L: Bright, hazy orange with an off-white head that dissipates very quickly. Leaves almost no lacing.

A: Rich cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, allspice, and some caramel/bisciut malt. Light on the hops notes and very neutral in terms of yeast character. Smells like pumpkin pie with graham cracker crust.

T/M: Modest bitterness upfront, swells into pumpkin pie, graham cracker and slightly herbal and vegetal notes. Mouthfeel is smooth as silk, with a subtle carbonation bite. Superb balance.

Overall, this is hands down the best non-imperial pumpkin ale I have come across. The balance is just about perfect, exceeds everything I thought possible of the style. I always thought of pumpkin beers as a kind of novelty, but this one goes to prove they can be just as delicious as they are festive.

Thanks to Mike aka "garagekegger" for sharing his bomber tonight, very nice pumpkin colored deep somewhat hazy pour with a fluffy white head that left a nice sheet of lace behind as it settled.Very spicey aromas cinnamon and clove really stick out in the aromas more in the lines of apple pie but still appetizing.Seemed a bit thin in the mouthfeel department and a little fizzy but the flavors were nice not overly sweet the cinnamon and clove are there there is a decent pumpkin bite in there but the spice outweighs it.Not a bad pumpkin beer to be had flavorful if not a bit thin.

Appearance – The deep, orangish-brown color of this liquid promises a malty brew. The head was white and moderate but very creamy.

Smell – The malts were thick and heavy here and mixed with some light citrus hops. It all come together nicely to form a classic, pumpkin nose.

Taste – The pumpkin flavor was solid here with a nice spicy hop compliment.

Mouthfeel – This medium-bodied Pumpkin Ale has some light tingly carbonation to the mouthfeel.

Drinkability – This is a good, solid, very malty ale with a bit of PacNW leafy bitterness to boot.

Review from BeerAdvocate magazine Vol. II Issue IX:

Brewed with 150lbs of pumpkin per batch (in the mash, boil and fermentor), green and roasted pumpkin seeds bittered with Horizon and spiced with nutmeg, clove, cinnamon, ginger and allspice.

Slightly hazy tawny color. Lacing surpasses our expectations with a good amount of clinging action. Smells of fermented pumpkin, a little starchy and melon-like, with a tartness that meshes very well with the subtle yet savory spicing. Incredibly smooth, sturdy medium body. Kicks off with a mild tartness of fermented pumpkin. Malt follows right behind with a mellow bread and faint caramel mix. Spicing slowly strolls hand in hand with the balancing hop bitterness. Nutmeg and clove seem to be the more dominant spices in their small world until the ginger comes along and plays king through the aftertaste. A little bready and toasty in the slightly dry finish.

This has to be one of the most complex Pumpkin Ales we've had to date. And there is a bonus in its drinkability, as most of the style are good for on;y one serving. Sip after sip, Night Owl grew on us. Seek this beer. Enjoy.

22 oz bottle. Pours a hazy amber bown with a thin head that quickly goes to a thin collar.

The aroma is bready malts, a touch of fruit and some spices (nutmeg, allspice).

The flavor is vegetal malts with spices. It has a bit of an off metallic finish. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with a little spritzy carbonation, but is mostly watery.

Overall, it sounded and smelled so good - just didn't taste good to me. I like pumpkin beers but this was a bit off (vegetal and metallic).

Pumpkin's are one of my favorite things in this world. They make amazing pies, ravioli and above all else, beers. This smelled like a pumpkin pie, I swear they brewed it with cinnamon! This was very light with pumpkin in the after taste. I enjoyed it, though it may have been to light. This was a nice beer, definitely worthwhile for the low price. But if you do have the money to spend, go for the Dogfish Head Punkin' Ale instead.

Nice dark amber color. Medium light-colored head. Delicate lacing on the glass. Very strong caramel and pumpkin smell. Overall, the presentation is great. However, the taste falls somewhat short. It was very sweet. It almost tasted like a pumpkin cider rather than a beer. If you want a nice beer for dessert, this could be good, but otherwise I'd recommend getting something else.

22 ouncer, pours clear orangy amber, fine white lace all over the glass afte the head slowly cleared out. Nose is purely of a nice pumpkin pie, mostly about the pumpkin and less about the associated spices. More quality brew from the folks at Elysian. Understated in the approach, this pumpkin infused offering does not over do it spice/pumpkin flavor wise. Nice fall seasonal. Moderate sweetness, moderate hops, more pumpkin essence in the finish. Worth a try if you enjoy the style.

Thanks to 5000 for sending me this bottle. Reviewed from notes.

The beer pours a hazy orange color with a white head. The aroma has a lot of pumpkin and some cinnamon, as well as a light amount of tartness. The flavor is similar, only there is not tartness. I get some pumpkin as well as some nutmeg and allspice. Thin mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

I have been drinking Night Owl since 2010 and have sought it out as one of my favorite pumpkin ales. This was my review from last year: dark orange cloudy amber color, strong and pleasant aroma of pumpkin with spices. Tastes like roasted pumpkin with all of the pumpkin pie spices, but not overwhelming. A very mellow hop finish and the roasted pumpkin lingers on. A complex yet balanced and rich pumpkin ale. I even kept a couple of bottles of the 2012 vintage in my fridge for comparison. Kept in the cold, they were every bit as good as last year.

This year (2013) was a big disappointment. Substantially less sediment than previous years and the taste is not as rich or sweet. The aroma is similar, but overall it is at best a bland pumpkin beer with an unfortunate bitter finish. Every year for the past three years I have had friends visit to try the Elysian Night Owl. They cleaned me out of 2 cases in past years but this year one bottle and they were ready to try something else. Good thing I tried a six pack before committing to a case. One thing I have learned since I began drinking pumpkin ales over 10 years ago, since they are a craft brew they vary substantially from year to year. Best to sample a couple bottles before choosing one to buy in quantity. It looks like Harpoon UFO is a winner this year.
