11.2 oz. bottle from BevMo. Pours opaque black with a small, caramel colored head. Nose of roasted malts with a hint of chocolate. Taste of roasted malt, caramel, black coffee and bittersweet chocolate. Little carbonation. Rich and tasty. Not light by any means. More of a sipping beer. Nicely balanced. A classic porter.

Nice porter of a dark color - but not completely opaque - and an ok yellowish foam that vanishes leaving a lace that reminds of cola.
The reason why this beer is exemplar in porter style is because it has a nice smooth taste and aroma of roasted malts. There are some nice tones of coffe and chocolate, but the malty tones are definately the highlights.
Feel is smoth, I prefer porters with higher body and carbonation.

A: [5.00] Dark brown - cola color. Very clear beer in the glass. Forms a nice tan 1 finger head. The head has dense bubbles on the side - and larger bubbles on the surface. The head recedes very slowly and evenly. Swirling the glass leaves fantastic lacing on the glass. The bottle lists the ABV at 5.4%. There is a best by date of Aug 4, '15.

S: [3.75] I immediately get caramel and hints of molasses. There are also undertones of charred malts - like your clothes smell after sitting near a camp fire.

T: [4.25] Really nice roasted malt flavor all the way across the palate. The taste lingers for forever. Strong tastes like bitter coffee go along with the malts. As it warms the flavor moves into a much sweeter range.

M: [4.50] Smooth, velvety texture. The lingering roasted malts stays on the tongue.

O: [4.25] This is a world class porter. Weighing in with only 5.4% ABV it is really packing flavor into that small space. It looks great in the glass, it hs an inviting smell and tastes delicious.

My 1st bottle, poured in a mug :

Cloudy dark brown color with a copper hue. Nice light brown head but weak retention.

Perfectly balanced aromas and flavors of toasty coffee and chocolate with a fruity sensation, like apples. A really fresh and tender taste with notes of toffee.

Rich and creamy, super smoky and almost chalky. Dense body with slight carbonation. The only drawback: the finish is too short...I want more!

Overall this is a wonderful beer, super flavorful with great balance in all aspects.

12 oz bottle, poured into a pint glass

Appearance: Pours a beautiful, deep, dark, almost opaque black color with an eighth of a finger of caramel-colored head that quickly dissolved away into a thin halo of foam that gripped the sides of the glass.

Aroma: Roasted malt with notes of freshly baked dark bread, caramel, some notes of chocolate and a hint of smoke.

Taste: Great! Roasty up front, imparting notes of coffee with a hint of smoke. Malty with notes of freshly baked pumpernickel bread. Some caramel and brown sugar-like sweetness as well. The beer finishes with just a hint of dark chocolate-like bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Medium to slightly chewy. Pretty smooth as there is practically no carbonation at all. With an ABV of 5.4%, there’s no presence of alcohol on the palate.

Overall: This is a great porter, one of the best actually! Traditional flavors of roasted malt and coffee beans, balanced perfectly with some caramel and brown sugar-like sweetness. A perfect porter and a perfect session beer!

11.2 oz. bottle poured into nonic
(best by June 20, 2015)

L: dark brown-amber and clear up to light ... beautiful color and clarity; weak, soapy head barely 1/4-inch tall that disappears quickly; keeps a wimpy collar, no skin; no stick and very little lacing

S: grapes; dark dried fruits ... plums, too ... kind of sweet; roasted wood (not burnt) ... very subtle roasting throughout, roasted malt is nice; coffee ... kind of acidic coffee

T: sweet roasted malt and fruity ... almost like a toasted English pale ale, for the malt is thorough with just a hint of earthy bitterness; slight coffee; semi-sweet chocolate ... not as sweet as the nose; at times almost has a rye-like twang, like the Irish dry stout -- but it's so weak it's hard to say for sure if that's rye or something else

F: lightweight but solid, good carbonation (much more than there appears to be in the weak pour)

O: great brew and the brewmaster's deft hand at handling roasted (not burnt) malt here is excellent; it's almost too easy to drink; never too bitter nor too sweet
