Poured from a 12-ounce bottle into a Sam Adams pint glass.

A: Bright, pale, hazy yellow with a two-finger head of sudsy carbonation which fizzled slowly and left hardly any lacing on the glass.

S: Like a tart lemon zinger, this brew has acidity and metallic hops on the nose. Very light and fruity.

T: Sugary sweet and tart from the get-go, this brew has heartburn written all over it. Lactic, acidic lemon sweetness builds through to a watery, tart and mildly bitter finish.

M: Light bodied and refreshing with some puckering lemon tartness and a slight acidic burn.

O: With a modest 4.2% ABV and bright lemonade flavors, this is a decent heat killer. However, I honestly might have to take a Pepcid or Tums before, during and after, because right now, there's acid churning around my stomach. The hotter the better for this one.

Leinenkugel's Summer Shandy is brewed in the style of a Shandy beer, roughly half lemonade, half ale, traditionally a shandy uses mild British ales, whereas the German equivalent is a Radler. While there is no label information, this beer is arguably one of Leinenkugel's biggest recent successes, creating several spin-off shandy flavor options (and likely even more to come). Available as a Summer release seasonal in bottles, cans and on draft.

Poured into a Leinenkugel's Pint glass. Served at 52º Fahrenheit.

(Appearance) Pours a crisp frothy clean cream white head over a very hazy and murky pale yellow body. Head retention is slightly above average- a fair bit better than average for Leinenkugel. Lacing is medium-light and patchy. Carbonation is busy and plentiful through the heavy haze. I can see where it comes closest to a Weissbier by appearance but still doesn't quite match the visual grandeur of purely wheat-based ales. 3.75

(Smell) There's no doubting lemonade comes into serious play in this drink, although it's more of a sweeter country-style lemonade, not the tart, sunny and light heavy drinking lemonade you can make from scratch. I did not find the lemon aroma harsh enough to compare to Lysol or Pledge, but I can understand the resemblance. It doesn't balance out fantastically in the aroma, a mild malty base is thoroughly overshadowed, and any hop bitterness or body is tough to find. Very much a hybrid drink of a beer- any subtleties of a weissbier are far overshadowed by the lemonade, and the end result isn't far from smelling of a Mike's Hard Lemonade or your choice lemon-based wine cooler. 3

(Taste) Mild pale wheat malt background with a substantial amount of light, tart lemonade character. Like the aroma suggested, the drink is only half a beer at the very most, and the wheat base is overshadowed, although quite easier to discern than in the aroma. The balance isn't ideal, but the style wouldn't suggest any higher expectations. If you can't decide between a lemonade and a wheat beer, but like lemonade ever-so-slightly more, this may be a fair option. Although this is my only Shandy review to date, I really can't knock it much as it is quite drinkable and enjoyable for what it is. 3.5

(Mouthfeel) Light malt, moderately acidic lemon juice and a slick, soft body. Carbonation does add some zest to the tongue. The body is medium for the style, light/medium overall. Alcohol presence is very low, concealed well by the lemons and the acidity. Overall it's a bit light on the body and texture for the weissbier crowd but lemonade isn't usually carbonated and does quite fine this time around, so I suppose it's a fair balance. 3.5

(Overall) I'd prefer a weiss bier that's wheat-malt forward with lemon subtleties any day over a Lemon Shandy, but I'm not too likely to overly criticize this for what it is. If you've never dabbled in the style before it might be worth seeking out but otherwise know that this is a fairly average choice amongst Shandy beer, and doesn't stand out in the craft beer crowd regardless of the style. 3.5

Appearance-It is a very bright shade of yellow but at the time the body is cloudy. A thin head formed with a lace that was spread out.

Smell- It smelled of lemon soda. As it should if it is to be like a real shandy.

Taste- I personally would have liked a little more beer taste than this shandy had. It still wasn't bad

Mouthfeel- Thin.

Drinkability- A good mixed crowd party beer.

