From 10/17/13 notes. Had on tap at Ginger Man in NYC, served in a tulip.

a - Pours a hazy golden orange color with one inch of off white head and moderate carbonation evident.

s - Smells of spices, ginger, veggies, light pumkins, yams, and pepper. Not a fan of the nose at all...all spices and ginger to me.

t - Tastes of ginger, light pumkin, bread, spice, pepper, toasted malts, vegetables. Little more pumpkin here and little less spice, better than the nose, though still not great.

m - Medium body and low carbonation.

o - Overall I wasn't a big fan of this one at all. The ginger and spices dominate, and there isn't much else to it. Wouldn't seek it out again.

A - golden, with lovely head. Very good laces.
S- Gingery,malt, hops
T- overpowering ginger, no burn like ginger beer, but a dry, slightly bitter taste due to hops.
M- Ginger, ginger, ginger...light body, not much there
O- Disappointing...wonder if it might be better on a hot day as a thirst quencher, but i wouldn't buy another

Pours a hazy pale yellow with a white head. In the aroma, a small dryness, but not much there. In the taste, A small spice and small dryness, which hides the basic pils tastes. A spice like bite and a watery and lighter bodied mouthfeel, with a small dry spice in the aftertaste. Thin, watery, and a bit strange, not a fan of this one.

I had this on-tap at Max's during Baltimore beer week. Served in a sample glass.

Appearance: The beer pours a cloudy golden color with a layer of white carbonation on top of the pour. The carbonation fades rather quickly.

Smell: This one is quite light and full of ginger. There is also a fruity citrus note that goes pretty well with the ginger.

Taste: The ginger just annihilates everything else in this one. There is a slightly sweet and very light malt flavor. I'm getting some citrus like notes here as well. The finish is bitter and full of ginger.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with very fluffy carbonation and a dry finish.

Overall: I thought it was a bit misleading to call this a pumpkin beer. I would have just called it a ginger beer and left it at that. Not bad, but not as advertised.

First had: on tap at City Tap House, Philly, PA

Review #1800

Served in an Elysian/CTH Pumpkin Smash pumpkin snifter (painstakingly acquired for me by the lovely MsRif). Poured a cloudy copper-orange color with a frothy head that receded to a thick ringlet, then further to a thin ringlet. Aroma of pumpkin, ginger, and pils malts. A bit odd on the palate, a big blast of ginger and something vaguely phenolic up front, biscuity pils malts, a dash of pumpkin, Good & Plenties and melted Gummi Bears. Kind of acrid in the finish. Light-medium body, decent overall, but nothing I'd want to have again. Not bad for a pilsner though.

Served in straight pint glass. Poured a cloudy yellow, nowhere near the clean, bright color you expect from the style. The beer had just a thin cap of white head that had low retention and medium lacing.

The aroma had just enough ginger to provide an interesting tang, the pumpkin wasn't apparent (good for me), and the base malts provided a good foundation. The flavors were pretty similar, good grains, gentle hops, and the spice was just enough to be interesting.

The body was a bit fuller than typical, but was nicely smooth and had just a bit of a lingering taste. Drinkability was pretty good, the lack of pumpkin flavors was a positive for me. Overall, this was a pretty nice little brew, it's certainly worth your time if you see it.

Poured a deep gold with a finger of bright white head. Aroma of ginger, grain, and light grass.

Moderate carbonation and a full, crisp mouthfeel. Lots of nutmeg and ginger up front followed by biscuit, pumpkin, and lingering spice on the finish.

I got mostly nutmeg and squash at first but the ginger really emerged as the beer warmed, to the point of being a little too dominant. Nice overall, though.

Poured from tap at Saraveza Portland during Elysian Pumpkin Festival into spooky little Elysian Halloween snifter.

An interesting beer that I enjoyed but wouldn't really go out of my way to find. Smells of spice and ginger with a hint of German/Czech malts. Not getting much pumpkin on the nose.

On the palate I really taste the fresh ginger (yum!) and a hint of pumpkin. There is some spice, but it's muted. I was hoping for a gingerbread spice kind of thing... but it's really a lot of ginger.

On draft at The Blind Tiger, NYC.

Poured a hazy medium copper hue with a one finger foamy white head. There was decent retention and lacing.

The smell consisted of dry pumpkin spice and a light caramel.

The taste featured a light spice, a grainy malt and a residual spiciness.

The mouthfeel was toward the cleaner side of the style.

