Had this beer at Ye Olde Fighting Cocke in St. Albans England. This is the (or one of the) oldest Public (Pub) places in England. Very neat old octagonal structure, with several beers on tap.

On my recent trip to Europe (Germany & England), this was by far the best beer that I had. With all of the micro-brews in the US, it seems to me that most of the US brews are more interesting and have more character than any beer that I tried in these 2 countries. Perhaps I know where to look in the US, since most of my European brews weren't significantly different from Budweiser.

Not sure how to translate English to American, but this "Cornish Ale" sure tasted like an IPA to me. And surprisingly, like a West-Coast IPA ... it definitely had strong citrus flavors. Be curious as to where they get their hops. Sure seemed like Citra and Cascade.

The flavor was smooth, with a medium hoppiness for an IPA. There were definitely the citrus (grapefruit) flavors as noted early. The appearance and mouthfeel were consistent with a high quality IPA. I tend to find that several IPA's have a metal after-taste ... that was pleasently absent from this beer (good).

For me ... I could not detect an aroma with this beer. It almost seemed odorless. All I could conclude was that they do not dry-hop their beer.

Nevertheless, I found this to be a very enjoyable IPA, and look forward to having it again in the future. And this was my favorite beer out of 10+ that were tried on this European adventure.

Tawny color, faint haze, thin cap of fine bubbles that really lasted. Solid sheds of lace on the glass. Balanced and mild aroma, a bit of earthiness and English malt character. Same in the flavor, along with mild bitterness and slight dryness. Medium bodied, low carbonation, decent texture. Overall, an enjoyable pint.

A 500ml bottle with a BB of Sept 2014. Picked up a little while back from a supermarket. A classic pale ale that shares both modern and traditional influences.

Poured into a straight pint glass. A golden-amber hue with faint haze and plentiful carbonation. Yields a decent head of creamy white foam that lasts for a minute or two before settling as a patchy surface layer. Aroma of floral hops with hints of grass/hay, faint fruitiness, ale yeast, biscuity malt and a touch of earthiness. Relatively subtle but pleasant.

Tastes of light caramel malt with a floral hop character and a crisp, dry finish. Notes of flowery hops, grass/hay, subtle white pepper, biscuity grain, fruity ale yeast and stewed hops. Well-attenuated, followed by a mild bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth, tingly and dry, with spritzy carbonation and decent body. Lightly astringent, accompanied by an aftertaste of grassy hops, earthy yeast and faint malt.

A nicely-balanced pale ale with a light, hoppy character. Looks alright, while the aroma and flavour are a satisfying blend of grassy hops, fruity ale yeast and malt. Body is OK; a tad thin but it suits the style. Quenches a thirst, particularly on a hot day. I can also attest that this is very nice on cask. Worth sampling if you come across it.

500ml bottle. Guiness Pint glass. Brass color, clear appearance. White crown shows fairly good retention. Pale malt, subtle toasted, orange & citric aromas. Slight toasted flavor, hints of tropical fruit & floral bitterness at first sip. Light to medium body. Moderate to soft carbonation. Oily to watery texture. Notes of orange pulp, citric zest, grapefruit & raspberry in the middle. Sweet dry finish. Fruity aftertaste. Easy drinkable & suggested for a nice beer session.

Bought in a bottle, poured into a pint glass.

Appearance: Warm, gold with a touch of red. Hardly any bubbles rising, fair bit of a head from my lack of pouring prowess.

Smell: Smells okay, similar to lager but a bit nicer.

Taste: The starting point is similar to lager, but it is a deeper perhaps nuttier taste.

Feel: Feels wet. Nothing wrong with this one.

Very nice and it goes down very easily.