Although it's an artificially flavored lemon, it is much better than the shock top shandy and all the rest of the shandys that are artificially flavored.

Pours bright hazy yellow with a foamy white head. Leaves a lot of lacing. Smells like lemonade. I don't have the greatest sense of smell but I'll be damned if anyone else can smell anything but lemonade in this. I like lemonade but I don't want my beer to necessarily smell like that and only that. The lemon flavors are real and pleasant. This kind of beer could easily go the way of Bud Light Lime, where it tastes like candy and not like fruit, but it doesn't. I still have a hard time picking out the beer flavors from it. Near as I can tell the wheat beer this is based on only contributes a foamy head and a bubbly mouthfeel. Clearly, this would be easy to drink on a hot day. But if I wanted beer, I would reach for something else.

Poured from a bottle into a Pilsner glass.

A: Pours to a hazy and yellow color. Not much head.

S: A noticeable hit of lemons. A beer smell is lingering behind the lemons but the lemon dominates.

T: I enjoyed the taste. My friends and I joke that this is the Arnold Palmer of beers. It has a straight-forward taste of lemonade and is accompanied by beer. The lemonade dominates the taste.

M: Crisp and refreshing. Fairly carbonated.

Overall this is a beer that I grab on a hot summer day. It goes down easy and really satisfies your thirst. My only complaint is that it is a bit too sweet. Drinkers who do not like flavored beers should avoid this.

A: Bright yellow with a small white head.

S: Lots of fresh lemon going on here with a decent amount of sweetness underneath.

T: Lots of lemon going on here. Slightly sweet. Some pale malt in the background, but a lot of lemon; and, it's actually fairly refreshing.

M: Medium body with a good amount of tartness and dryness from the lemon.

D: Fairly drinkable on very warm days out in the sun. Quite sweet and probably hard to have more than one or two of, but not a bad offering.

Lemonade yellow/white with way too much pure white head. It really does look like lemonade with beer foam.

Smells like someone dumped lemonade into Miller Lite. That's it's no great smell here. Cheap lemonade with beer. I guess that's ok since that's what a SHANDY really is.

I wish it was 100 degrees out so this beer didn't taste so infested with bad lemonade. Since it's not I'm not sure which offends me more the lemon pledge lemonade or the beer it's sitting in. Now if it were 100 degrees I would really appreciate what this beer stands for. Since I've had it many times on a super hot day, this beer gets a pass from me at this moment.

Very smooth and easy to drink. Lemonade does bring back those thoughts of being a little kid and having a lemonade outside in the backyard on a hot summer day. Now that I'm an adult, I can appreciate the beer in there so I can have some alcohol without drinking vodka.

Sh!t man you can drink these like water on a hot day! Today it's a little cooler and it's still really easy to drink [as I finish what's left in my glass]. I recommend this beer very cold on a very hot day!

Original Review 07-27-2007

A- Hazy light yellow, 2 finger white head fades quickly. Nice ring and lacing. Veryg ood sticking! Very light carbonation.

S- Lemonade. That's it.

T- Lemonade and a very light beer. (what? Is this still considered beer?)

M- Very light body, easy going down!

D- I could pick up a sixer here and there on a really hot summer day at the beach!

Nearly no head and definitely no lace. Cloudy, chalky even. Lemon yellow color.

Strong lemon aroma. I've never had a shandy before, but I imagine this what it might smell like.

This tastes like lemonade mixed with a pale ale, which I guess is exactly what it should taste like. Hard to evaluate since the lemon is so dominant--from initial taste through the swallow and aftertaste. I would say that it is refreshing after walking 12 miles, it doesn't necessarily make this a good beer--just easy to drink. Soft drink carbonation but decently bodied.

A: The beer pours a cloudy bright yellow color with almost no head, just a few white bubbles.

S: Mostly just smells like lemonade. It actually has a nice tartness to it, as if there might be some real lemons in it. Slightly sweet/sugary, though. Not much in the way of the base wheat beer.

