notes from journal (2015-2016): it tasted neither more like beer or like gingerale, can't decide what it wants to be more. It's okay. Hazy pour, short white head

This is nasty. Just part of a good deal I got on a sampler 12 pack. I was tempted to pour this down the sink.

12 ounce can into pint glass, best before 12/19/2016. Pours hazy medium golden yellow color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and fluffy white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings down the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of lemon, lime, orange, grapefruit, ginger, peach, pear, wheat, cracker, light honey, light pepper/clove, and herbal/yeast earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance of citrus, ginger, pale malt, and light fruity yeast notes; with solid strength. Taste of lemon, lime, orange, grapefruit, ginger, peach, pear, wheat, cracker, light honey, light pepper/clove, and herbal/yeast earthiness. Light herbal bitterness and yeast spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of lemon, lime, orange, grapefruit, ginger, peach, pear, wheat, cracker, light pepper/clove, and herbal/yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice robustness and balance of citrus, ginger, pale malt, and light fruity yeast flavors; with a great malt/bitter/spiciness balance, and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light-moderate dryness from bitter/spiciness as well. Medium carbonation and light-medium body; with a very smooth, crisp, fairly creamy/grainy, and slightly sticky balanced mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 4.2%. Overall this is a very nice shandy style. All around nice robustness and balance of citrus, ginger, pale malt, and light fruity yeast flavors; very smooth, crisp, and refreshing to drink. Very flavorful for the ABV, and not overpowering on the ginger like I expected. Still tastes like a wheat beer and not a ginger ale. A very enjoyable offering.

Poured from the can into a nonic pint glass.

Opaque slightly muddy orange amber body color out of the can. Bright white and creamy to fine foamy looking head. Stands a solid three fingers with some decent retention as well.

Aroma is definitely ginger, and does smell very much like ginger ale soda. Not much sensing beer character or qualities here either, a sense of body at least gives some more depth on the nose though. Quite spicy actually.

Palate is a bit more muddled. A bit of density more so than some ginger ale soda, but also a touch weakened wheat beer. Not as particularly spicy and ginger tasting in the palate as the nose would hint at. A decent amount though of slight doughy bread finish and malt on the finish though.

Strangely the aroma seems less beer like, but then the palate is less gingery and more like a weakened beer that's been spiked. Of the Leinen shandy varieties this one isn't doing so much for me, but there's worse out there.

I don't know. Yeah, fine, gingery. That's nice. But this beer needs some lemon or something with it. The ginger with the base of this makes it tastes a bit off putting. Medicinal almost? There's a strange bitterness that basically ruins this for me. I love ginger and all, but I don't love this -- so I have to wonder who this would appeal to. And, I really have to wonder how this has a 78 on BA.

EDIT: Drinking my second one, I like this more than I thought. Still, it's something about the finish that turns me off. I like the lemon-ginger on the front of the tongue and midway through, but it falls off mid-palate and finishes like seltzer water. Yeah, I understand, that's what shandies tend to taste like, but that finish still bums me out about this beer. Anyway, bumping my rating.

L: orange and clear; pours with a thick head that dissipates quickly; no lacing

S: strong ginger and little lemon smell aerosolized the second you open the can

T: strong ginger flavor that carries some heat; bit of sugar/sweetness

M: effervescent and thin
