This place shot up the list of NY's beer bars to the top spot pretty quickly after it opened. I can argue whether it is the best beer bar (not according to my criteria), but it is a damn good beer bar. During the first couple of visits, I wasn't sure whether I'll return (Brooklyn is not exactly close to any of my routes). However, I keep finding myself going back regularly, especially when I want to spend some quiet time with a friend.
Atmosphere is very relaxing. The place is filled with odd flea-market type stuff all around - a subway sign here, an old baby scale there; hygiene poster from the mid 20th century is my favorite. The place is not pretentious, and it is very comfortable. There is a small garden in the back if the weather is nice. Restrooms have chalkboards all around for you to express your creativity. The bar has never been too crowded, but I always come there late.
Quality of beer is excellent, and selection is wonderful. Barely any US craft beer; this place is concentrating on craft imports (especially, Belgian beers). There are only 6 (or so) draft lines, plus one cask handle, and as a result, it may be hard to find some particular style on tap. However, whatever they have on is usually high quality and interesting, so I never had hard time making my selection. Bottle list is extensive. One drawback is that the place is fairly expensive. For food you have a selection of cheeses and cured meats. Had it once, and it was very good. Goes fine with Belgian beers.
Service was always good. Bartenders have always been friendly, relaxed, able to provide good advice and to answer any questions.
I can see myself visiting Spuyten Duyvil regularly if I lived closer. Excellent beer bar in all aspects.

A nice little pub with a welcoming feel and a fantastic beer garden out back. They have an interesting tap list along with a list of pricy rare beers available for a splurge. I was just in for a quick scouting visit but I plan to come back for a longer stay.
