Appearance: very very dark amber with a generous deep brown head. The head alone looks delicious, which it very much is.

Smell: Sweet hops, caramel, sugar oak, and bit of booze.

Taste: dark roasted malt, chocolate for sure, and chocolate alba.. Sour and bitter finish.

Mouthfeel: creamy, viscous, and full bodied.

Overall: a great value beer with strong, bold, complex flavors.

A: Black body with ruby highlights. Two finger tan head with decent retention, some moderate lacing as well.

S: Worsteshire hits and then some dried fruit. Some roast char as well, with a bit of licorice.

T: Pretty nice, much better then aroma indicated. Medium to dark roast hits, along with the sharp saltiness. Dark fruits are in there as well, and some woodiness.

M: Creamy but with some prickly carbonation.

O: Pretty nice stout overall, lighter in body then the bigger RIS, but a nice transition between an American and Double or RIS.

Russian imperial stout From leinies "Craft Beer line" Big eddy . Good for them that there trying to show a little creativity with this IRS but it kind of annoying them pretending to be craft beer makers. This Is a IRS for people who don't normally venture outside of normal leines options like summer shandy or honey weiss. This IRS will not challenge your taste buds and ends up being pretty forgettable.

Thanks to tayner for this brew as part of SS 2008. Cheers.

Pours as black as my heart. Thin head. Smells very sweet for a RIS. I taste mostly sweet fruit without as much malt as I would expect from a RIS. Mouthfeel is good but this is too sweet for my preference. Interesting beer nonetheless.

Dark dark purple/brown. Thick tan head with large bubbles.

Cocoa and dark fruits. Hint of roasted coffee.

Dark fruits, especially plum. Semi sweet chocolate. Creamy espresso and lightly roasted grains. Hints of grapefruit provide light bitterness. Not as intense as other RIS's but the flavors stand out more as it warms.

Silky smooth, good carbonation.

Seems they stayed inside the box on this one. Still very good, not quite great.

Big Eddy RIS pours black with a head the color of wet sand which laces nicely.

The smell is sweet with notes of dark fruit and a bit of alcohol.

The taste is slightly sweet with notes of dark fruit, chocolate, and coffee.

Mouthfeel has some weight on the tongue, slightly coating with a pleasant alcohol aftertaste.

This is a nice beer to have when you are chilled to the bone. I would like to see how it ages.

12 oz. bottle into glass snifter.

$3.25 / ea.

A: Opaque black body topped with a small brown head that quickly dissipates leaving no lace and just a bubbly ring of cover.

S: Ripe red fruit, banana, molasses, and slight booze. The banana is out of place and creates a bit of confusion. Still, an interesting blend.

T: Bitter coffee, and slightly tart. Hop character is strong leaving a potent aftertaste. Quite a bit of fruit flavors throughout, not something I'm used to seeing in the style. Interesting. Could do with less bitterness.

M: Light to medium body and moderate carbonation. Noticeable carbonic bite and tangible bitterness on the tongue. Lacks the smooth character I look for in the style.

D: One max for me. The flavors are too intense in the wrong spots.

O: Worth a try, and may be worth aging. Definitely on the low end of the style.

Pours seal brown with molasses highlights and a moderate head of mocha foam. Retention and lacing are both very respectable. Aroma smells of molasses and herbal hops--a contrast to be sure. Alcohol is also present in the nose. The flavor profile features big roasted malt notes and herbal, almost medicinal, hops. Coffee and dark fruit lurk beneath the surface as well but are more difficult to discern behind the bitterness of the hops (warming helps some in this regard). Some dark chocolate creeps through in the finish as well. The mouthfeel is moderately sticky and appropriate for the style.

If not for the pronounced herbal hop character, this would be a really fine imperial stout. Unfortunately, the bitterness masks the more delectable nuances of the malt. It's still very flavorful, and I'd be happy to have it again, but it falls just shy of balanced.

poured from 12oz bottle into pint glass

A-dark brown with about a 1 finger head that leaves some lacingas it fades

S-roasted malt, dark fruit, and a little licorice

T-much like the smell with some earthy hops to balance out the finish

M-creamy medium bodied

O-pretty solid all around, I let this age gor about 6 months and I think that it helped it out, I tried one when I first picked up the 6 pack and definitely prefer the aged one

A - This is what a RIS should look like. Thick pouring, no head, extra thin tan ring of foam. Dark, dark black with only a hint of ruby in the thinest area on the top.

S - Lots of roast and sweet malt smells.

T - I started out giving this a 3.0, but it got better the further along the path the beer got. Roast, more coffee then chocolate. Some toffee. Then some sweetness and a little hop flavor. Very little alcohol taste for the amount. Has more of a warming feeling in my stomach then a "whiskey" burn on the back of my tongue. Probably how the Russians liked it!

M - Very full, thick. Slightly astringent on my tongue.

D - Well, I wouldn't drink this daily, or weekly. Lots of work and flavor. But on a cold winter night such as this with 7"-10" of snow bearing down down over the next 12 hrs, it's about perfect
