22oz bottle poured into a pint glass
A: Pitch black with a one-finger mocha colored head
S: Chocolate, coffee, roasted malt, oatmeal, toasted nuts
T: Matches the nose, very complex. Adds a bit of charred meat on the midpalate and hops on the finish
M: Medium-bodied, a nice dried roasted grain feel, balanced
O: Complex, tastes very toasted. I like that the oatmeal comes distinctly through which it doesn't often for the style

Appearance - Pours near black with deep ruby highlights where light can penetrate. Big, 2 finger cocoa colored head with good retention, resulting in as thick layer of suds across the surface. Strong lacing left all around the glass, with phenomenal stick.

Smell - Faint notes of oatmeal and chocolate. Mild roast. Not the most aromatic of oatmeal stouts.

Taste - As in the aroma, the taste is a bit of a letdown after such an amazing pour. Moderate chocolate notes and a light smokiness, followed by even lighter oatmeal and roasted malt character. Finishes with moderate coffee roastiness. Roast comes through a much better as it warms, but still doesn't quite hit the spot.

Mouthfeel - Full-bodied with fair carbonation and a silky smooth delivery. Goes down with velvet softness. Would be the highlight if it didn't look so awesome.

Overall - Darn. Good beer, but a bit too tame for my taste to call it great. I don't know, maybe the Rogue Shakespeare has spoiled my taste and expectations for all other big oatmeal stouts. In any event, glad I got to try it.

Extremely dark pour, almost completely black with just a hint of brown. Far too dark to tell if it's hazy. The head is a light brown color early on before fading to an almost white. Not much retention, thin spotty lace.

Roasted grains, coffee, a splash of licorice. You can almost smell the smooth oatmeal.

Aggressive roasty notes, they grab the taste buds immediately. Very coffee-like flavor throughout. No licorice in the taste.

It is smooth like an oatmeal stout should be. Very creamy, but all the while there is an intense bittering the evolves. Finishes bitter and that bitterness never lets go of the palate. Despite the bitter, there's no presence of hops, all the bitter is from burnt coffee and charred grains. Medium bodied and despite the somewhat high ABV, no alcohol taste or feel.

Overall, I'm happy with this outstanding beer from the Left Coast. I like the dark stuff and while it is bitter, it's fairliy smooth.

A quick, thin, frothy beige head leaves a complete veil of lace on a pint glass as the black beer diminishes with each sip.

Moderate roasted and nutty aromas are joined by moderate herbal hop aromas against a backdrop of charcoal.

The flavors somewhat follow the aroma with moderate bitterness, a decent balance, and a long, malted finish.

This Stout has a full body with woolly texture, fizzy carbonation and a dry finish.

Light conversation with friends, or simply relaxing, this beer is best with a meal.
