Pours gold with a fading head.
Nose shows some mix of cardamon, cumin, nutmeg, cloves or star anise along with a hint of baked pears. Not sure about the savoury cumin-like character.
More cardamon as a flavour along with a harsh, herbal astringency. Very little supporting malt and the aggressive bitterness clashes with the spices.
Carbonation is too high.

Second entry in the Oddland series. Pours a slightly cloudy golden amber with tiny particulates much like pear juice. One finger white head with great retention and lacing. The aroma of fresh pears and spices was noticeable at arms length while pouring, inviting. Aroma in the glass is more spicy, with cardamom, hot peppers and saison style yeast. Flavor quite floral, with mild pear juice and dry saison style yeast. Finishes with an unusual dry, Asian hot spice bitterness, almost like allspice. Light to medium bodied with nice carbonation. An Oddlands ale indeed. Slightly unbalanced with the spicing kind of taking over at the end, but still enjoyable and unusual flavor progression. Finish is dry and sharp like a Biere Brut, but spicier. The finish has some curry elements. I would have liked to have tasted the bright pear juice as dominant in the flavor as the aroma, but this was still enjoyable. I tend to like Elysian's experiments in skating to the edge of flavor, and this one is in that category.

Loved the peppercorn saison in the oddland series. This pear ale with cumin and cardamom is another surprising and fun beer. The nose and taste are both intense with the spices. There isn't much sweetness as I would have expected with the advertisement of pear but this is probably for the best, given the cumin. The color is bright orange with lots of sediment. Would probably pair great with a steak or lamb for dinner.

Poured into a tulip glass. Pours a slightly hazy sunset golden color. Quickly dissipating thin white head. Lacing is evident. Beautiful to look at.

Spiced fruit smell. Pear and cardamon are evident on pouring with the cumin smell becoming more evident with time and the peariness disappearing quickly.

Interesting spicy flavors, definitely a unique brew. Malt to bitterness is well balance, little to no hop flavor. Spices dominate but are not overbearing.

Mouth feel is clean, toward the dry side, yet giving enough backbone for the spice aroma to ride to the back of the mouth and down the esophagus. Carbonation is present but minimal. Slight bite on the front of the tongue with a lingering spice presence on the tongue.

Elysian goes out on a limb again. Certainly not a beer you’d want to drink all the time, but this is a limited release, so you’d be lucky to try it at all, really. This beer would pair well with lamb and soft cheeses. Reading the label I had fantasies of more pear (and perhaps less cumin). Definitely worth trying while it’s available. Would love to see someone do something similar with more emphasis on the pear (perhaps blending a similar beer with a bit of perry to bring out more of the pear?) Extra points to Elysian for having Jim Woodring do labels too! I’d love to have that on a t-shirt (note the pears on the tree’s are gold leaf!)