Overall a tasty and light pumpkin lager.

A: On tap at the Elysian Tangletown. Poured into pint glass light yellow and gold hues. Some faint hints of pale orange tinting through and sits in the glass crisp and transparent. The head was minimal yet dense and tightly bubbled. Moderate lacing.

S: Nutmeg and spicy aroma that were not overpowering but nicely strewn through the nose. Hints of cinnamon. The aromas were balanced and leaned towards nutmeg, vanilla, and spices.

T: Solid pilsener coupled with roasted ginger. Ghostly buttered with a slight bittered haunting in the finish. Delicate clove and pumpkin-esque backdrop. While not heavy on the brown sugar crust or pure pumpkin pie tastes it was nicely coated with a nutmeg and peppered quality.

M: Light mouth feel and a little slick.

D: This was very unique and very drinkable. Great idea for the Halloween season and hopefully I'll grab a couple more pints of this before its gone for the season.

I had this at the 2007 pumpkin festival at Elysian. This is a pumpkin beer, but I've listed it as a Czech pilsner rather than as a pumpkin ale because it is most decidedly not an ale- and the division between lager and ale seems to take precedence over spicing. The brewery lists it as a ginger pumpkin pilsner. Brewed with pale, Munich, and Cara-hells malts; bittered with US Northern Brewer and finished with Czech Saaz hops. Pumpkin was added to the mash and kettle and chopped fresh ginger was added to te end of the boil. Starting gravity was 15.1 degrees plato. It poured blonde with lots of effervescence and a good head. The smell has a light nuttiness and light ginger aroma. The taste is a weird blend of traditional pilsner crsip flralness and pumpkin with some medicinal bitterness from the ginger on the finish. Not entirely successful. Mouthfeel is slippery and a bit soapy, also missing the mark. It's not like it is a drain pour or anything, but it just didn't really work. Interesting experiment and I applaud them for that, but I don't think I'd have it again- but I'm glad I got to try it once.

poured into a glass, it has a hazy gold color body with a very little head. The smell is ginger. The taste is up front ginger and some spiceyness from the ginger. I wish the pumpkin would come through more. The mouthfeel is smooth and overall if you like ginger, you will like this beer. It is a good pilsner.

If you don't like ginger don't drink this beer. If you do like ginger give it a shot and ignore the ginger haters giving this beer bad reviews. I wish the pumpkin flavor came through a little more strongly but all-in-all it was an enjoyable beer with a strong ginger flavor.

Poured from a bomber into a conic pint glass in high elevation Kalispell, Mont. Reviewed live.

A- One-finger white head that recedes quickly. Hazy goldenrod color.

S- Strong ginger aroma. I hate ginger. Pumpkin flavor is here too. Crisp pils smells sneak in at the end, but they are beaten down by the other aromas. Not a fan.

T- Ginger ginger ginger. I dislike this intensely. Once you get beyond the ginger, the pilsner notes come out.

M- Slightly vinous feel and light body.

O- I really don't like ginger. That kinda ruins the whole beer for me. Sorry Elysian.

From 22 oz bomber to flute glass

One of four selections provided in Elysian's festive 'Pumpkin Patch' gift box.

A: Copper-tan in color, clear, as a gentle pour yields a wispy, 1/2-inch head leaving small patches of lacing around the glass.

S: A huge blast of freshly grated ginger spearheads the nose. Fresh tones of pumpkin and honey-sweet malts are right in tow. Faint notes of earthy hops round the bouquet, but wow, this is one gingery lager.

T/M: As hinted in the nose, the flavors are strongly ginger-forward. Plenty of pumpkin as well, blending nicely with a malty, slightly chewy complexion, which is surprisingly stodgy for the style. The profile is festive, with notes of paprika and nutmeg accenting the pumpkin undertone. Fortunately, the palate remains relatively dry and quenched between sips, which finishes quickly and gingery.

It seems this is under-appreciated. It's flavors and essence steer a wide path from traditional beer flavors, but a slow and ponderous sip will still yield healthy notes of honey-sweet malts and earthy hops. Obviously, if you don't like ginger, forget about it, but if you like an occasional mule or ginger beer, you could do a lot worse.

A: Pours a super hazy medium apricot in color with moderate amounts of carbonation and a faint amount of pale orange highlights. The beer has a two finger tall foamy bright white head that slowly reduce to a thin film covering the entire surface of the beer and a thick ring at the edges of the glass. Significant amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate to strong aromas of ginger over the top of lighter notes of pumpkin and pale + biscuit malts.

