Thanks Eric for sharing this bomber. It pours black in color with a thin line of clarity around the edges and a thick brown head. A webby wall of lace sticks to the glass as the cap fades.

The aromatics for the most part are muted. What does emit is an overall feel of burnt grain smelling like roasty coffee mixed with a bit of citrus hop component.

The flavor is very roasted as you might expect based off the nose. Almost a borderline unpleasant acrid to ashy flavoring that is burnt and earthy. Not bad but not terribly inviting either.

This is a medium to lighter bodied brew which was unexpected for the proclamation of this being an imperial oatmeal stout. It was modestly carbonated but overall not wowing and lacked the feel associated with the style. The price point on this is set low enough that you should try it but chances are you will feel the same and desire no need to revisit.

Holy black stout! Light will not show through this beer. I bet I could float a quarter on that huge, dense, tan head.

Roasty, sweet and chocolaty, malty with a touch of hops. Smells like a typical milk stout in a lot of ways.

So close to too roasty, but a sweet maltiness swells up to balance the dark grains. Long finish with a late hop bitterness. Not much in the way of flavor hops.

Just how I like a stout: thick and slick. Not a lot of CO2.

An easy drinking stout. The slightly high ABV, keeps its drinkability in the average range.

Overall, a decent stout. Certainly not great, but solid.

(From a hollow-stemmed chalice)

Appearance: Elysian is very close to black: a very dark aubergine. The moderately sized head is of an interesting fuscous tone, and that dissipated gracefully, leaving an immovable cap and light lacing.

Smell: I'm getting oats aplenty here. It's all quite nicely roasted. Hazelnuts are there behind the light coffee and the dark chocolate, and the hops are evident too.

Taste: The start is sweet with caramel and oats. The beer is surprisingly hoppy, and it finishes with a bitter, dry combination of burnt chocolate and aniseed. In the middle are the sweet oats and light coffee, but they seem strangled.

Mouthfeel: The beer feels smooth and even quite rich before the burnt flavours and the aniseed pull the plug on the experience.

Overall: From the appearance and smell, the beer promised a lot. I feel like while the burnt flavours round the beer off, they're a little too harsh and they left me feeling dry and unsatisfied.

Reviewed on 8/15/08. Bottle. Pours black with a pretty dark tan head. Aroma of roasted and sweet malt. Flavor is very sweet, lots of sweet malt along with some bitter chocolate. Smooth palate. This was just ok for me, a little too sweet.

A - Opaque, dark brown, somewhat creamy foam, 1.5" thick, slowly dissipates within a few minutes

S - Bit hoppy, sweet, slightly roasted

T - Layered, cocoa nib, creamy coffee, a bit hoppy bitter on the finish, roasted malt

M - Nice mouthfeel, good carbonation

O - A decent stout, nothing I'd go out of my way for... but good.

I throughly enjoyed this beer, but I wasn't all that satisfied. It is a dark chcolate color with minimal light brown head. Tons of lacing though which makes me want to enjoy this beer. It smelled really malty, and my nose twinged when I got that strong chocolate aroma. Thanks again to Market of Choice for having this beer in stock.

Reviewed from notes:

A: This beer pours thick and dark. Very little light gets through at the edges as I tilt the glass. An impressive beige head sits atop the beer after the pour slowly receding to a thick ring.

S: The smell is typical for a big American stout: Chocolate, molasses and a touch of roast. The Chocolate identified here is more sweet than darkly bitter.

T: The sweetish chocolate is again present in the flavor and dominates the profile a little bit. Not as richly chocolate as I normally like. In the finish I get the touch of roast and bitterness that I don't quite identify as directly espresso qualities but it works. For me the sweetness is a bit too much.

MF: The body of the beer is full and smooth which is very satisfying.

D: The lack of alcohol hotness helps with the drinkability but I find it too sweet to have more than a heathly tasting pour.

Pour: 22oz bottle to wide-mouthed glass. Very dark beer capped by a mocha head. About one finger head quickly dissipates to a thin coat of lace and healthy halo. Looks like there's plenty of carbonation inside the beer. Body looks to be on the thinner side, which is what I'm in the mood for right now.

Nose: Seared figs, roasted malt. Somewhat sweet, caramel... or more like burned sugar. Not exactly an aroma that I'm excited about. Not bad, but just not super exciting... missing the coffee/burnt toast that I want.

Mouth: Thicker than it looks, is the first impression. Healthy roast flavors and lingering burnt toast. Some of that burnt sugar again, an acrid finish. Fore flavors are better than hind flavors. Goes well w/ my burger though. Mouthfeel is thick yet highly carbonated... think the body could stand to be a little thinner (lower in alcohol) but it's quite alright.
