A - Finger thick smoky looking head forms quickly and settles latently. Bubbles spew to the top, which helps support the head and gives the appearance of a beer with high carbonation. After 30+ seconds the head fizzles out to a film across the top of the clear ruby red liquid. Swirling the beer in the snifter rouses the beer's head back to an almost finger-thick consistency, though it's quicker to fizzle out and not as thick. Legs do form after swirling, though the consistency is thinner in body than say a West-coast IPA would be.

S - Sweet malt rises to the nose, one that contains raisin and a slight toastiness to it. The toastiness balances the sweetness from the raisin, and also allows a near-earthiness to come through. With that said, this doesn't come by way of yeast, but through the malts used.

T/M/D - Sweet caramel and raisin wash across the palate with medium body. The sweetness comes across the palate and finishes somewhat syrupy, though the sweetness is nicely balanced with toasted malts. Alcohol (6.3% ABV) seems to also be prevalent, though nothing out of style. The bottle conditioning definitely helped to elevate the carbonation and the bubbles prickle along the center of the palate and this, mixed with the mild bitterness from the hops, really makes for a nice beer. Drinkability seems to be nice, though the combination of malts & hops do provide for some palate fatigue and due to the level of alcohol, this is by no means a Session Beer. Nonetheless, on a colder night next to a warm crackling fireplace I would consider having another :)

C - The temperatures were warm today (84˚F), yet this beer still comes across as having a wonderful taste that caries with it a refreshing quality. I ended up utilizing it to make a marinade with brown sugar, dill, cranberry honey mustard and then put it over Wild Alaskan King Salmon with caramelized yellow onion and garlic; to say the least, it was yummy! This wasn't a beer that wowed me, though also not a beer that disappointed.

Prost!

P.S.: I don't believe my palate to be developed enough to fully appreciate this beer and haven't drunk enough beers in this style to fully understand what I am looking for. Therefore, please do not be turned off by my B rating, as by rights this beer should probably be a lot higher, but I am trying to rate it by what I experienced in this moment.

Ruby red colour. Great head and excellent lacing to the ned of the glass. Varied bubble sizes.

Smell is of nougat, malt, herbal spiciness. A bit of booze.

Taste is similar to aroma. Fruitcake, nougat, raisins. Malty sweetness well balanced with not inconsiderable bitterness..

Mouthfeel is perfect. Some carbonation..Bottle conditioning has helped the texture of this beer.

Overall a fantastic English strong ale. Some will say it would be better on cask but I have not yet tasted a better beer than this on cask in any English pub. Complex, deeply flavoured but well balanced and ultimately satisfying. A great advert for the refined craftsmanship of the Fuller's brewery.

My mark out of one hundred would be 92.

500 mL bottle poured into a straight-sided glass.

Appearance - Deep brown with some reddish flecks. Nice off-white head. Settles to a medium collar.

Smell - Kinda generically malty. Lightly fruity. Very light hop aroma.

Taste - Toasty and caramel malt. Bitterness comes and goes. Finishes with a dry woody bitterness.

Mouthfeel - Medium body. Medium low carbonation.

Overall - As with many of these beers, it's greater than the sum of its parts. A very pleasant beer.

Mahogany color with a thick beige head with medium retention and leaving laces.
Nice malty aroma with notes of English hops, cinnamon, dry fruits and caramels.
Bold flavor with notes of charred oak, caramel, raisins, multiple spices, lots of earthy hops, light tangy citrus, molasses, cocoa, tea leaves, their trademark yeast and crust bread. Quite dry and bitter aftertaste.
Medium body with weak carbonation.
This is a very fine Ale, very well crafted and bold on flavors with good complexity. Above my initial expectations. A must for malt lovers.