T: Upfront there is a very light flavors of pale and biscuit malts. That is quickly overtaken by light flavors of pumpkin and moderate to strong flavors of ginger, lemongrass, and black pepper. Light amounts of bitterness in the finish.

M: Medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation.

O: The ginger is almost overpowering in this brew - I wish it was a little more subtle and the pumpkin was slightly more pronounced. Interesting, enjoyable but not necessarily something I would have with any regularity.

Reviewed from notes.

A- Light golden bodied beer that has a decent amount of haziness poured into a goblet. Small white cap forms with fine bubbles and a foamy texture. Small ring leaves a nice amount of lace webs.

S- Ginger BOMB. Like when you are mashing it up for Asian cooking. Vegetal and light malt hints in the background.

T- Seriously this is stronger than any ginger ale soda I have ever had, it is like eating the ginger to cleanse the palate at a sushi restaurant. Fresh, fresh ginger. Some light pumpkin and hop influence but mostly just ginger.

MF- Creamy body on the light side of things. Ginger spice is massive on the palate and there is a lower end carbonation with a silky feel.

Ginger bomb to the absolute max. I enjoy this flavor but it is very unbalanced and over the top.

A: poured a translucent golden yellow in color with pale yellow highlights and had a half finger of white bubbly head that left a little lacing sticking to the glass.

S: plenty of root ginger upfront in the aroma with toasted grain notes, a little spice, maybe slight hop notes, mild citrus and very muted pumpkin spice as well.

T: the root ginger was also the star player in the flavor alongside toasted sweet malts, very little citrus, pumpkin spice notes, muted piney hops, plenty of grains with a touch of cinnamon and nutmeg.

M: the brew was medium to light in body with a fair amount of carbonation which had a spice, mildly hoppy, potent ginger, grainy, earthy and slight crisp finish.

O: Sorry to say but it was my least favorite out of the pumpkin series and the root ginger character was way too potent for me to enjoy.

Cheers to Goblinmunkey7 for sharing this

Appearance: Mostly clear, slightly hazy golden orange - pours with a white, foamy head - fades to a small, wispy head, leaves some spotty streaks

Smell: Ginger, with more ginger (and ginger) - holy hell, this is liquid ginger - nostril burning - some fleshy pumpkin in the background - light, pale malts underneath, and some grassy pilsner hops - so, it's like a pile of chopped ginger, drizzled with liquid pumpkin, decorated by grass

Taste: Ginger - remarkably potent ginger flavor - spicy - below the ginger, there is some nice, fleshy pumpkin reminiscent of other Elysian beers - grassy Czech Saaz hops - light pilsner malts - overall, multiple kinds of spicy

Mouthfeel: Light, smooth, would be really quaffable if it weren't so spicy

Overall:Hansel And Gretel? More like Ginger and Ginger

Good thing I don't hate ginger, because this is like a liquid ode to gender. It's very interesting, but it really takes like an experiment.

Appearance: Hazy straw/gold. Head is a loose bubbly bright-white and drops to a small loose cap and collar. Some lacing, but nothing lasting.

Smell: So much ginger. Sweet ginger candy clued with fresh ginger root. Some nice layers of spice, nutmeg lingering in the back. Some grassy notes. Pale malt sweetness. Spicy and super floral. Flowers with crystallized ginger coating. Did I mention ginger.

Taste: Pale malts, some minor nutmeg and cinnamon notes. Ginger. Fresh, spicy ginger root. Caramelized ginger candy. Vague pale malt sweetness but it's all about the ginger. It's dominating. Almost peppery levels of spiciness

Mouthfeel: Light with a medium carbonation. Lingering dry spiciness.

Overall: Gingervitis.

Poured into a Dogfish Head pint glass. Pours a slightly hazy light golden amber. One finger white head with decent retention and nice lacing. Aroma dominated by ginger (smells like fresh crystallized ginger) with light grassy hops and sweet malt. Flavor starts as a hoppy pilsner, lightly grassy with sweet malt and spicy hops, finishing pleasantly spicy ginger and hops. Very nice flavor progression and well balanced. Surprisingly strong flavors for a low ABV beer. On the light side of medium bodied. I really enjoyed this, but would have liked a bit more pumpkin flavor. Quite ginger forward, which I liked.
