A: The beer is crystal clear light yellow in color and has a moderate amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a finger high bright white head that has very good retention properties and consistently left a quarter finger high head covering the surface along with lots of lacing down the sides of the glass.
S: Light aromas of skunk and grassy hops are present in the nose.
T: The taste has flavors of pilsener malts and adjuncts—corn seems to stand out in particular—and is accompanied by a light amount of bitterness and skunk. Grassy flavors from the hops linger through the finish.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer wasn't horrible, although it probably would have smelled and tasted better if it didn't come in a green bottle.

I picked up a 24oz bottle at Binny’s in Plainfield, IL in summer 2012.

Pours a cloudy golden yellow color with a slight fluffy head. Scent is sweet with malts with some hints of citrus and wheat. The taste is unique with a decent volume and texture that is smooth and refreshing. Overall it has a sweet taste that drinks quite easy. Not exactly what I would call a great beer, but it’s made decently and it’s drinkable from a more rare country.

One of the best pale lagers I've ever had. Pours a translucent golden yellow with good carbonation. Taste is light and smooth with a mild sweetness. The aftertaste is almost nonexistent its just a clean finish with makes you want another sip. Extremely easy to drink and enjoyable flavor for a pale lager.

500ml Can

Appearance – Clear yellow colour with a small size fizzy white coloured head. There is an average amount of carbonation showing and there is almost no lacing. The head lasted for around 4 minutes before it was gone.

Smell - Malts, bread, corn, cooked vegetables

Taste & Mouth - The beer has an average amount of carbonation. I can taste bread/grains and malts. There is a corn syrup sweetness as well and an odd harsh tasting vegetable flavour. It ends with a slightly sweet odd vegetable aftertaste.

Overall – I really couldn't put my finger on what the harsh taste was, but this beer was not enjoyable at all. I've drank my fair share of boring euro beers but at least most are quite drinkable. I had trouble sowing this one. I would never buy this beer again.

500 mL light-blue and gold can covered in mostly Cyrillic text. Still gradually inching my way further eastward into Europe, with beers of Poland and Lithuania out of the way I figured Ukraine might as well be next on the list.

Pours a clear deep golden colour, with a half-finger of soapy white head that is mostly gone within a few minutes. A bit of lacing on the sides. The aroma provides nothing beyond light grains, corn and some apple juice. Mostly sweet but a weird sour vibe.

The taste is slightly off-putting, but not unbearably so. Way too much corny sweetness. There is some actual malt in there too but it has no chance against the corn. The only evidence of hops is a bit of a bittersweet lingering feel in the mouth afterward. Pretty heavy for the style, with a medium-light body and mostly watery. The ethanol becomes more noticeable as it warms, and the brew becomes a bit stickier. Very light carbonation for the style.

Pretty bad, and that is taking the style into account. Way too much of an artificial corn syrup feel to be refreshing, crisp, or any of those other things one might expect from a pale lager. Might retry this one in the future, if only because I'm not sure if it's an old can or not, but that definitely won't be a priority.

A - Pours a crystal clear, pale golden colour, finger of head with little retention and some sporadic lacing.

S - Sweet corn, grassy wheat, bitter lemon zest.

T - The sweet corn flavours are almost overwhelming, and the sweetness that lingers on the palette is rather surprising. Some leafy wheat flavours, grassy notes and more sweet corn on the finish.

M - Medium bodied, smooth and wet.

O - This one was too sweet for my liking, and certainly not something I would pick up again. I'm almost inclined to think they added sugar to this brew, but I can't read the ingredients so will never know. Pass.

No date on the label, but it was a new arrival to the shop.
Green bottle with a blue, white, and gold oval label. No Cyrillic.

Into a rinsed pint, it pours a murky hazed pastel gold in the light. Away from the light it looks murky brown like rusty water. One finger of white foam results from the pour, and it settles quickly, leaving only a thin veil across the surface and a threaded ring of tiny bubbles at the edges.

Smells like minty, grassy noble hops, and a touch sweet, but something musty also, like old paper.

Flavor is sweet, minor pale malt and cardboardy seltzer flavors. Lemon and grassy notes from the hops. Fizzy, astringent feel, slightly fuller body, like well water. A dry minty flavor in the aftertaste like spearmint. Gets you drunk, and freshens your breath!

500ml can poured into a pint glass.
ABV 5.3%

A - Poured a clear golden yellow with a decent but short lasting head. Ridiculous amounts of lacing. So much it seems unnatural.

S - Mild sweetness, hint of booze, and unpleasant adjunct notes.

T - Mild sweetness and then it's just a vile adjunct mess.

M - Watery, some stickiness, dry finish.

D - Drainpour. Had enough after half the glass.

A: Pours a clear golden colour with a finger worth of white head. Settles to a bit of a cap and lacing completely covers the glass.

S: Grainy and grassy with a little floral hops.

T: Grainy and grassy like the aroma. Finishes with some bread notes and some floral hops.

M: Medium carbonation with a medium body.

D: Nothing special about this but I would take this before any big macro beer. The body to this beer is perfect. And I could see myself easily having a few of these.

Pours a pale golden, fizzy yellow, with a white head that sticks around. Smells somewhat sweet with notes of canned corn, but with some light hops as well. Tastes very sweet, with lots of cooked corn flavors, some yeasty notes, and some light hops on the back end. Unfortunately the adjunct flavors overwhelm everything else. The mouthfeel is a bit harsh and hot. Overall, fairly unpleasant.

If it weren't for the fact that it's completely flat, Slavutych would look like a pretty good, if ordinary beer. Its surface is pathetic, without even a single bubble or thread of lining, although its body is not only sparkling clear and considerably lustrous but, unlike a lot of mass produced lagers, its complexion actually has a solid amount of golden tone to it.

The aroma is an almost even blend of industrial corn syrup and actual malted barley. Like its appearance, it has only the one fault but it's a major one; as agreeable as this otherwise may be, the sweetish tinge of corn is too much to overlook (err, oversmell). The adjuncts lend a processed, chemical smell that overshadows the pleasant, natural graininess.

Ibid everything that was just said for taste. Once again, the palate perceives two very different, but equally perceptible, flavours: one of unnatural, sweet golden syrup and the other of a blank breadiness that is agreeable and relatively indistinct. It seems they've used a good amount of authentic malt but the corn can still be quickly recognized.

The fact that they have used a sufficient amount of barley malt benefits the mouthfeel hugely; the beer isn't exactly feather light and offers, to some degree, a filling and quenching sensation. Most of the corn become drowned out in the aftertaste, replaced instead by a lightly toasty, bready note that, for the most part, sits OK with the palate.

Slavutich is far from the worst adjunct lager I've tried - but that's really saying all that much. I tend to think of adjunct derived beers like this as being kind of like post-op transvestites - sure, you can pass, kind of, but, with all due respect, there's enough stuff that just won't seem right that there's really no confusing it with the real thing.
