On draft at Falling Rock on 9/28/11.

Of the 9-10 Elysian pumpkin beers we ordered at this event this was our second favorite. Both unique and delicious.

Brewed as a Mexican themed beer, this is spiced with: cinnamon, cumin, black pepper, roasted guajillo chilies and two kinds of cayenne pepper. Roasted pumpkin seeds in the mash, pumpkin in all stages of the brew. Epazote is added during conditioning.

The aroma is really complex. The black pepper and chilies really take center stage. There's some chocolate flavor as well as a nice smoked chile aroma. Robust and spicy with detectable pepper heat.

Tastes hot (spicy) and smokey. Leaves a slight burn on the tongue. Finishes with mild notes of nutmeg and chocolate.

I can easily see where this beer would be too much for the average drinker to tolerate, but I found it to be a sensational masterpiece.

Poured into Pint glass.

A- Very dark. Elysian is brewing all sorts of Pumpkin Ales this season so it can't be compared to your average cinnamon and nutmeg pumpkin pie brew. The color is almost like a porter. Very little head.

S- Smells like vagina! I kid you not. The server called it "Couche de Medianoche" (it was even written this way on the taps chalkboard). I don't know whether or not I'm okay with this, but smell gets a 4 just because that is so unique.

T- The first thing that hits is that same eating-out flavor. This is replaced by some spices and caramel. Great spicy finish. A habanero throat burn lingers for quite some time. Mexican pumpkin ale!

M- Not too carbonated, malty but not super thick. Pleasant drinking experience - the spicy aftertaste readies the mouth for another sip.

O- Unique beer. Try this if you see it (it won't be around much longer). Like nothing I have tasted before, so it's difficult to compare with other Pumpkin Ales. Probably won't have it again, at least until next pumpkin season, but I don't regret the experience.

Served in 14oz goblet. Poured a barely translucent dark brown with just a very thin ring of off-white head that had some retention and no lacing.

The aroma started out with some nice, earthy malts and a bit of sweetness. There was also a light yeast-spice scent. On the tongue the beer started out pretty similar, but quickly went downhill. The flavors were smooth up front but fell into harshness at the back. While the amount of pepper/chili was soft at first, it grew throughout the glass until it was the dominant aspect and there was another odd aspect that exacerbated those pepper notes.

The body was solidly medium. Drinkability was hard due to the harshness of the flavors and the burn of the chili. Overall, I liked this beer a lot less than the number score will show. Another example of why doing something just because you can, doesn't mean you should.

On tap at The Blue Tusk. Very interesting pumpkin beer, well blended with the spicy chile, and the tumeric, cloves, cinammon, and coco in the finish. Great drinkability if you can take the spice. Lacey and orange bodied. Surprisngly little aroma.Above avrage carbonation.
