Thanks to 5000 for sending me this bottle.

The beer pours a yellow color with a white head. The aroma is full of rosemary and agave - unsurprisingly - with some biscuit malt thrown in. The flavor is similar. The rosemary notes really come through strongly in the flavor, but they are jointed by some biscuit and other assorted herbal notes. Low bitterness. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Appearance: (4.0)

- Pours a lightly cloudy light copper and straw yellow brew. Minimal head, but a thing fluffy and thick lace-making head. Leaves a light layer over the brew. Looks like a solid west coast IPA to me.

Smell: (4.5)

- First favorite thing about the aroma, is the northwest piney hops. Spicy piney and fresh hops galore. There is a light zesty fruity touch just barely sitting in the background. Must be a light biscuity malt, because not much grain comes through but for a mild sweetness. So far, a really good aroma.

Taste: (4.0)

- Ok, this puppy is a great tasting IPA. The piney zesty herbal and grassy bitter hops are quite nice to balance the sugary sweet bready grain and agave fruitiness. Great balance, and yet still rather hop-forward. This IPA might even be better minus the rosemary and agave even.

Mouth Feel: (4.0)

- This is one nice chewy IPA. Well carbonated without being too bubbly like some. Quite drinkable, and super drying from the hop bitterness. This stuff goes down easy, one to keep a close eye on. Little sticky and cloying. Overall nice.

Overall: (4.0)

- Solid bitter hoppy flavorful and drinkable brew with a subtle unique herbal and fruity touch that isn't bad, it just leaves me wondering what this brew might be like without the alternative ingredients. Either way, it is very solid. I like bitter-dry. If you do too, you will dig this brew.

#5 in the 12 beers of the Apocalypse series.

22 picked up tonight at the COOP for about $6.50... poured into my small tulip ... nice white foamy head dies pretty quickly... the brew is a hazed golden orange.

Nose is lemony and shows plenty of pale malt and hops.... Not really getting much in the way of rosemary.

Bitter and sorta abrasive... again, not much rosemary. Finishes pretty dry with a lingering hoppy bitterness.

Tons of carbonation lightens the body.

Meh.... Okay.... nothing to write home about.

Poured into a Seattle Beer Week pint glass. Pours a cloudy medium orange amber with a half finger white head with good retention and lacing. Aroma is sweet malt and an sweet herbal aroma that must be the agave and rosemary. As it warms the rosemary component becomes more dominant. Interesting flavor with a good meld of sweet agave syrup and malt with the rosemary and hops spicing things up in the middle. Finish is sweet and spicy without being cloying. The rosemary is not distinguishable as a flavor, but the earthy pungent components of the herb are evident here. Medium bodied with a nice mouth feel. I can see where this might be challenging, but the flavor combination worked well for me. I have really enjoyed the unusual flavor combinations of the first five Apocalypse beers and felt that they all pushed the envelope but remained enjoyable to drink. I hope that this one stays in rotation.

I had this on-tap at Max's. Served in a tasting glass.

Appearance: Pours a cloudy amber color with a yellow hue. There is a half finger of fluffy off white head that leaves a layer on top of the pour.

Smell: The hops are there with a strong floral note. I'm also picking up some tropical fruit that reminds me of papaya.

Taste: More malty than the smell indicated. I'm getting some bready yeast notes. The bitter hops build toward the end with some fruity floral notes. I'm not sure that I'm picking up the rosemary. The finish is bitter from the hops.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with tingly carbonation and a dry finish.

Overall: Lots going on here, but I'm not sure it all worked for me. It was an interesting beer, but I don't think I need any more.

Poured into a pint glass.

3.0 A: Well hazed yellow orange color. Two fingers of frothy off-white head. Retention is below average and a sparse few clumps of lacing are left.

2.5 S: Both the rosemary and the agave are quite apparent. The rest of the IPA isn't. The remainder smells wheaty and yeasty. Maybe some herbal hoppiness, but that might just be the rosemary. Still, it's not bad.

3.0 T: Again, lots of rosemary and the agave is apparent. The taste offers a lot more than the nose. Mix of citrusy, herbal, and earthy hoppiness. The rosemary works well with the hops. There's some yeasty breadiness, but it works well with the rest of the beer. Not a ton of malt component though.

3.5 M: Medium body. Good moderate carbonation. Lacking the creaminss I like in an IPA, but not bad overall here.

3.0 D: Pretty mediocre beer. It's not bad, but nothing I'd like to have again.

Bottle opened on 8.14.12.
Number 5 in the series.

A - Very cloudy, lighter orange with a two inch fluffy white head that fades slowly.

S - Sweet citrus, lemons, honey.

T - Lemons, with a bitter grass finish, lost in sweetness.

D - Good carbonation, light to medium body.

O - Citrusy and bitter. A touch dull overall.

Rosemary Agave IPA (w/lemon peel)

Pours a light golden ale with etched white surface foam. Hazy. Smells of agave syrup, grain and some hints of lemon and rosemary. Getting herbed/spice beer, not IPA. Grain, bitter and lemon rind with some alfalfa. Not impressed. Medium on full bodied for the style and moderate carb. Dry finish. Not a winner for me.

Poured from 22oz bomber into a pint glass. This is the 5th in Elysian's Beers of the Apocalypse series.

Appearance: hazy orange hue with a robust effervescence. and two fingers of frothy ivory head. Looks like a good IPA.

Smell: aroma is earthy, herby and slightly soapy. There's also a dry biscuity element which pairs with the rosemary herbiness which gives me the weird impression of sagebrush; not precisely my favorite impression from a beer. Still, it's not too bad.

Taste: nice maltiness; a bit on the sweet side. There's also a light fruitiness here, which may be due to the agave or perhaps a good Citra or Amarillo-type hopping. The rosemary is unobtrusive and adds a mild but interesting herby quality. Bitterness is moderate at the end, but is somewhat accentuated by the rosemary. I actually rather like this beer!

Mouthfeel: medium body with a good level of carbonation and a nice, smooth creaminess. Good stuff.

Overall: I was not expecting to like this beer very much, and I am quite pleasantly surprised. It works quite well for my palate.

Pours a hazy amber orange, slight white lacing for a head.

Smells of honey, orange citrus, and mild grapefruit hops.

Tastes upfront of fruity hops and some honey sweetness, followed by agave and herbal notes.

Medium to full body with tingly carbonation on the roof of the mouth.

I'm really getting into agave in beer and this is a pretty good example of it being used well. It balances the hops well without being too sweet. The beer manages to feel clean and refreshing while also keeping some heft to it. Quite good and would certainly have it again.
