Iconic example of the style. Pours dark honey orange with about four fingers of off-white head. Leaves a decent lace on the glass. Aroma is biscuit malt with some caramel, fruity esters, sour and earthy hops. A hint of banana? Taste is nicely complex, starting with sour apples, raisin, black current, medlar, a little lemon and maybe orange, a whole array of fruits followed by a little hazelnut, toasted malt, caramel sweetness, and an earthy hop bitterness but little resin. Nice English tea bitter/currant hop finish along with a sweet syrupy persistence. Body thinnish as per the style but flavor robust, distinctive, and salient. Some dry yeast on the palate to close. A must have for traditional bitter fans.
