Foamy with a light beige lace that sticks to the glass quite well. Mild chill haze goes away as soon as the ale comes to cellar temperature. This sample was cellar for a year or so and seems to have held up very well.

Fruity, ester and musty yeast aroma. A touch of grain and hops in the back of the nose.

Medium to full in body with a lush mouth feel that is just as crisp as it is smooth. Bursting malt and juicy fruit, hop bitterness is solid and flexes with a sharpness and woody flavour. Malt is pretty thick with hints of bread crust and toasted grain. Lots of fruitiness with a think yeasty back. Esters are apparent with a warming alcohol in tow. Hint of buttery diacetyl. Finishes with a big lingering yeast, hop and ester bite.

My oh my, this is a lively ale to be had. A killer brew with expressive and complex flavours flailing everywhere. A brew I go back to more than others.

Presentation: 1pt 2.6fl oz English style brown bottle. Best before date clearly marked.

Appearance: Deep hazy copper with a frothy white lace, that stays.

Smell: Fruity, very yeasty with bold malt sweetness.

Taste: Smooth, full-bodied with malty mouthfeel that's backed by a heathly dose of fruity esters. Then earthy, biscuit flavours appear with a restained bitterness. A faint creamy chocolate note carries though from start to finish.

Notes: This ale has been bottled conditioned since 1995 in celebration of Fuller's 150th anniversary ale. A well made, balanced ale, especially for putting it though so much travel.

Its a Fullers kind of evening and this one finally emerges from my cellar. Poured into an old school English pint glass, this venerable and potent ale is a reddish amber hue with a nice solid tan head that reminds one of lighter-colored sponge toffee. My wife wondered "what was wrong with it". Haha! Aroma is expectedly rich and malty, with some spicy esters and tangy Goldings hops combining to evoke rich fruitcake and dried apricots. Palate is correspondingly rich and complex, with a gorgeous honeyed malt flavor and a rather light body. Does coat the mouth and the earthy, woody finish lingers for quite a while. Some shortbread, sponge toffee, treacle, and tree nuts (pecans?) provide the sweet, dark backdrop but there is also a bright, almost sour fruitiness like cranberries and even a whiff of smoke. The alcohol is well-concealed but it does peek through to add yet another layer of complexity. Certainly reminds one of its big brother Fuller's Vintage, albeit brighter, fruitier, and maybe less multifactorial ... Still, why compare? This one stands on its own considerable merits.
