I visited Rock Bottom twice during a long weekend in Portland. The light rail line stops right outside and it was two blocks from my hotel.
The atmosphere, service, and food are similar to any chain bistro and or chain brewpub such as Appleby's, TGI Friday's, or Granite City. I haven't been to any other Rock Bottom locations so I cannot compare this one in that regard.
The place was insanely popular at 8:00pm on a Friday night, but given the fact it was one of the few places open in the downtown, I shouldn't be surprised. The beers were all very drinkable, but nothing sensational. The amber and the stout were my favorites.
I won't tell folks heading to Portland they HAVE to stop here, but I wouldn't tell them to avoid it either. The variety in this town should keep you busy with local places.
