A- Pale yellow color, cloudy, thin white head that faded quickly to a thin ring

S- Lemon lime soda, sugary, pale malts, very sweet

T- Lemonade, syrup, tart, citrusy, light malts, wheat

M- Light body, medium/heavy carbonation, fizzy, smooth, refreshing

D- Decent for summertime

I can only picture drinking this on a very hot summer day. Not typically my favorite style of beer but I still like it. (401 characters)

Hmm? I liked this but it is certainly a departure. Some people may spit this out confusing it with a lemonade. You can smell the terpenes before you even get this to your face. The head was almost non-existent which could have been operator error on the part of the kids bartending. But all in all it was refreshing on a warm day which is its intention. It wasn't overly sweet even though it was incredibly flavorful and it didn't have the astringency usually associated with poorer versions. This one falls into the lawnmowers or daygame category alongside Samual Adams Summer Ale. (582 characters)

Obviously it's lemony. Perfect for a hot day - my reward after mowing the lawn! only complaint is the lemon flavor is a little chemically on the palette. Tastes a little like lemon "pledge" smells.
Avoid cans - bottle is noticeably better (239 characters)

this one is probably a bit underrated here on BA. its got a pale hazy yellow glow, with a sudsy white head aver an inch tall. the nose is akin to a decent Berliner Weiss, lactic and tart, while also lemony and light. it feels less like a half lager half lemonade than it does a brewed beer with lemon, its zesty and acidic, refreshing and light, very fresh, and the lemon presence is huge here. its got a nice drinkability, and is very easy down. good bubbles, minimal body, although not soda-like as some can be. I love how real the lemons taste, not artificial at all, and I think the proportions are right. ive been recently appreciating the shandy style, and this one is sort of the original in the united states. I like it much better than many other leiny offerings, and would be happy to have this constantly on deck all summer, especially in the mornings and early afternoons. really this is pretty good. (912 characters)

A fairly light beer but pleasant. The beer smells like lemon zest. Taste is of a light wheat beer with a strong lemon finish. It has a light crisp feel to the tongue. It would be quite refreshing making it a perfect beer to drink after a long hot day. (251 characters)

A: Frothy white head is thick at pour. Fizzy yellow in color. Sparse lacing.

S: Lemon dominates a refreshing wheat smell.

T: Wheat flavor up front quickly turns to a strong lemon presence (expected).

M: Fizzy. But still refreshing on a warm afternoon.

O: Sessionable if you can handle the constant barrage of lemonade. (326 characters)

Well I know this is a average beer but because of the unique taste this is a just above average beer in my book.

The apperance is yellow it looks nice.

S - lemons really nothing extra.

T - I liked it but it is different it taste like the lemonade it was mixed with. I liked it but I can see people not liking it.

M - Mouthfeel is of lemons.

D - Again this is a different beer it is like a malt but it isnt. Thats okay it does what it is looking to do. My wife loves it. I feel it is agreat gateway into craft. (518 characters)

12oz : tulip

Pours an opaque, golden wheat color with a thick, billowy white head with great retention.

Strong citrusy, lightly sweet lemon predominately. Faint grainy, wheat backbone.

More of a balance between the lemon and wheat notes, though the lemon still finishes a bit ahead.

Medium+ body, foamy carbonation.

Not an everyday beer for me personally, but it certainly has it's time and place and is well done for what it is. (434 characters)

Nice golden color to the pour. Very cloudy with a nice white head...just what I like for a wheat ale.
Good wheat smell along with a lemon smell as well.
Taste is first of wheat taste. Followed up by a nice lemon zing. The first sip you think the lemon may be too much, but it gets more mellow after each sip.
The mouthfeel is great for what it is. It is nice and smooth with a an okay feel to it.
Drinkabilty is very good. I don't care what the usual "Beer Advocate" users think of this beer, but on a warm summer day I could drink a lot of these.... (550 characters)

Bottle from a 6-pack with 07218 mark (best by July, 21, 2008)

A- Looks like a very sweet lemonade. Transluscent, but I can't see through it. Fizzy head with soda bubbles.

S- Smells like a hard lemonade. I was expecting beer, but all liquor is good.

T- Not enough lemon flavor to be hard lemonade and not enough beer flavor to be a beer. Nothing offensive, but nothing impressive.

M&D- Feels light bodied and watery which is what I like. Easy to pound down when well refrigerated. Goes down like a nice glass of mineral water.

Overall- I will drink this when I want a light, refreshing, non-filling alcoholic beverage. Which is not often.

