notes from journal (2015-2016) - deep auburn body, short head bubbly, hoppy aroma, very refreshing, overall good pale ale

12 oz. bottle, bottled on date is super scrunched and smeared on the bottleneck, but looks like APR2016. Acquired these as part of the Leinenkugel's mixed variety twelve pack. First time having a traditional 'pale ale' from these guys.
Poured into a Duvel tulip snifter.
A - Coppery amber-orange body, some chill haze, and lots of sediment in the glass, appears unfiltered. One finger of soft frothy off-white head that lingers as a cap, leaving some average fluffy lacing behind. Appears aptly carbonated. Looks very nice for what it is.
S - Aroma is intriguing - sweetened & grainy a bit, with notes of apparent honey / apple. Smells earthy & herbal.
T - Until this point, the spicing wasn't obvious to me. Upon further reexamination of the bottle, it reads "Ale brewed with a natural herb" which becomes apparent right off the bat. I'm not sure what it is exactly, but my best guess is chamomile? Flavor is dirty, earthy, herbal, with lots of honeyed sweetness & apple cider crispness. Subtle hints of cinnamon. Definitely not your typical American pale. Tastes a bit autumnal.
M - Feel is smooth & crisp. Bready & semi-dry on the finish, with some lingering apple cider / honey sweetness. Medium-bodied with nice carb.
Overall, a unique and interesting take on a hugely popular style from Leinenkugel's. Definitely nice to try a different approach to this style, and it's always fun to try new beers from Leine's.

From notes taken 04/25/16:
Quite clear and brassy with pinkish and orange tones. Overall, whiskey-like. Off-white fluffy head of good retention, leaving wavy ringlets of lace behind. Smells clean, grassy, toasted grains, mild tartness, herbal hops. Very herbal and tea-like flavor, fairly unique. Green tea with honey, specifically. Crackery in the background, barely noticed. Moderately bitter herbal finish, nearly soapy or perfumey. Medium-bodied, tight, spritzy and sloshy, then fine and sudsy, crisp.

Pours a large foamy head, with a clear amber color. Massive lacing.
Smells of piney hops, and some resin. However, it's the caramel sweetness which dominates here.
Smell is relatively subtle, with herbal spices, grass, some bready malts, and what can best be described as cinnamon. I also got some pumpkin as well. There is definitely some stuff going on here, I just don't find it entirely compelling.

Poured from 12oz bottle into schooner glass.
Appearance: a 2" foamy off white head drops slowly leaving plenty of lacing. Color is clear light amber with abundant streaming carbonation.
Aroma: caramel malty sweetness and fresh bread dough with some floral hops.
Mouthfeel: medium bodied and sudsy with a somewhat dry finish.
Flavor: an apple/vanilla odd flavor combined with a bit of cinamon. The malt and caramel recede into the background. The floral and some herbal hops are there as well.
Overall: a very strange tasting beer. Hard to grade this one as it does not taste within the style of English or American Pale Ale.

From the 12 fl. oz. bottle with an expiration date of May 9, 2016. Sampled on March 19, 2016.
It was a nice looking pour with its orange and copper-amber color under a modest white head. It had lovely clarity.
The aroma is rather bland with a bit of caramel malt breadiness and a bit of grass or perhaps a touch of spice.
Light to medium body.
The taste really confused me. Yeah, there was a little malt breadiness and a little mild bitterness but there was a weird cinnamon note. It felt like it should have been a Christmas ale rather than a pale ale.
