Oh Hell Yeah! This is the type of IPA today's HopHead wants to dig into. Fresh and bursting with hoppy goodness. The ABV of 7.2% is the absolute magic number for a classic American IPA.....kudos Elysian for getting it right. *Great label art as well!

Pour is a little more pale than I would prefer, but still rich and opaque enough not to let me worry. Two fingers of pillowy white head dissipates to about a finger leaving flower pressings along the side of the glass promising greater things.

As soon as I pop the top it's big juicy sweet citrus. Tangerine, orange, grapefruit, some jkucy cantaloupe and other tropical fruits... really enticing. Some earthen and... dark toast? malts lurking as we dig deeper?

After the promise of the nose, perhaps I got my hops too high. That's not to say it's not very good, but I was looking for something just popping with sweet tropical citrus' bursting in my mouth, but instead the taste steps more towards the cool earthtones of blunt pine and pith. Less sticky sap, more flat needles.
Body is solid, malt doesn't provide any distinct flavour profile of its own, but supports the grey bitter of the hops appropriately. Moderate carbonation feels appropriate and puts the pithy stark bitterness to the forefront by the end of the swallow. That pithiness blankets the tongue in the aftertaste, and the alcohol is hidden quite well.
I vacillated on this one a fair amount. After an overwhelmingly positive approach, it settles in to an above average but not as outstanding as I had hoped/expected middle, and upon reflection retains more of the former than the latter. Like a steady relationship, starts with a bang, settles into a routine that can seem monotonous and retread at times, but ultimately looked back upon fondly, appreciating the positive bent of that routine while remembering the highs and dismissing any lows.
Don't love it as much as I was expecting to, but would absolutely reach for it again, and wouldn't hesitate if a visiting out of town friend said they heard it was good and wanted to try it as an example of really good Seattle beer. Whatever, it makes sense in my head.

Poured from the bottle into a Spiegelau IPA glass.

Deep classic crystal clear pale amber. Light hues of lemon and bronze orange color, with fine white and pinhead hollow carbonation rising from the bottom. Head formation is a little smaller than most for the style, reaching three fingers tall with off white color, and a small retention thick cap of about a finger tall. Still a very decent looker regardless..

Aroma hints towards slight florals and a bit of pine. Some tropical hop mushy qualities, but a bit of pine seems to sneak in over it. Juiced body it seems is coming from this aroma, and a much simple toned down caramel malt sweetness which is nice. Pretty inviting and solid.

Palate comes in surprisingly. Much sweeter on first sip as some caramel and alcohol like hot sweetness more like a sugar DIPA seems to be coming. However, it quickly disappears and the hops begin talking throughout the palate. Mid palate hits with a good minty and powder pine sense, and a tropical note of mango and orange comes in. Good quick finish with a long lasting pine and spruce flavor. Some warm earthy tones mix with a big of tropical and seem to bounce off each other, playfully, if not integrating co-operatively. It's a fun fight as tropic vs pine/earth fight for supremacy and the run continues. Juiced hinted body seems to take a backseat to a simple malted backbone, that almost gets a bit watery. Flavors still manage to coat everywhere.

Overall it's a fun beer, and the hop angle is intersting if perhaps not really showcasing Citra and Amarillo at it's ideal. Still the ride and bounce is pretty darn fun.
