Pint on tap at Volo. Told this one was 6.5%.

Pours a clear dark orange, light brown, nice colour, thick off white head forms, settles down to a medium ring around the glass, good retention and drops a bit of lacing on the glass going down, looks pretty good. Smell is nice, very malty, lots of caramel, nuts, some grassy hops, toned down fruitiness, toasty and biscuity, nicely balanced, real earthy bitterness in the nose. Taste is similar, sweet and toasty up front, caramel, and nuts, some honey, big maltiness, light fruit in the finish, very dry and biscuity in the finish, some nice spicy bitterness, but very well balanced. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with low to medium carbonation, very drinkable stuff. I enjoyed this quite a bit, a really nice strong ale/bitter.

The beer is clear amber, has a nice even off-white head, good lacing and some curtains.

Mostly malty smells, honey, pears and nuts. Some grass.

The taste is also malt dominated, sweet brown bread, ripe pears and apples, nuts, grass and hay.

Medium low carbonation, soft and oily but yet refreshing, a nice good long bitter finish.

A solid very nice bitter.

Sample from bottle, RB European Summer Gathering 2005 in Copenhagen, Grand Tasting. Clear amber colour, low head (might be bigger with a vigorous pour). Citrus and nuts in the aroma. Pleasant nutty flavour and aftertaste. Not bad at all for a pasteurised bitter.

A deep reddish brown, with a smallish short-lived head.

Initial taste is a huge hit of malt, very nice, which recedes after a while. After that, it's very fruity, with a slight sourness on the back on the tongue, and a bit of mineral taste, followed by a mellow but firm and very long-lasting hop bitterness. The lingering bitterness after swallowing is very nice. A tiny bit watery between the fruit and hops.

[Unlike some other reviewers I didn't think this was very creamy -- London Pride or Marsten's Pedigree, for instance, seem much creamier.]

A fairly typical, but high-quality and super easy to drink bitter. Nice!

On-tap at Pizza Port Carlsbad

A: The pour is a golden amber color with a finger's worth of creamy white head.

S: A distinct butterscotch aroma along with lots of sweet caramel malts. Also a bit of a fruit note and sugar.

T: There is a strange fruitiness to this beer that I pick up right off the bat, yet I'm not quite able to identify what it is. Quite sweet and heavy on the caramel and toffee with notes of butter (diacetyl) and bread.

M: Medium in both body and carbonation.

D: Not something I'd really be interested in having again. Much to sweet and a very strange flavor that I'm not entirely sure I enjoyed.

On tap:

Clear deep chestnut colors with rich ruby highlights and a 2 finger tan cap that lasts and laces up the pint glass.

As this beer warms you get the wonderful aroma of sweet brown caramel malt, ripe fruits and hint of grass

Front side floods the palate with rich brown caramel malts, some nuttiness, some dark fruit, then the balance comes in with a sharp resinous bittering from long-boil targets that carries through to dry and bitter the finish and leaves a metallic bitter after taste.

A primo ESB very delicious and satisfying

On-tap at The Independent in St. Petersburg.

A - It pours at deep amber-brown hue, the color of iced tea, slightly hazy. It has a perfect tan head, like it is borrowed from a Guinness, as well as impressive blankets of lace.

S - Very buttery with a wee tad of caramel and a ton of biscuit. The hop is mellow.

T - The taste is strongly of barley, reminiscent of an English Barleywine without the strength and intensity. Robust malt and a little more butter are the primary flavors. There is no discernible alcohol presence. The hop is subdued, tending toward mostly a bittering effect rather than a flavoring, but the hop becomes more pronounced on the finish, to the point of mild astringency.

M - Very creamy; a superb feel.

D - I could drink a few of these, for sure.

On tap at J. Timothy's, served in a Fuller's nonic pint. This beer looks great. It has a deep, reddish amber color with a solid cap of white foam and good lacing.

The aroma is delicate but has a solid dark fruit character. Some cherries, red berries, plums, and sweet malt. No hops are detected on the nose, this is focused on malts and a characterful ale yeast. The taste follows the nose with sweet malts, caramel, some nutiness, and a full feeling fruitiness. Imagine an aged barleywine with a lot of dark fruit characters, and then imagine that beer being 4.8% abv.