T: Not quite as good as it smells. There is a nice lemonade flavor, but it's a bit watery. Somewhat grassy with a bit of straw flavor. Like the aroma, there isn't much in the way of actual "beer".

M: Light bodied with a medium level of carbonation.

O: Actually didn't mind this one too much. The aroma was much better than the flavor, though.

I tried this on-tap at a small local bar in Janesville, WI. This summer seasonal pours a hazy pale yellow color with a foamy white head. Mild scent of lemons and straw. Smooth lemony flavor with cheap straw grains. A little too watery but still a great refreshing drink for a hot summer day.

I'll review this beer as it were meant to be tasted . . . on a lake in the summer, in the parking lot of a concert tailgating the day away, etc . . . .

Pours out a pale, slightly cloudy yellow. No heavy carbonation to be noticed.

Smell is straight lemonade. A hint of bread/wheat on the backbone. Enticing when the temps break 90. Extremely enticing when the triple digits come into play.

Here is the kicker. I can drink this all day priming up for a concert, at a game, on my boat, etc. At night around a fire, watching football in the fall it falls way short and it would go un-opened. How can one rate a beer a solid B yet a meager D at the same time?!?

Overall I'll give this a C+/B-. Depending on the venue and the atmosphere in which one is drinking, as well as for what purpose one is drinking, this can be a downright good beer or a sadly weak choice.

Drink it when the thermometer breaks 90!

I shared this with the mrs. -into a pint chilled.

The color is slightly hazy like lemonade golden yellow with rocky white cap that retains ok and has small beading. The carbonation is visible and lace sticks haphazardly. The smell is kind of lemony, but a little like lemon pledge without much beyond that. the feel is good with slight juicy citric bite and refreshing feel of semi-high carbonation with slightly clean and semi-dry finish with only a slight amount of sweetness throughout. Tangy and somewhat like lemonade in that it starts sweet and the tartness comes later.

The tastes is actually better than I expected with nice lemony and slight citrus peel tinges with slight malt flavor rounding out the flavor with slight astringent in the back of the throat like lemonade but the shandy maintains a balance of mild malt with tart lemon and seems to finish uncannily clean. Overall what can I say - I like this as a summer quencher and could probably enjoy this year round it is really decent if you enjoy arnold palmers or tea coolers depending on what you refer to them as. The malt is mild and the lemony flavor refreshes in a natural way. I consider this pretty decent for what it is.

Leinenkugel Summer Shandy is a fruity beer that pours to a cloudy yellow/gold color with a head of foam that is thin and is comprised of very small, tightly packed bubbles, giving the beer a creamy mouth feel. This beer has a nose that is lemony with the scent of cereal grains in the background.

This beer offers exactly the taste one would expect based on the aroma, with flavors of lemon and more lemon and the faint taste of wheat in the background. This beer is mostly sweet, but it also has some sour notes and the slight taste of honey blended with the citrus. There is little or no discernable hop character to this product.

Leinenkugel Summer Shandy tastes quite a bit like lemonade- a quality that would normally convince me to lower my rating. But there are some qualities that make Leinenkugel Summer Shandy different from many other fruit beers and make it more enjoyable. First, the fruit is not syrupy or excessively sweet. The taste of lemon is obvious, but this beer doesn't taste like Kool- Aid or any other sugary drink. Second, it still has characteristics of beer, even though the lemon taste dominates. It's a pretty good tasting beer and it does make a good choice for a hot summer day.

This one pours a whitish yellow color and settle a lightly hazed straw color that resembles lemon juice. A fast dissipating inch of white head is observed. The nose is very lemony and citrus infused. Lemon & lime peel zest create the bouquet. Although quite tasty and citrusy up front, the after taste just reminds me of a watered down lemon/lime soft drink. Nothing too bold. The mouthfeel is crisp and light bodied, this is the highlight of this brew and certainly makes up for what lacks in the taste, considering how hot it is outside. Great for a hot day like today!

