Lovely dark chestnut black beer, with a creamy tan head on top that leaves beautiful lace on my glass. I can't believe I've let it sit long enough to leave lace..

The nose is toasty sweet, with chocolate, molasses, black licorice, and so many other things. The flavour is rich chocolate and malt, toffee, coffee, rich fruitiness underneath a slightly smoky burny layer. A maltish bitterness finishes the whole thing off and nips the flavour off in the swallow.

I think I understand porter a whole lot better now.

From a bottle into a pint glass.

A: pitch black with a thin layer of wispy foam atop the brew. Moderate lace

S: strong notes of coffee and dark chocolate fill the nose while malts are noticeable but only slightly.

T: follows the smell exactly. This is a very full flavor beer with lots of coffee and dark chocolate.

M: this one surprised me. I expected it to be on the heavy side based in looks and smell but I would call it medium at best. I would have liked it a bit thicker maybe...

O: My first time trying this one and I was not disappointed. I'm a huge fan of porter and stout style beers and this fit right it! Buy some and see for yourself.

Best before 12/12/14.

Appearance: Black on top and nearly translucent brown near the bottom of the glass. Poured aggressively resulting in a one finger off-white head that dissipated quickly leaving a thin coating of foam.

Aroma: Rich cream and chocolate with a hint of charred malt. Quite aromatic and very clean.

Taste: A good amount of hop impact right out of the gate. A solid bitterness with a sort of grassy flavor, which actually builds in intensity throughout each sip. The malt character that was so present in the aroma is a little harder to find in the flavor beneath the hops. However it does lend some much needed sweetness that provides a bit of balance. As it warms and I've been able to swirl out some excess carbonation, more of the creamy, chocolatey malt flavor has developed. Lingering aftertaste of dark chocolate and hop bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Nigh and day difference between when I started drinking and when I took the time to get rid of the excess carbonation. At first all the carbonation really stung alongside the bitterness, but once it was removed the creamier, more delicate flavors came out. I would recommend a very vigorous pour. It's about medium in body wit average drinkability for the style.

Final Thoughts: I think this porter would be a knock out on nitro or cask, allowing the malt to really shine. But even after my first taste of this historic beer, I completely understand why it has stood the test of time. Its just a plain great example of the style. Would I drink it again? Yes.

The beer pours some cream colored and creamy textured head that dissipates quickly. The beer itself is a clear brown with a bit of dark brown notes. The beer smell is rich and divine. The smell has a combination of bready yeast smell with a coffee smell and a sweet and light dark chocolate smell. The beer also has a milky smell as well. The taste is a bit different than the smell. The taste is less milky than the smell and has stronger bitter hop notes. The bready yeast note is still there but not as pronounced. The coffee roast taste is also there in the aftertaste. The mouthfeel is very silky with very little carbonation. Overall, a very good English Porter and worth its reputation.

Very dark brown appearance with ruby red tinges visible at the edges where light hits it. Aroma is of sweet, milky coffee. The taste is sweet with burnt notes and an interesting leathery flavour. Mouth feel is smooth and light to medium with mild carbonation.

Overall this is a good sweet tasty porter with a distinctive flavour. Very drinkable and sessionable but with pretty big flavours for the moderate alcohol level.

My mark out of 100 would be 88.

Had one of those a few years ago and I remembered it as really good but I was not impressed recently with the Fuller London Pride.

Poured it in a Pit Caribou pint glass. One of Gaspesie's nicest micro brewery. A small bubbly head formed and dissipated in mere seconds. Don't drink a porter if you want a 3 inch head. As Nigel would say, 'it's like, how much more black could this be. And the answer is none'. Got a beautiful blood red hue when held up to a light.

I get a nice whiff of brown sugar candied bacon.

That beer has got a good thickness while leaving the mouth oily with hoppy goodness. Man do I like a smoked Porter and this one gives it to you. Smoked malts on the intake, oats and dark bitter chocolate follow while you are left with a gooooood espresso aftertaste that will linger on for the next minutes.

Had some Dead Man's Party from Standard Vape while drinking this beer. It completely muted the cumby taste from the juice and left me with an otherwise pretty absent citrus note and brought a more natural blueberry flavor.

Expected a lot going in and I was not dissapointed. If you like a smoked porter, there's probably none more great!
