Great looking head though the chunks swirl into the glass, orangey minty nose with some biscuity backing. Easy on the palate, just enough bitterness. Rind more than juice. Yeast and toasted malt in the finish. Fun to try.

Pours a hazy orange with less than one finger head. Head retention is bit that great with minimal lacing. The nose is of orange and malty sweetness. The taste behind with orange sweetness and mild carbonation but quickly finishes with mild hops and minimal bitterness and subtle blood orange in the finish. Actually a nice end to the drink.

12oz. bottle poured into a tulip glass

A- a cloudy light orange with a thin off white head, decent lacing.

S- Ruby Grapefruit with a crackery malt base. Hint of pine.

T- A flash of orange sweetness is whacked solidly by grapefruit bitterness. Juicy. Very light malt base. Refreshingly short finish. Some bitterness lingers a touch.

M- lighter side of medium, plenty of carbonation.

O- Great twist on a pale. Very nice on a hot summer day.

(3.7) A: Candy orange glaze with a rapid, feverish carbonation factor. Thin, milky chalky white head is moderately retaining with a thick, milky band for lace. Lasting coverage.

(3.65) S: Fresh grapefruit juice, citrus and dry pine. Grassy notes on the close with a nice level of appeal.

(3.65) T: Flavor was dry citrus hopping, pine, and grapefruit. Flowery, nice level of ibu's, especially for a pale, perhaps intruding in ipa territory. Big grassy hop finish.

(3.75) M: Mouthful was crisp, creamy and very smooth texture wise, lightly dry.

(3.65) O: Overall very good level of hopping, creamy maltiness, nice drinkability leaving with a lingering grassy fade

Elysian Superfuzz Blood Orange Pale
12 oz. brown bottle
$1.99 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ

Upon taking my first sip I thought "why do you need Blood orange with all of these citrusy hops?"... and then as if on cue, the note of blood orange cut right through and it was clear to me - the blood orange is bright and sharp and juicy, and definitely makes for a distinctive beer! Besides, it actually works with the citrusy hops in a complementary way... the blood orange accentuates the citrusy hops, and the citrusy hops accentuate the blood orange. WIN, WIN.

Appearance: A rough pour brings up a solid three fingered head of creamy off-white foam atop a cloudy deep orange and brass colored body. The head slowly settles into a densely creamy cap about an inch thick (25.4 mm). With each sip broken rings of craggy lace are left about the glass; and although the head does eventually drop it maintains almost a completely solid surface covering.

Smell: Citrusy hops. Some orange is distinct. A touch of hoppy pungency, and even less base malt.

Taste: Bright and bold citrus hops appear upfront, immediately followed by rising notes of blood orange that envelope the mouth. It's juicy and refreshing! The fruit fades quickly at the swallow, and the bitterness steps in, but it's fairly tame, and not a lot of the citrusy hop dryness sticks around. Remarkably drinkable!

Mouthfeel: Medium-light body with a bristling yet somehow soft carbonation.

Overall: Impressive. It's perhaps a bit two-sided (Blood Orange & citrusy hops), but at the same time it has a remarkably refreshing characteristic. It's kind of bombastic with all of the citrus, yet it remains bright, juicy, and drinkable - and at just 5.4% abv it could make a great American session ale. So, in conclusion, it offers a unique character on the level of a bold IPA while still remaining a pale ale at heart. Absolutely worth seeking out, even if to try it just once to understand its uniqueness.

Purchased in Tennessee on my recent (month ago) trip south,. We do not get Elysian anything in Mass. and they have a good rep. No bottling date info seen.

"Brewed with Blood Orange." Great Seventies label art, reminiscent of rock music posters of the era.

Poured from the 12 oz. bottle into a Unibroue stemmed English tulip.

a; Hazy orange with a finger thick white head which reeceded to even surface foam and spotty lacing.

s: Mild fruit cup.

t; Slightly orange up front with light hop balance. Mildly bitter finish.

m: Medium, good body, lots of carbonation tingle.

o: A pleasant summer ale, not as orangy flavored or as reddish as anticipated but good nonetheless.
