On tap the Pump House late one night playing pool there with relatives. A caramel brown beer with a smallish bone-white head in the pint glass. The aroma has hints of smokiness, but mostly of the malts which add dryish brown sugar or charcoal. Smoky, yes, but where is the sweet-rich candied aroma of a wee heavy? Missing. Taste is full on smokiness with caramel malting and a little fruitiness. Good, but not a wee heavy. A solid mouthfeel, although a little less full-bodied than you might expect. Drinkable, but the complexity is missing.

A: beautiful dark brown with red highlights, visible carbonation when held to light, one finger of lingering foamy tan head.
S: I'm struggling to pick up much. Very light notes of roasted malt. I'm not really smelling the caramelization I would expect of a Scotch ale. The malt doesn't seem roasted enough for the style.
T: It's not as awful as I'd feared from the smell, but this doesn't taste like a Scotch ale should. It has far less flavour than it should, there's no taste of caramel, no chocolate flavours, and the flavour I am picking up is less than pleasant.
F: Smooth, I guess.
O: Avoid!

341ml bottle poured into pint glass 19/10/11

A clear brownish amber with a short lived light tan thumbs width of foam that leaves zero lace

S rye bread, honey and iced tea no where near a scotch ale

T if you passed me this with a couple ice cubes in it I wouldn't doubt for a second that it was a glass of iced tea. tastes old and oxidized just not quite right

M full for the color but could use a little more bubbles

O not what I'm looking for in a Scotch Ale just didn't do it for me

I've had 3 Pump House brews in the last few days and 2 of them haven't been quite right. I had the IPA on tap in Halifax and it was great and the SOB in bottle before and I remember it being pretty good. I hope this a isolated incident and the breweries as good as I remember

341mL, no date.

Pours a dark, clear garnet. Nice color, but the lackluster head does not impress.

The aroma is wonderfully smokey and peaty, with some dark malts in there too.

Flavor is also smokey, though mainly darkly malty with a distinctly black tea flavor (odd). Some really light dark fruit and raisin. Bitterness is low, overall body is light. The carbonation is fine, but the mouthfeel is a bit too watery for such a flavorful brew.

Great aroma and interesting flavor. Not perfect but decent.

Appearance: 1 inch head, dark brown in color

Smell: toasted malt and light peat

Taste: earth, toffee, peat, chocolate, and big time smoke—starting in the middle but finishing way strong

Mouthfeel: medium bodied, moderately, moderate carbonation

Overall: This may be one of my favorite Scotch ales. I love all the complex flavors coming from such a low abv brew. The smokiness here is borderline rauch level. This may be my favorite Pumphouse brew and that says something. Sessionable and this would always be in my fridge if it were here.

A - murky amber brown, finger of tan head settled at a thin covering with respectable lacing
S - sweet and smoky peat dominate, light creamy chocolate and toffee hints
T - extremely smoky nose with strong tobacco to the point of coughing, some coffee and burnt sugars, flavourful but more smoke than scotch character
M - medium body to start, relatively smooth with a smoky bitterness lingering
O - it is unique for sure in terms of the tobacco smoky flavour, more of a novelty than a true scotch ale in my opinion, but still tasty enough to be worth a try

A - Pours a dark amber colour with a brown hue, finger of beige head with some retention and no real lacing.

S - Strong wooden peaty scent off the top, sweet caramel and toffee also coming through. Touch of espresso and chocolate also coming through with vanilla on the finish.

T - The wooden peat hits you off the top, followed by bitter espresso and some toffee on the finish. The sweetness detectable on the nose is replaced by bitter notes. The finish is smokey, though a touch unpleasant and reminiscent of the flavour left on the tongue after smoking a cigar.

M - Medium bodied ale that goes down a tad prickly but finishes nicely with a touch of dryness.

O - Overall, a tasty scotch ale. The after-taste was a bit of a turnoff, but a worthy sample of the style nonetheless. Had it been a bit sweeter, I think it would've fared much better.

A: Dark copper/red body with a few mm of white head. No retention and lacing is minimal.

S: Huge notes of smoke, notably firewood, mixed with some carmamel and hops.

T: Sweet malts up front with a lot of smoke. Finishes with a good dose of earthy hops.

M: Light bodied with medium-high carbonation. I find that the carbonation is to much and the after taste is overpowering.

O: I don't find this well for its style, but I do think it's worth a drink in the least.

Dark amber brown apperance with thick, bubbly head that sticks around for awhile. Sweet, caramel smell with a hint of malt. Kind of smokey.

Taste is also mostly sweet (brown sugar) and caramel with a hint of malt. Very smokey, almost excessively. Has a hint of grain. Light-medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Has a lingering sweet and smokey aftertaste.

Overall, meh. Seems like it could of been good but a little unbalanced. Aftertaste seems to get more and more smoky. Okay of your into scotch ales, but there's better selections from Pumphouse.

12 oz bottle, can't remember who shared this one.

Pours a clear dark amber/orange, thin off white head forms and settles to a thin ring around the glass, a few lace spots stick, looks alright.

Smell is nice, malty, some caramel, a bit of brown sugar, nice peaty/smokey maltiness, bit of biscuit, light wafer, a touch of fruit and some earth.

Taste is similar, caramel up front, a bit of biscuit and lightly bready, smoke/peat, a touch of floral and light fruit, solid bitterness in the finish.

Mouthfeel is light to medium bodied with low carbonation. A nice scotch ale, the peat character is nice.

341ml bottle. No information on the label as to the particular Scottish nature herein.

This beer pours a clear, quite dark red brick amber hue, with one finger of foamy, somewhat creamy pale beige head, which leaves little beyond a low ring of lace around the glass as it quickly recedes.

It smells of more than mildly peaty caramel malt, with a touch of iodine, and some soft chocolate-enveloped toffee. The taste is still pretty Islay-friendly, with the smoked caramel malt, brine, tame medicinal notes, understated cocoa powder, and besieged earthy, floral hops.

The carbonation is rather on the low side, the body a wavering medium weight, mostly smooth, and just a tad creamy. It finishes off-dry, with some still surprisingly peaty maltiness.

A nice island Scotch ale, the underappreciated malt kind of having to cede the limelight here, and the low ABV makes this a strong candidate for going out on the lash...and lasting more than a few rounds.

Pours a clear, dark brown, with a tan head.

Smells are faint, slight phenolic smoky character

Taste is amazing! I've never tried a peated beer before, and I'd heard they were terrible. And I've not much cared for the rauchbiers I've had before, either. But this - it's excellent! Tastes faintly of scotch - that same, earthy, grassy, peaty smoke flavour. No roastiness, and not much noticeable caramel either, but that yummy peatiness, and perhaps a trace of chocolate. There's enough IBU's to balance and let you know you're drinking beer, but they're purely supportive and not at all in the forefront.

Mouthfeel is medium full

Nice taste, good body, finishes relatively clean - I'd have a few of these, for sure!

Extra courtesy of Moniker. Thanks man!

Brown pour with strong and deep ruby tones when held up to a light. A tan head has good retention and leaves a few spots of sticky lace. Strong smoky, peat malt aroma. Nice subtle smoke throughout the whole experience. Peat is the next prominent flavour, but there are great notes of cocoa, fruit and caramel lurking underneath it. Its quite mellow and sessionable, and I could drink these all night. Medium-light body with medium carbonation seems about right for the ABV.

This is a very solid sessionable scotch ale.
