Appearance - Dark Brown liquid with tan head

Smell - black licorice, roasted malts, cream

Taste - black licorice, roasted malts, burnt cream

Mouthfeel - medium bodied, medium carbonation, sweetness upfront, some sort of burnt sensation at the tail end, almost to the point of being acrid. Flavors lack balance and finesse

Overall - not very impressed with this one, flavors appear to be unbalanced and unrefined. Would consider trying this again on draft.

Price Point - $2/12 oz single

This brew was poured from the bottle into a generic pint glass. It showed a deep chocolate brown coloring, sporting a one finger head of chunky, similarly colored deep foam. The nose was cooling, sweet, and malt-forward, with gently roasted brown, caramel, and black chocolate malts, syrupy cloy of sweetened creamer, lactic acidity, raw chestnuts, and vanilla icing. The taste hits you in much the same fashion, with white sugary cloy of a simple syrup, browned toffee and caramel candies, softer roast on the black and chocolate malts than expected, with harsher metallics and mint leaf freshness rumbling up from far back, and through to the aftertaste. The body was medium, and the feel was creamy, frothy, and mustachable to match. Drinkability was fine, as the beer disappeared smoothly even after a heavy meal.

Overall, this was enjoyed as a group with the groomsmen-to-be from our wedding party. After enjoying a curiously calming and leisurely 2:00 AM stroll around Spanish Harlem, we found ourselves in the possession of a six pack of this guy, and although not all of the gentlemen present traditionally enjoy “dark” beers, we each were able to enjoy this one. Our guess is that it was due to the cloying, syrupy sugariness of the flavoring, but with just enough balance from the metallics, roastiness, and lactic bitterness to keep any one thing from being too offensive. The nose smelled on the sweet side, but it’s main constitution was otherwise reminiscent of a silky American porter. While most of you won’t find yourself on the far north side of Manhattan in the middle of the night, this beer served wonderfully as a nightcap, persuading even the toughest of customers.
