Enjoyed on tap with dinner at Falling Rock Taphouse in Denver.
A: Extremely dark brown and close to pitch black. One finger tan head resolves into nice rings of lacing.
S: Primarily coffee, with some chocolate and a hoppy licorice, the latter of which could stand to be toned down a bit.
T: Chocolate and coffee up front fades relatively quickly into a bitter licorice flavor with hints of toffee. While it's not quite astringent or unpleasant, the licorice flavor definitely needs to be toned down a bit. This is a beer you should age, not drink fresh, and I wonder if I should blame Falling Rock or myself for being dumb enough to order it.
M: This is where this beer really shines. It starts thick and creamy, foaming on the way down, with resins sticking to the teeth like a much more hop-forward beer. Overall, interesting.
O: A nice hoppy twist on a stout. I just wish this hop fad would calm down a little bit and leave my stouts alone...almost a nice twist, but just a little too much.
Serving type: on-tap