P.S.- This does not taste like other American Pale Wheat Ales. More like a Fruit/Vegetable beer if even a beer. (755 characters)

I don't see why people kill this beer. For those who complain it doesn't taste like a "beer" that is because a shandigraff is a combination of beer and lemonade; and considering that, it REALLY DOES taste like a beer - not winecoolerish in any way.

It is a solid session brew for hot afternoons in the backyard. To me, the lemon flavor wasn't cloying or artificial (as you might find with the Berry Weiss).

Don't compare this to your favorite IPA or RIS, have reasonable expectations, and you might just find that this brew is pleasing. (538 characters)

Re-Review :

Appearance : pours a hazy yellow color with 80% opacity. The head is small but mighty, fairly pillowy and rocky, about 1 finger.

Aroma : Lemon-lime, citrus soda...hint of lemonade powder mix, not much in the way of malt aroma, and absolutely zero hop aroma.

Taste : Fairly two dimensional but all of the flavors come together nicely. There's a weave of wheat, followed by some citrus soda flavors, and a malty/yeasty finish. Pretty decent out of the glass, but most times I drink it straight from the bottle. Straight out of the bottle you get more of a direct lemonade powder mix flavor, with less citrus soda and wheat.

Mouthfeel : Creamy, light bodied, refreshing. Appropriately carbonated.

Overall : I mean, it's Lemon Shandy. It's practically a rite of passage for anyone with a lawnmower and hairy armpits. Its perfection cannot be overstated at the end of a hot lawnmowing session or a backyard BBQ. On a cool evening it hits the spot, and at night its calming lemon flavor brings waves of comfort. A nice beer overall.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Drank straight from bottle so no comment on appearance.

Smells like copper and lemons. Hint of strong wheat at deeper whiff. Sweet, lemony, coppery wheat. That's it.

Taste - lemony and slightly bitter. A great shandy but on the wrong night this brew can be downright nasty. I just got done mowing the lawn and this beer is supreme. Quenches thirst like a Gatorade. If you tip it straight back and guzzle you'll bypass some of the beer bitterness and get a nice mix of fresh lemonade and lager. Low carbonation but just enough to tickle the tongue. Very refreshing.

Mouthfeel is watery and light. Just as it should be for a shandy. "Refreshing" will go into this category so it's the highest rated.

All in all, refreshing is the key word for this beer. Absolutely wonderful for hot, sticky summer days.

Nice work leinenkugels! (1,986 characters)

The aroma is great. The color when poured gives the appearance of an unfiltered beer. The first taste leaves you in confusion as to what type of beverage you are drinking. Overall, this is a good summer drink. It is light, fruity, and quite tastey once you adjust to it. (270 characters)

Very refreshing...especially on this 95 degree SPRING day in PA!!! However, remindes me of "Mike's Hard Lemonade"...but better, actually. (Less ABV%, but that's ok!) Nice change of pace...but not for an old-time "beer-drinker." It's worth a try...especially in the hot months....but NOT a beer to have with the game...or with your old man!!! Smooth, refreshing, and LEMONY!!! Good summer refresher. Leinie does a good job...and they're very unique. Gotta give 'em that. Cheers and saaalute my BA FRIENDS! This unfiltered wheat ale, brewed with honey and "natural lemonade flavor", is an attractive beer: its cloudy, pale-straw-colored body could be mistaken for lemonade, except for the giant creamy white head and thick swoops of lacing. Tart, mouth-watering lemonade completely dominates the nose; these citrus notes are the focus on the palate as well, but are less insistent, leaving some room for a nice light wheat backbone to show through. The finish is balanced, with a moderate citrus tartness that lingers awhile. The crisp citrus flavors, light creamy wheat body, lively carbonation and low ABV combine to make this an ace summertime lawn-mowing beer. (657 characters)

This beer is a really murky and pastel colored yellow. It only had traces of a head, but a decent looking bready one at that.

Nose is really lemony and rather tart. Just like smelling a lemon tart desert pie. A little bit of grains and bready malts in the backdrop.

The flavors on this one are as smooth as chalk. Smooth semi creamy mouthfeel. Very lemony and slightly tart. Really thirst quenching and satisfying for a hot, humid summer day. I can't complain with one of these in weather like this. Only a little bit of wheaty malts comes through in the finish which blend rather well with the flavors of lemonade. One would never think that these actually complement each other until it's tried.

