I tried this on tap at Oktoberfest Zinzinnati. Wow, this beer is really fantastic. A medium brown color with an off-white head. Aroma was citrusy, sweet, and a touch of roasty. Just as the name implies, it combines a true German style hefeweizen with Oktoberfest beer and was the highlight of the beers at the festival I was at. On one hand, you have the estery flavors from the hefeweizen, and on the other hand you have some of the malty and roasted flavors from the Oktoberfest beer. Combine those together and you have a winner. Somewhat light and thin mouthfeel made it perfect for the 80 degree day outside. I could have drank a lot more of this one.

500 mL bottle from the LCBO; best before Jun 2024 and served slightly chilled. Poured into a pilsner glass.

Pours a foggy, effervescent golden-yellow colour, kicking up two fingers of soapy, frothy white head that lasts for a little over three minutes. Its remnants include a wide, frothy collar and filmy cap, with a modest ring of wavy lace adhering to the glass - looks good to me. Mildly sweet aroma; wheat bread, honeyed biscuit and a hint of apple flesh, with notes of floral hops and graininess.

A tasty festbier hybrid - grainy & wheaty, with flavours of bready malts, honeyed biscuit and hints of orchard fruit. Bready, malty back end with some caramel-like sweetness dissipating into the aftertaste; not much in the way of hop or yeast character, to be honest. Medium-full in body, with aggressive carbonation that prickles the palate with each sip, adding some frothiness to this brew's lively mouthfeel. Fair drinkability, but the near-6% becomes noticeable as the glass warms.

Final Grade: 3.8, a respectable B+. Erdinger's Oktoberfest Weissbier is an average German wheat beer, but I must admit that it becomes a little more interesting if examined under the "festbier" lens. Practically all of what I'd expect from a proper festbier is present and accounted for - the problem is that it has been diffused into a less-than-exceptional hefeweizen. Basically, this is a 'jack of all trades' sort of deal, and that's a tough sell for this beer geek - I'd really rather just have one or the other. Still better than their flagship hefe; I'll revisit this at some point, & it's worth trying at least once.

330ml bottle pours a slightly cloudy golden yellow color with a ridiculously large, dense head of off-white foam that fades down to a thick layer while leaving substantial lacing. Smells of bready malts and noble hops. Hearty bready malt flavor with a distinctive wheat beer flavor and a bit of yeast funkiness but not much of the fruitier flavors you'd find in a hefeweizen. Mild bitterness and some floral-spicy noble hops flavor. Slight sweetness, medium body, an earthy-funky wheat beer aftertaste, and a pretty bubbly carbonation mouthfeel.

This was a really unique beer. I actually thought this was a Märzen when I pulled it off the shelf, since I don't usually like Festbiers. This ended up being a really interesting cross between a hefeweizen and a festbier that was pretty tasty. Might consider buying again.

Poured a 500ml bottle into a nonic. A two finger white head on a hazy light apricot. Good head retention. Good lacing.
Mild malt smells.
Fruit up front. Light, clean. Grainy finish. No hop evident.
Light body and moderate carbonation.
An unusual but very nice Festbier. Not my favourite style but I could definitely session this beer.

330 ml bottle poured into a Willi Becher.
Best by: 4/24

Subdued clean spicy aroma escapes as it pours gold and mostly clear with a slight haze. The stark white head is large and rocky and leaves clumps of lace as it slowly recedes. Taste is good though non-traditional, some bubblegum yeast with light hints of banana, light wheat and grainy malt along with spicy hops. Spent bubblegum aftertaste. Medium-weight frothy body has light crisp edges.
Decent enough beer, refreshing and easy to drink but not generally what I want in a Festbier

Poured from a freshness dated 11.2 oz. bottle: slightly hazy golden hue with a tremendous, fluffy white head that seemed to last forever.

It is almost devoid of any aromas save a slight hint of fruit.

Of course, this is not an Oktoberfestbier in the traditional sense but a very flavorful, higher-alcohol wheat beer It has all the marks of a good hefeweizen including a zesty mouthfeel, faint cloves, but this one also has a little more body than usual for the style; perhaps, that is why it is an Oktoberfest. In any event, it is excellent for a warm, early November day in Florida.

Review from notes. LCBO purchase for $3.75 CDN. Served cold into a pint glass.

Appearance - Clear rich yellowy brew with some reddish highlights. Nice two finger head that sticks around for a while. Not much lacing to speak of.

Smell - Fair amount of bready, some grain sweetness backing it up. A hint of fall leaves / vegetative aroma.

Taste - Clean and again quite bready with middling bitterness and some sweet bready sweetness at the close. Traces of caramel as well.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied, easy to drink. Modest carbonation.

Overall - A rather solid Festbier, not Germany's best, but certainly comparable with most. Pretty on brand for Erdinger.

500ml bottle poured into tulip.

Pours a hazy gold with one finger of white head that leaves a ring of splotchy lace as it recedes.

Smells of brown crusty bread, crispy grain, apples sliced up for a pie, spicy yeast and grassy green hops.

Tastes of more bready caramel malt, grainy biscuits, green caramel apples, spiced honey and more verdant hop goodness.

Feels soft and fluffy. Medium bodied with frothy carbonation. Finishes mildly chewy.

Verdict: Highly recommended. Good flavor, goes down pleasantly and makes you resent the cooling weather a little less.

I LOVE octoberfest beers, every year I look forward to "going shopping" and grabbing a few new brews to try. This trip I grabbed a real German brew, Erdinger Octoberfest in a 16oz (500ml) can. Chilled to 48 degrees and poured into a glass. The beer has a very crisp taste to it, I almost want to say a little hoppy for my liking. As a guy who likes darker fuller beers this one falls a bit short for me. It's not bad, just middle of the road. Hazy golden with an average white head. It's good and enjoyable just lacks the "Wow, that's good" factor.
