This is about as good a NA beer as could be hoped for, and in one of my favorite styles, Bavarian hefe. Now if only I could find a NA cask-conditioned bitter, I'd be set. Due to a series of unfortunate circumstances which I won't relate here, I am temporarily confined to the alcohol-free portion of the beer spectrum, and it hasn't been nearly as unpleasant as I'd imagined. This beer gives crazy head. It takes about 10 minutes to cram all the beer and foam from the bottle into a weizen glass. Snowdrifts linger inside the bottle, and the glass never loses its thick layer of suds. The beer is golden, and hazy but not glowing the way some hefes can be. There is some wax, pepper and clove in the aroma; the smell is perhaps the most weizen-like feature. The taste is predominately sweet, with some light graininess and grapefruit hop. It's oddly reminiscent of an American extra pale ale, like Full Sail. Cookie dough lingers on the tongue. Winter spices are here also, weird but not in a bad way. I've noticed in NA beers a certain bread-staleness which is normally masked or preserved in regular beer by the alcohol. Here it is not too intrusive. It's a tasty beer, with a full if not sensuous mouthfeel, and good drinkability. It is, surprisingly, closer to my dreamed-of NA bitter than I would have expected.

A - malt soda. Brown slightly flat

S - hops and ginger and brown sugar. Not unpleasant but not beer either

T - fizy ginger candies and orange slice gummies dipped in molasses.

M - not bad. Fizzy but malty like beer.

D - an acceptable but different example of the style

Pours amber with a large lasting head.
Nose shows honey, grassy and spicy hops and bready malt. A little doughy wheat shows underneath.
Similar flavours, very sweet. Bready malt, honey, unfermented wort, spicy hops. Too sweet.
Carbonation is much too high, although I can see why it is so, considering the sweetness.

Bottle: tall, slim 330mL bottle, vibrant blue label - better than your standard German weissbier label.

Appearance: a vibrant yet light yellow-straw with a fair carbonation kick. A fluffy head boils up, and settles to a one-finger white. Looks good - better than I expected for a super-low ABV beer.

Aroma: that's... Not so good. A pungent oversupply of pungent sweet grains. Not much other than that - not pleasant, but I am impressed that it smells of beer at least.

Taste: very much follows the nose, but with more intensity. The sole flavour is that pungent, awkward sweet grain, almost like caramel, but more like diacetyl. Not something I would choose to drink.

Aftertaste: follows through fairly closely - no hop bitterness, just a dry malt. Unpleasant.

Mouth feel: just about right for a wheat beer - fairly big carbonation to carry the flavour, with a light-to- medium body.

Overall: I still don't get alcohol-free beers. They always taste poor. If i wanted to drink something non-alcoholic, I would have water, or juice or something. Not this rubbish - particularly not for AU$45 a case (2013).

500ml bottle - the blue label is a nice departure from the brown and white ones I see flying off the shelves each and every day.

This beer pours a slightly medium golden hue, with three hefty fingers of puffy, fluffy marshmallow white head, which leaves some high cloud formation lace around the glass as in genially melts away.

It smells of sweet, grainy, warm cereal malt, a subtle biscuit character, some timid yeastiness, and a soft drupe fruitiness. The taste is baking bread, of the grainy, hippie sort, a still tame yeast component, and somewhat leafy, earthy hops.

The carbonation is on the low side, and thus quite approachable, the body a decent medium weight, and smooth enough to satisfy Diddy or Sammy, or whoever. It finishes on the sweet side, mostly grainy, a weird warming essence that isn't from the you-know-what, a subtle old-world drying hoppiness welcome in its innocuousness.

Another rather tasty low to no alcohol offering from the big German brewers, though I get damned little wheat beer characteristics in this one - does the alcohol removal process also take out the same from the inherent malt? If so, an acceptable enough sacrifice, I suppose.
