Poured in a straight English ale pint glass.

A - Pours a golden colour, honey like. Fizzy head dissipates quickly but not completely. Obvious carbonation.

S - Malty and spicy, caramel, lime, bruised apple,

T - Nice bitter flavours with a malty backbone. Hops are present but not at the forefront. Perfumed, lavender, caramel, cider apple, cinnamon, orange peel, malt. Proper bitter aftertaste.

M - Nice crisp bitter bite, light creamy carbonation at the right level.

O - Very nice session type IPA, good balance of bitterness from hops and the body from the malt and good level of carbonation. A solid big production IPA.

Found on tap at 1600 Bier Haus in Calgary, must be fairly new there. The recipe for this beer appears in Steele's excellent monograph on IPAs. I glanced at the taps and noticed a purple "Fuller's IPA" sticker, which matches the name on a bottle at home in the beer fridge. Hmmm. A little research reveals that these are in fact the same beer, with the less evocative Fuller's IPA being the name appearing on the bottle-conditioned version. I imagine there could be subtle taste differences between the beer on tap and in the bottle. We'll eventually find out. For now, the Bengal Lancer I tried here arrived in an authentic Fuller's pint glass, a mellow dark honey/amber color with around an inch of off-white foam that left an intricate spider-web pattern on the glass. Nose is sweet and fruity, a smooth tangerine or sour peach aroma, maybe some red berries, and a decent dose of earthy peppery hops. This brew is 98% pale malt (2% crystal) and the malts do not emerge on the nose much, although there is a subtle but complex undercurrent of mellow bread crust and caramel buttressing a nonaggressive earthy bitterness from the English hops, the aforementioned citrus and stone fruit notes accompanied by another sweet fruit flavor almost like white grapes (!), a minty herbal undercurrent, a little leather. Chives?? There is another green flavor besides the mint, perhaps from the dry-hopping. All quite interesting and not in the damning via faint praise way. Very smooth semi-chewy body with a tastefully moderate degree of carbonation. Comparable to the excellent London Pride pale ale but with some added hoppy intricacies.

On tap at the Tap and Mallet in Rochester, NY.

Pours a golden amber orange color, with a 2 inch tight head, and good visible carbonation and lacing.

Smells include grassy, earthy hops, some orangey citrus hops, and sweet toasty malt.

This one has some nice understated bitterness that I like, that doesn't linger on the palate. The English-style hop flavor is very pronounced, grassy and tea-like, almost, with some suggestions of citrus as well.

Light to medium bodied, crisp, well carbonated. Very drinkable.

Could easily pull a few of these back easily, really enjoyed this one.
