2012 review:

Bottle from Friar Tuck's in Savoy, IL
Best by 05.2011 on bottle
Poured into a Weihenstephaner weizen glass

An interesting weizenbock that displays a strongly syrupy, malty, Belgian dubbel or quad influence in place of typical German banana or spice components.

Pour produces a tall, tan head that collapses, in a few minutes, to a thin ring around the glass with three small islands of foam. No lacing. Body is a dark brown red out of light, a mostly transparent amber color with orange highlights when held up to the light. Carbonation is strong and quite visible. Generally average looking.

Aromas predominantly of toasted bread crusts, caramel malt, slight solvent-like alcohol, molasses (especially as it warms), dried prunes, and mild spiciness. No emphasis on banana or banana-like esters. As another reviewer noted, this is like the aromas of a Belgian quadrupel than a German weizenbock.

Opens with toasted wheat and barley malt flavors, which are akin to toasted bread with a sprinkle of light brown sugar. This taste becomes more pronounced into a heavy, dark syrup sweetness (caramelized sugar?), and other flavors develop, such as tart prunes and raisins, as the beer rolls backwards on the tongue. Light solvent taste fades in with continued dark syrup flavor at mid-palate. Lingering aftertaste of bread crust with a light brown sugar sweetness. No to low focus on hefeweizen flavors: absent banana and pie spices. Very low noticeability of ethanol, even when warm.

Body is medium to medium-heavy with a fairly high level of carbonation that goes fairly well with the beer. Bit of spiciness from some component of beer, ethanol, wheat, or hop usage. Finish is dry, a bit sticky from the syrupy sweetness.

2006 Review:
A: Pouring from the bottle produces a massive, light-brown head that quickly deflates to a half-centimeter layer of dense bubbles. The beer is colored an impenetrable dark brown with tan highlights, a perfectly executed visage for the style. After sipping, small bits of lacing hang on the sides of the glass, adding a bit more dimension to the appearance aspect.

S: The beer's smell is dominated by molasses-sweet caramel malt with tones of mashed raisins and warmed alcohol. Contrary to its weizen origins, there are no detectable hints of banana or yeast in the nose.

T: Similar to smell, the taste profile is full of sweet, dark malt that is rich with molasses or burnt sugar, somewhat similar to a doppelbock. The presence of bittered plums and raisins is quite detectable, leading into a mildly bitter aftertaste due to the presence of some bittering hops. The alcohol is barely noticeable.

M: Medium to heavy body, quite in line with the style. Carbonation is low, which leads to a smooth feel on the palate that is quite pleasant, leaving a dry aftertaste conducive to further drinking.

D: The Pinkatus is a soid weizenbock with good scent and taste, though nothing terribly outstanding. The beer's attributes improve slightly as it warms, making the overall experience more enjoyable. Quite filling as a beer and worth trying if you enjoy the style.

500ml bottle served in its own Weissen glass.

A: Pours a cloudy dark amber to brown color forming a medium and very bubbled tan head. Good retention but only few spotty lacings left in the glass

S: Sweet grains. Crystal and Munich malts. Toffee. Wheat. Sweet bread. Notes of flowery hops. Earthy yeasts

T: Slightly sweet upfront. Strong notes of toffee, caramel malts, crystal malts, Munich malts. Wheat. Sweet brown bread. Very light hops bitterness as expected

M: Medium and creamy body. Medium carbonation. Sweet bread aftertaste

O: Good drinkability. The best Erdinger, for sure

Murky brown pour with large creamy tan head. Rich, chocolate raisiny nose with a hint of yeast. Creamy burnt chocolate maltiness with hints of banana, dark fruit. Finished with a woodsy dryness and some mellow wheatiness after the swallow. An interesting brew. My first taste in this style. The chocolate maltiness and the smooth wheaty taste seem to be at odds. For now thought Erdinger's seems to have bokered a peace treaty. For the rest of us it is simply a treat.

500ml bottle. Erdinger Weizen glass. Brown color, dark amber tints to the light. Beige froth lasts as a thin layer on top.. Aroma profile shows toasted malts, chocolate hues, floral & spiced notes, toffee & subtle Bamberg sweetness. Flavorful toasted malt upfront. Medium to full body. Moderate carbonation. Voluptuous, creamy mouthfeel touch by subtle spicy notes. Hints of bread & banana then floral bitterness arises & lingers into a refreshing & extended bitter/sweet finish. Hints of licorice candy on the aftertaste. Refreshing & delicious. A creamy, malty, dense & flavorful beer well balanced by slight bitterness !!!