The mouthfeel is very lightly carbonated and very smooth. It's full bodied and very malty for a beer of this strength. It was a nice beer to drink, but one pint was enough as it felt a bit heavy by the time my food came.

Served on-tap in a Fuller's nonic pint glass at J. Timothy's in Plainville, Conn.

A: Poured a deep, burnt orange color with a thin head of tight, creamy white foam which left a bit of sticky lace on the glass. Slightly hazy with ruby highlights.

S: Smells fruity and slightly herbal, like ripened red berries and plum with a dash of lemongrass over the top.

T: Flavor is quite smooth and fruity, with a full palate of sweet roasted caramel malt, apple, raisin and bits of orange zest mixed with a very mild, malty bitterness and some drying hops in the finish. Fairly smooth and creamy all around but fruitier and fuller than I had anticipated.

M: Mouthfeel was medium to full bodied and smooth throughout with only a slight degree of stickiness.

D: The 4.8% ABV is very sessionable and the full, fruity ale flavor with mild bitterness and hints of smoky roasted caramel would be enough to satiate my palate for an evening of drinking. A very nice bitter for the English imbiber within us all.

This beer has the creamiest head I've come across. It is almost resistant to me. The lacing is extreme. Heavy on the sweet fruit and caramel in both the taste and the nose. Hops are prevalent in the finish. The mouth is just as creamy as the appearance suggests. Fullers has yet to let me down.

Draught at King Edward, Ilderton ON- Deep, slightly golden amber with a creamy white cap. Nose is simple, and of caramel malts, some fruit, floral hops, some rye. Sweet malts meet fruity components of the same sweetness, some floral bittering hops, leading to a toasty nutty finish. Creamy, fruity, malty. A simple comfort beer, but one I am glad I got to try. Thanks for getting this one on RIch!

Had this one tonight at the Old Bay in New Brunswick, NJ (a once very famous beer destination in NJ).

Typically fine Fuller's product...the mouthfeel of this beer is full bodied (some like to say "oily"...but that makes it sound like a bad thing, which it most certainly is not). The malt/hop balance on this beer is as perfect as it can be. It is similar to the regular Fuller's ESB that is commonly found, but a but deeper in color, and definitely bigger in body and flavor. Very nice molasses notes and just the tinyiest hint of butterscotch.

Frankly if I have to mention anything wrong with the beer it would be that the carbonation was higher than it should be, obviously made for American tastes...or lack thereof. The high carbonation masks the beautiful flavors present here. At this bar (which at one time knew better) it was also served too cold. Fortunately both minor defects were easily remedied by 1) a good turbulent stir to release the excess carbonation and 2) taking my time drinking it to let it warm up to a more civilized temperature. All in all, a great beer. Hope it becomes more widely available...it is a GEM.

On tap at Max's the other day.

Mr. Harry pours a glowing copper color with exceptional head retention and decent lacing. I was impressed by the very creamy consistency of the head on this fine beer. On the nose there is a lot of sweet malt, with some underlying cherry cough drop aroma as well. Flavors on the palate generally replicate the nose, with the moderate sweetness nicely balanced by some subtle, underlying hoppiness. The beer is at most medium bodied, and is quite smooth on the palate. Drinkabilty is pretty good, with a slight hint of alcohol on the finish.

A nice solid beer, though I have my doubts I'd be able to tell much difference if I were to sample this and the regular ESB side by side. Still, for all that, this is a pretty good beer.

On-tap at Streets of London in Denver, CO.

A: Deep amber; as near as I could tell given the pub's low lighting. Carbonation was minimal. Soapy cream head had OK retention and left spots of lace.

S: Mostly nutty and earthy, with a bit of the butterscotch I've come to associate with Fuller's beers.

T: Mild, but that's the point with this style. Starts out with a slight malt sweetness that tastes somewhat of walnuts. Bitterness balances with a black tea flavor. Finishes relatively clean, with perhaps a hint of tea-like bitterness.

M: Medium-light body feels slightly slick. Carbonation was right on.

D: This is an unpretentious and easy drinking beer. Not the most complex Fuller's offering, but excellent for the style. Streets of London had this as a guest beer, so I have no idea when or if it will be back.
