a deep hazy amber with 2 fingers of sticky foamy head leaving behind excellent amounts of thick lacing.
smells of sweet bready malt, grassy hops, and caramel. the taste is off the hook, very bitter for a red.. hopped up with floral and grassy hops, a very clean barley flavor, and sweet overall backbone. medium body with creamy mouthfeel and moderate carbonation.

a very nice beer overall.. very nicely hopped. well, this makes this my 500th beer this year (that i sat down to review) and although it's not the best beer i've had, it is not a disappointment.

Poured from bottle into a pint glass

Appearance – The beer pours a deep red-amber color with thick billowy head of just off white foam. The head has a fantastic level of retention, very slowly fading to leave a good level of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.

Smell – The aroma of the beer is quite massive of a caramel and toffee smell mixed with some lightly toasted malt aromas. Along with these smells comes some lighter earthy and herbal hop aromas, giving a nice balance to the sweet and overall producing a very inviting aroma.

Taste – The taste begins much drier then would have been anticipated from the nose with a somewhat direr, lightly roasted bready flavor. There is just a hint of caramel sweetness upfront, which ends up fading quite quickly from the tongue, but is replaced by a light fruit flavor of a pear and apple. These fruit flavors are quite light however and are quickly overshadowed by some hop flavors coming to the tongue. Hop flavors of a pine, grass and earth all come at the middle of the taste, and are joined by a light floral hop taste at the very end. With all the hop flavors that come to the tongue, the low lying sweet flavors, and the consistent toasted bready flavor, one is left with a more dank hopped bready flavor to linger on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the thicker and creamier side for a brew of only 5.6 % abv with a carbonation level that is on the lower side. The thicker body and lower carbonation create a rather creamy feel for the brew, really accentuating the dank hoppy flavors.

Overall – A fairly hoppy and drier red with a more dank and musty hop profile. While not super refreshing, it is one that I did enjoy and would be one I would go to from time to time when in the mood for something a little danker hopped and yet still rather more moderate in abv.

On tap at Jim's Home Plate Tavern in Tacoma.

Consistently ruddy pour, well-laced. Smell was inoffensive enough to the point of being non-existent. Same would go for the taste, which had a sour finish. Didn't seem very potent. I'm going to give Elysian the benefit of the doubt and guess that this was from a keg on the verge of going bad.

Poured from the bottle into a nonic glass.

A real interesting body color, nearly deep blood red, but also a little hazy looking too unfortunately. Head makes a nice tan and creamy three fingers, thin bubbles, and slowly settles.

Interesting nose, subdued caramel, with an interesting hint of Irish Ale sticky quality. There's just a hint of super sweet cinnamon or something hanging out in the back. Not sure where this is leading, quite small, but something interesting is hiding.

This has to be one of the most neutral and subdued beers I've had. Small malts, hint of light toast, mostly on the finish but not the mid palate. Light creamy body, almost like an English bitter, and perhaps some fruity esters of strawberry like quality hanging out. Finish has a muted pine softness and clove hinting hot spice that matches nicely, but not particularly noticeable.

Everything seems like it's dialed down a notch except for a solid creamy mouthfeel. It's well made but doesn't really make the flavors noticeable or pop out. I really love a good amber ale, but this brew while having great character just feels dumbed down. Not horrid though at least, quite easy drinking too, but just lacking.
