I'm conducting a three-way taste test of milk stouts tonight. This is the second beer in the line up, with the others being Butternuts' Moo Thunder Stout and Left Hand's Milk Stout.

This beer had a fizzy beige head that dissipated pretty quickly, about the same as the Left Hand stout. It's pretty much all black, but when I hold it to the light a TINY amount of brown shows.

The aroma has some sort of red wine thing going on, reminiscent of Anchor Porter or the Famous Taddy Porter. Maybe I smell some lactose, but I don't think I would have detected it if I didn't know it was a milk stout.

The taste, once again, reminds me of those aforementioned porters: red wine. Earlier tonight I read a thread where the OP said he had a bad bottle of Anchor Porter and said it had a vinegar taste. The power of suggestion may have planted that taste in my mind, but I'm also tasting that. I taste a little milk chocolate on the finish, but it's overpowered by the wine-y and vinegar flavors.

This beer does have a better mouthfeel. Not too thin, not too viscous.

The taste profile makes me wonder how fresh this bottle is. With no freshness date on the bottle, I can't adjust my score to reflect any possible degradation from age. I can drink this, but I probably won't be revisiting this beer after I finish the six pack.

Black and thick with a big tan head. Burnt malts on the nose with scents including licorice, bitter coffee, and black chocolate with a phenolic presence. Smells are okay until an big whiff of alcohol strikes the nostrils. Big, chewy, creamy mouthfeel. All im really getting taste wise is some bitter coffee and black chocolate up front with a barely detectable hop presence which manages to balance things out nicely. Finishes clean and dry with a slightly milky taste.

Okay but nothing to write home about.

Look: Black and totally opaque with just over a 1/2 inch head and pretty good retention

Smell: There is a pretty heavy dose of lactose sweetness on the nose and some hidden chocolate

Taste: The taste of this beer is just copious amounts of lactose which leads to an insanely sweet flavor profile. Has some chocolate and coffee notes but they are pretty well hidden by the lactose and don't really show up until the beer warms up

Mouthfeel: Just a touch under medium body and mildly carbonated

Overall: This is definitely not my favorite milk stout. I found it overly sweet but for the price it is worth a try

a - a nice dark brown, near black pour with a quickly disappearing dirty 1 finger thick head...

s - a nice amount of coco on the nose actually, some sugar

t - bit of roasted malt, slight hint of coffee, sugars, coco, but overall flavors are a bit watered down maybe?

m - lighter to medium in body.. pretty smooth drinking

o - pretty decent milk stout...not in my top 5 though...

A - poured with a small head of light brown foam on top of an opaque, dark brown body. The foam fades quickly and leaves light lace.

S - dark malt and caramel with some nutty toffee.

T - dark, sweet caramel up front with some bittersweet chocolate. Sweet, black bread in the middle and a finish full of chocolate, caramel and a hint of smoky coffee.

M - moderately thick, slightly oily body, and a sweet finish.

D - dark and mild with a nice combination of dark sugar and roasted malt.

SliverX handed this one to me while at Premier Gourmet in Buffalo so I could put it beside my bottle of Joe Mama's. Thanks for the heads up man!

From a bottle into a snifter.

APPEARANCE: A dark brown, almost black pour yields a one finger, thin looking, loose, fizzy tan head with terrible retention. Cola head fizzes down quickly to a ring and slight wisp. Black body and lots of carbonation evident for the style. A ring and slight wisp remain with unrelenting carbonation all over the place. Horrible head and almost all wrong. At least it’s dark.

SMELL: Roasted notes, lactose, cream and some latte coffee notes. Medium strength and luckily smells like a milk stout.

TASTE: Less impressive than the nose, if you can believe it. Some light roasted notes and a touch of lactose sugar, but very little else. A light hint of cream at the swallow and a bit of coffee and cream linger for a second and are gone. Extremely dry finish, though a touch of bitterness lingers. Nothing wrong with it per se, but just generally boring.

PALATE: Medium body and higher levels of carbonation. Not creamy enough really, a little prickly going down as well, and finishes a touch sticky. Too light and prickly, unfortunately.

OVERALL: This was generally lousy. The only saving grace was the nose, and that’s just because at least it smelt like a milk stout. The look was atrocious and the feel disappointing at best, while the flavor was basically just flavor in name. Hopefully this was just a lousy batch and other incarnations are not this uneventful. On to the bigger brother...

On-tap at Prime 16 into a shaker pint.

A: The body is black but does allow some light to come through, illuminating it with deep persimmon glints; above is a thin cap of fine light-brown foam that sticks around admirably and leaves tons of lace. Excellent.

S: Sweet lactose, light chocolate, and some almost spicy cocoa powder aromas. Pretty nice.

T: Follows the nose: milky-sweet at first, followed by some chocolate malt and a bit of spice. Bittersweet finish. Enjoyable, but unremarkable.

M: Extremely lively, somewhat prickly. So carbonated I can’t even tell what kind of body it might have. Medium?

O: Solid milk stout; I won’t be ordering it again, but I’m not sorry I got it. Definitely worth a shot if you like the style.