Appearance- yellow and cloudy and murky off the pour, very yellow in color almost like a lemonade

Smell- Very lemony nose for sure, it smells like lemonade really does and a little touch of wheat and beer,

Taste- tastes very unique in style where its almost truly a mix of lemonade and beer, it has good amount of lemon flavor up front and that becomes touch of hop and wheat in the back, its a little bit sweet in flavor but not overally cloying, keeps just enough balance

Mouthfeel- medium to light bodied with crisp carbonation good smooth beer

Drinkablity/ overall- overall this beer is decent and is pretty drinkable, i would call it almost some what of a novelty beer, its really a cross of being like a beer and fruit juice and being a less sweet manlier version of like a mikes lemonade, its not a bad beer certainly for a hot summer day or would do quite well out of a can at the beach but probably not something i would buy often just to chug sitting around the house, also a good beer to bring to people who don't really drink beer

Having never tried a "shandy" before I was very apprehensive. Beer with Lemonade sounded disgusting to me. I was mistaken. This hazy white/golden colored beer was a pleasant surprise. The sweetness and well, lemonade flavor make it a pretty good summer beer.

A - Pours a very cloudy golden yellow color with moderate carbonation. Minimal head is white in color and thin, dissipates quickly with little lacing.

S - Interesting smell for a beer, very lemony and sweet. Strangely, there is very little hint of standard beer scents like malts or hops. Though not like a standard beer, there is certainly something there to set it apart from a lemonade.

T - Very refreshing taste with an immediate lemon flavor. The lemon is a little sour and masks some of the wheat in the background. It finishes with some sour notes and a little aftertaste.

M - Very carbonated feel, almost a little harsh when you first take a sip. After the initial feel, the bubbles thin out quickly to reveal a moderate body.

D - Moderately drinkable, especially in the summer. The lemony flavor is very nice but gets a little sour after awhile. Good for a summer seasonal beer.

Poured bottle into pint glass.

Appearance: Pours a pale gold color that is mildly cloudy with a small head.

Smell: Strong lemon/citrus overtones in the aroma without any real hop presence. While it's inviting, it doesn't exactly smell like beer.

Taste: Has a mild lemon flavor that isn't too overpowering. Has no hops that I could notice. While it doesn't taste like a typical beer, it's still smooth and refreshing.

Mouthfeel: It's pretty thin and somewhat watery.

Drinkability: It's good, but I think I could only drink it on a hot summer day. It works really well with a burger.

The thought of beer mixed with Lemonade made my stomach turn. I will admit I went into this expecting the worst. But, alas! I enjoyed it!

It has a hazy, cloudy yellow color, almost as if the cloudiness came straight from lemonade being poured into the brew. Small white head.

Smells of lemonade, no hops detectable. The taste, well it is what you expect. Initially hit with the lemon flavor, but you get used to it. Its not very overpowering and not sour whatsoever. Its rather enjoyable.

Perfect for a picnic or an outdoor ball game. It's a shame Leinies doesn't make this year round, I could use some to fend off these cold Minnesotan winters.

OK, call me a girl (I am)...but this is actually ok for hot summer nights. It's got a relatively low alcohol content (4.2%) so it's also a nice session beer for tailgating a Brewers game and grilling out, when you're going to be drinking beer for a while, but don't want your head to explode the next morning. It goes down a little too easily. A little bland with the carbonation. Overly-homogeneous look.
It does have a very overwhelming "artificial flavor" taste and smell to it. I believe what this is based on is a German tradition of spiking a weissbier with lemonade during the dog-days of summer.
I was really into this beer last summer, but now that I've been trying so many new good beers as well as eating more organic and non-artificial foods, I'm kinda over it. I'll just get a good weiss and put some lemonade in it if I want to experience the "real thing".
I'd say try it for sh!ts and giggles, but if you insist on really substantial beers, this won't be your cup of tea. At all.