Is this a really light and unrefined beverage? Yes but it's damn tasty in the sun. (784 characters)

Hands down the best shandy I've had. Smooth, easy drinking, refreshing and flavorful. Just fine on a hot afternoon. Ignore the poor ratings this one gets. If Founders or Bells or Sierra Nevada or whomever brewed the same beer people would love it. (247 characters)

Leinenkugel's Summer Shandy poured a light color, with a decent head. It smells very strongly of lemonade, and had a sweet smell. The taste had a very strong lemonade flavor, and was rather sweet. Very very easy to drink, anybody would enjoy this beer. Overall its very different, and not bad, worth a shot, great on a hot summer day. (334 characters)

$1.70 for a 12oz bottle at Jack's. Pours out to a cloudy pale yellow, forming a soapy white head with poor retention and no lacing. Carbonation is moderate. The aroma is invigorating with a crisp nose of lemonade which is Pavlovian in it's saliva-inducing ability. Mouthfeel is ffizy, crisp and thin with a light body. The taste is actually pretty dang good, as far as shandies go. Lemonade up front with a continental macro-wheat middle and finish. Seeing as how the other Leinie's are ridiciously sweet, this isn't so, and is actually quite palatable. Slight degree of lemon-bitterness with a cracker finish. No off-putting yeast.

Not a very good beer, but as far as shandie's are concerned, this is pretty damn tasty. I could kick back a few of these on a hot summer day. (777 characters)

It tastes exactly like the style it is meant to emulate, all in one bottle. Better on tap or from a can, doesn't taste quite right from a bottle. Great for hot summertime drinking. (182 characters)

Tasted On: 06-30-2012
Freshness: Best by 10-01-2012
Packaging: 12 oz. brown bottle, twist-cap
Glassware: Perfect pint
Purchased: 6-pack from Kroger

Appearance is cloudy yellow - it looks like lemonade. The head is 3 fingers, white, with a creamy consistency. The lacing and head retention are both good.

Aromas are big on lemons and citrus - it smells like lemonade, with a slight beery presence.

The taste features more lemon and citrus. It is tart, but not overly so. Its like a lemonade mixed with a light beer, which I think is the goal since it is modeled on a German radler. No bitterness. The flavor is good, but lacks depth.

Mouthfeel is somewhat prickly with high carbonation and the citrus notes. Body is light and the aftertaste is mainly of lemons.

Overall I found this to be an enjoyable and easy drinking summer beer. It does taste less beer-like than many brews, but if the radler is a part-beer and part-lemonade mix, then I think this may be spot-on. (972 characters)

This was hands-down my favorite new beer of the summer. . . and I'm sure it will be a staple of mine next summer, god willing they brew it again.

It pours a bit more yellow than your average pale beer, and obviously smells of lemons. I consider it to smell like a sugary sweet lemon, almost similar to a kitchen cleaner of some sort.

The taste really is what it says: Half beer half lemonade. That may not sound too great, but wow it is the most refreshing drink to have on a hot summer day. Some of my friends loved it, others hated it. Its really hit or miss with this one. With me its a hit. By taste alone I would think they actually did just mix a normal beer with minute maid lemonade, but it still has a reasonable abv, making me believe that is not the case.

All i know is that I like it and I will buy it again next year. From my experience, it is much better on-tap than from the bottle, but suitable either way. For me, this is one of those beers that you like so much and your so confident that people who dont even like craft beer, or beer at all, will actually enjoy it- so you stock up and hand it out.

My summer refreshment can be summed up right here with this one. . . and at a nice low price! (1,217 characters)

Served on tap in a pint glass.

Appearance: Hazy amber color. White head, about a finger thick.

Smell: Grassy like a hefeweizen and lemon/citrus is strong.

Mouthfeel/Taste: Light to medium bodied and smooth. Wheat, grassy, lemons and some hops.

Overall: Decent summer brew. Goes nice on a hot day. (300 characters)

12oz bottle best by Jul 08 12

Pours looking like lemonade, cloudy yellow with a weak sudsy head. Smell is pure lemonade, the only other scent I pick up is watery grain. Tastes is mild wheat/corn with a lot of lemon flavor. The lemon has bite and zest to it, but is in balance with the beer flavor. This isn't too sweet, which I appreciated. Mouthfeel is a little thin, like all leineys.

This beer gets ragged on unnecessarily I think, because it's sweet and not very beer-y. Kind of a gateway beer. It's not something I would drink all the time, but I might keep some around for the less beer-inclined among us. (613 characters)
