

Smell: A nice mix of some char, a bit of melted milk chocolate, mild berries, and slightly acrid coffee.

Taste: A nice balance between the char, mild milk sweetness, and some ripe berries. Finishes slightly both bitter and sweet, with good lasting char flavors.

Mouthfeel: With the lack of retention regarding the pour, this may be way. It's not off-putting, but I feel like it should be a lot creamier, as the medium body seems a little erratic as far as carbonation goes. Could be better, but again, not too terribly off-putting.

Drinkability: Could be a good go-to come winter time. Easy drinking and balanced enough to go back again.

This brew was poured from the bottle into a generic pint glass. It showed a deep chocolate brown coloring, sporting a one finger head of chunky, similarly colored deep foam. The nose was cooling, sweet, and malt-forward, with gently roasted brown, caramel, and black chocolate malts, syrupy cloy of sweetened creamer, lactic acidity, raw chestnuts, and vanilla icing. The taste hits you in much the same fashion, with white sugary cloy of a simple syrup, browned toffee and caramel candies, softer roast on the black and chocolate malts than expected, with harsher metallics and mint leaf freshness rumbling up from far back, and through to the aftertaste. The body was medium, and the feel was creamy, frothy, and mustachable to match. Drinkability was fine, as the beer disappeared smoothly even after a heavy meal.

Overall, this was enjoyed as a group with the groomsmen-to-be from our wedding party. After enjoying a curiously calming and leisurely 2:00 AM stroll around Spanish Harlem, we found ourselves in the possession of a six pack of this guy, and although not all of the gentlemen present traditionally enjoy “dark” beers, we each were able to enjoy this one. Our guess is that it was due to the cloying, syrupy sugariness of the flavoring, but with just enough balance from the metallics, roastiness, and lactic bitterness to keep any one thing from being too offensive. The nose smelled on the sweet side, but it’s main constitution was otherwise reminiscent of a silky American porter. While most of you won’t find yourself on the far north side of Manhattan in the middle of the night, this beer served wonderfully as a nightcap, persuading even the toughest of customers.
