Coffee Pumpkin Ale

A pumpkin ale with the attitude of a world-weary barista, Punkuccino packs a short shot of Stumptown coffee toddy in your pint with just a shake of cinnamon and nutmeg. Pale, Bown, Biscuit, C-77 Crystal, Chocolate and Kiln-Coffee malts provide the body, German Northern Brewer lends a touch of bitterness, and lactose sweetens just a touch. Three pumpkin additions, in the mash, kettle and fermenter.

Location: DiCicco's Pelham
Draught/Bottle: Bottle
Glassware: Snifter

Appearance: Very dark brown in color nearing black. Highlights of a light brown or even a very dark ruby. Only the edges let in even a hint of light. Tan to Sandy colored head with below average retention. Light cling.
Aroma: Lightly roasted coffee. Cinnamon, vanilla, clove, brown sugar are all among the spices I'm getting from this beer. When the beer was colder I thought I got aromas of pumpkin but I can longer detect them everything else has come to the front.
Taste:The coffee flavor is wildly pleasant. It has a very nice roast. A little sweet chocolate comes out in the flavor alongside the seasonal spices but especially the brown sugar.
Mouthfeel: Medium bodied, medium high carbonation. The carbonation is well represented and places all the flavors of the beer all over the tongue. Even with all the adjuncts the beer still has a remarkable wet and thirst quenching aspect to it.

Poured from a bottle.

Appearance - Dark, almost black body with a hint of ruby. Minimal head disappears quickly leaving some wispy foam. Some lacing.

Smell - Chocolate and coffee. Some slight pumpkin notes.

Taste - More subdued than the nose. Coffee and mild chocolate up front. Lingering notes of chocolate on the end.

Feel - Medium body, medium carbonation.

Overall - Enjoyable non pretentious drink.

Bottle from TJs.

A clear dark brown with a dense, light brown head with good retention. The nose is dominated by nutmeg and cinnamon, with the nutmeg being especially fresh and deep. This is followed by a blend of cocoa, creamy coffee and mild lactose. The palate opens spicy and sweet with a blend of fresh, vibrant nutmeg, mild vanilla, coffee, chocolate and cinnamon. Sweet with mild caramel and coffee on the finish. A hair watery. Solid.

Pours dark chocolate brown with a thin tan head, spotty lacing. Aroma is mild, pumpkin pie spices and just a hint of roasted coffee. Flavor follows the nose, coffee a bit more prominent. Feel is medium bodied, with light carbonation. Overall, a nice beer with the flavors not overwhelming.

12 oz bottle from the Elysian pumpkin mixed 12-pack. Poured into a snifter. Copper color with a creamy head - almost nitro-like (or cappuccino-like?). Aroma and flavor feature pumpkin spice, sweet cream, caramel malt, toffee, and bitter (almost burnt) coffee. Mouthfeel is excellent, very smooth, full, and creamy. Solid overall and if not for the burnt character this would be even better.

From a 12oz bottle marked “EXP BY 06 JAN24” poured into a tulip. Only the appearance is unremarkable here. Dark mahogany but little head and what there is disappears quickly. No lacing. Smell and flavor as advertised, but thankfully the cinnamon is subtle. Abundant pumpkin plus coffee and some vanilla. The lactose additions adds heft to the body. Overall a nice twist on a pumpkin ale but not as good as their Great Pumpkin Imperial Ale

Aroma of harsh espresso and juicy pumpkin bar. Body's much the same. An immediate onset of mocha and espresso followed by thick, sumptuous pumpkin bar pastry with some chocolate on the side. Not bad. Not very complex but smooth and straightforward.

I know this is Elysian and it's a popular brewery that was purchased by Miller so I heard the name of the beer and the description and honestly thought this beer was a joke. Pumpkin coffee stout? Come on! This beer is going to be rank. No one can pull this off. Oh contraire.

Smell is pumpkin but you get undertones of coffee. Like a perfect balance. How is that? Taste is is equally balanced. Nice pumpkin flavoring without being overpowering or tasting fake. A beer like this has to be so hard to nail down and they did it. Standing ovation.
