This brew pours a dark straw color, and maintains an off-white pillowy head of one and a half fingers. As the head rescinds it leaves moderate to thick lacing down the sides of the glass. The aroma is predominantly of sour malts, a touch of lime, and faint esters. The summation of the scents falls somewhere between mildly rancid and sulfuric. As we sip, the front is composed of unripe banana esters, and a clean chalkiness. As this disappears throughout the middle, the flavor is taken over by a peppery spice, curious sweetness, and hop bitterness. These carry over to the aftertaste, which is also wrought with suggestions of acetic and lactic acids. The carbonation is relatively high, and helps to accentuate the beer's creaminess. The body is otherwise medium to thick, and the beer is nicely coating. The abv is decent, and the mouthfeel is nice, but the flavor profile keeps this beer from a quick finish.

Overall, what we liked best about this beer was its mouthfeel. Although the carbonation is perceivably overwhelming, the thicker characteristics and creaminess certainly make up for it. As for flavoring, there was a disproportionate level of sourness which, if curbed, might have let some other flavors shine, while ultimately making the beer stronger in quality.

Bottle from Tres Bonne Cuisine....

Clear amber brew with a short lasting head.. no real lacing.

The nose is hot alcohol and butterscotch.. banana and cabbage.

Thick caramel and diacetyl.. vegetal notes are really heavy.

Not good... pretty damn bad.

One finger of head on an almost clear copper colored body.
The aroma is wet hay and barnyard with the slightest lemon. Bold.
The taste is a rich malty sweetness at first, then a lemon bitter with a quickly following candy sweet note.
Smooth texture with moderate carbonation and medium body.
An enjoyable beer for sure.

From: Binny's, Bolingbrook, IL
Date: None, but "705" stamped on label
Glass: Ayinger willi glass

Pours a 2cm head of off-white foam composed of medium and large-sized bubbles. Retention is about average, lasting a bit over a minute as the head falls to a thin cap atop the body of the beer, thicker around the perimeter. Lacing is fairly substantial and evident in interesting patterns scattered around the glass' sides, somewhat like the framing for stained glass. Body is a fairly light copper orange color with a hint of brownish hue; light brings out a strong, pale, copper tint through the hazy body. Carbonation is visible despite the cloudiness of the beer, appearing sparse and sluggish.

Aroma of sweet bread, slightly cracker-like, grassy and floral Saaz hops, a touch of honey, and a hint of bubblegum. Scent could definitely be stronger, particularly along the hop and malt axes; probably the weak point of the beer.

Taste is appropriate for the style, but for the ethanol content, I was expecting a much bigger beer in terms of flavors. Flavor is, overall, a little watery, somewhat disappointing, but not bad, still above what I'd consider average for the style. Tasting opens with somewhat bland sweetness with a touch of honey on the front of the palate. This changes by mid-palate to sweet bread, honey, mild European bittering hops with a green, leafy edge, and ethanol. Back of palate picks up increased European hop bitterness, bread-like sweetness, and ethanol. Aftertaste of mild breadiness, light graininess, modest European hop bitterness, and mild ethanol.

Beer is medium to medium-light in weight, with medium-low levels of carbonation, enough to just create a mildly fizzy, modestly foamy mouthfeel as this travels across the palate. Finishes dry, as one might expect from the bittering hop and ethanol content of the beer, with modest residual stickiness across the palate. A very pleasant and satisfactory mouthfeel, overall.

The color was a nice clear golden yellow with a reddish hue. There was very little white foam and not much lace on the side of the glass. The smell had a strong aroma of Saaz hops with a hint of citrus. The taste was of hops, with a citrus bitterness, but also, a citrus sweetness. A little bitter on the palate and aftertaste, but, not overly bitter. Overall, a nice balance for this Maibock.

Attractive in the big chalice, though the foam is coarse and doesn't last so well. Golden amber with an orange cast. From the crack of the bottlecap you get that whiff of skunky Saaz hops.

Sweet and thick mouthfeel. Seems like the usual Euro-lager but more sugary and stronger. Malty and slightly hot. Grows more unpleasant after some sipping. Sort of a malt liquor with a peculiar abundance of hops. Ends with a hot and dirty bitterness.

Another sweetheart deal from the distributors for BevMo. From the 500 ml bottle.

Appearance - Pours a clear, golden honey color with a finger width head and average retention, resulting in a lace that's sparse, hanging mostly around the edges.

Smell - Notes of honey and lightly toasted grain. Hints of grassy hop.

Taste - Follows the nose; starts with big honey sweetness, then a bit of grassy bitterness kicks in, increasing as the flavor works it's way into the finish. Subtle hints of butterscotch in the aftertaste, before more bitterness returns.

Mouthfeel - Medium in body, with decent carbonation. slick and smooth to begin, but ends a bit dry.

Overall - An interesting beer; lots of honey character, but the bitterness cuts through to give this brew a bittersweet quality not unlike a lot of Octerberfest brews.

This pours a light amber tan with some foaming that dies down into a tight lace. There’s a lightly sweet aroma followed by some light malty notes. I get a mild caramel hint of sweetness which rounds out the flavor. It’s honeyed and mellow and exceptionally smooth, with a nice rounded finish. A little too sweet for a starter beer but I could easily see having this one for dessert.
