Purchased at Safeway. Dark brown black in color, like oil. Tan head that doesn't last too long. Smells are bitter and coffee like. Taste is quite heavy. Coffee and just a hint of dark chocolate. Lightly sweet but very lightly. Strong warming presence. This beer is a meal. Took me over an hour to get through a 22oz bottle. Enjoyable but I think I'd only have this every once in a while.

22 ounce bottle into snifter, no bottle dating. Pours dense pitch black color with a 1 finger dense mocha head with great retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of big dark chocolate, cocoa, roasted malt, char, coffee, orange zest, pine, grapefruit, floral, oatmeal, and roasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great complexity and balance of dark roasted malt and hop notes. Taste of dark chocolate, cocoa, roasted malt, char, coffee, orange zest, pine, floral, grapefruit, oatmeal, and roasted earthiness. Fair amount of piney citrus bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, roasted malt, char, coffee, citrus zest, pine, floral, oats, and roasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Fantastic robustness and complexity of roasted malt flavors with hops; with a great balance between malts and hop bitterness; with zero cloying flavors present after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a creamy, slick, and lightly sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a highly excellent export stout! Great balance and robustness of dark roast and hop flavors; and very smooth to sip on. A highly enjoyable offering.

Enjoyed this large bottle out of a Belgian tulip glass.

A: Pours a dark black hue with a thick, dark-brown 2-finger head that slowly dissipates down the slide of glass and ends in a solid persistent lace.

S: Malty chocolate and coffee aroma.

T: Dark rich ale with a generous malt sweetness and decent hop bitterness. Strong chocolate and coffee overtones, with a nice malt background. Very malty but balanced by the hops and finishes smooth.

M: Thick body and medium carbonation.

O: Awesome stout. A nice sipping beer @ 7.5 % alcohol by volume

A: The beer is jet black in color. It poured with a half finger high dark tan head that has good retention properties and hardly died down.
S: Moderate aromas of dark roasted malts are present in the nose, along with some hints of pine resin hops.
T: The taste is similar to the smell, except that the flavors of pine resin hops are a little more noticeable and contribute a light amount of bitterness, which lingers through the finish. Some slight hints of alcohol are also present.
M: It feels a little heavier than medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation. There is a slight amount of warming from alcohol.
O: This beer hides its alcohol very well and is rather easy to drink. It's quite hopped compared to other beers in the style so this helps to cut through the malts and improve its drinkability.

My first introduction to this brewery was a random pleasing surprise, in their jasmine IPA, which i loved. I am a big fan, which makes me somewhat biased. This beer is very nice. Starting off you get the "oatmeal" bitterness, not overly strong, but as it softens ( few sips later ) the "barley wine-esque" sweetness ( not overly ) comes out and is subtle and yummo! Very well balanced stout, has a bit of west coast flair and will definitely try again. This is my first review, and though i have tried many great beers, i haven't recorded my impressions at the time. I live in a very wonderful time and place for beer. Cheers!

p.s. i did not truly observe colour and a few other non essential traits, so i this will factor into my rating score. ( colour being the main one, as i was drinking in poor light from a non translucent stein. peace out. )

A: A dark brown color that has a nice fluffy tan head at the top, leaves a slight bit of lacing around the glass as you drink this one.

S: Up front is chocolate and oatmeal, slight booze notes as well, nice hints of brown sugar and nicely roasted malts.

T: Taste right off the bat is chocolate and caramel, some slight hint of dark fruits, at the tail end is some nice roasty malts and some caramel and brown sugar.

M: Smooth brew, medium-heavy bodied, slight bit of carbonation as well.

O: A good brew, nice for the winter months, very tasty and pleasant.

Pitch black with a big brown head. Oatmeal on the nose, chocolate, big roastiness, toffee, coffee, fresh baked hearty grain bread. Touch of smoke.

Medium bodied with a full mouthfeel and moderate carbonation. This beer is almost steak like in flavor with a distinct savoriness in the form of umami. Semi smoky and rich, mouth watering. These savory flavors offset by chocolate, hearty warm bread, and an oatmeal sweetness. All of this is complimented by earthy hops and a prevalent coffee flavor. Good for morning or with a hearty meal.

very hearty with flavor and bitterness that needs respect. Highly recommend for splitting or accompanied by food.
