A - This is what a RIS should look like. Thick pouring, no head, extra thin tan ring of foam. Dark, dark black with only a hint of ruby in the thinest area on the top.

S - Lots of roast and sweet malt smells.

T - I started out giving this a 3.0, but it got better the further along the path the beer got. Roast, more coffee then chocolate. Some toffee. Then some sweetness and a little hop flavor. Very little alcohol taste for the amount. Has more of a warming feeling in my stomach then a "whiskey" burn on the back of my tongue. Probably how the Russians liked it!

M - Very full, thick. Slightly astringent on my tongue.

D - Well, I wouldn't drink this daily, or weekly. Lots of work and flavor. But on a cold winter night such as this with 7"-10" of snow bearing down down over the next 12 hrs, it's about perfect

Pours seal brown with molasses highlights and a moderate head of mocha foam. Retention and lacing are both very respectable. Aroma smells of molasses and herbal hops--a contrast to be sure. Alcohol is also present in the nose. The flavor profile features big roasted malt notes and herbal, almost medicinal, hops. Coffee and dark fruit lurk beneath the surface as well but are more difficult to discern behind the bitterness of the hops (warming helps some in this regard). Some dark chocolate creeps through in the finish as well. The mouthfeel is moderately sticky and appropriate for the style.

If not for the pronounced herbal hop character, this would be a really fine imperial stout. Unfortunately, the bitterness masks the more delectable nuances of the malt. It's still very flavorful, and I'd be happy to have it again, but it falls just shy of balanced.

A - Pours a thick black, with a slight, sepia head. Retention is short-lived. Lacing is thin.

S - Smell is heavily of rich caramel and roasted coffee.

T - Taste is of thick, creamy malts. Lots of sweet caramel notes, with some submissive roasted coffee and chocolate flavors making their way in for some balance. Leaves a slight, lingering bitterness. Alcohol is present, but concealed enough.

M - Full bodied, and light carbonation, with a thick, creamy feel overall.

O - Overall, The heavy emphasis on the caramel sweetness without a lot else going on makes it a bit too one-dimensional for me. Not a bad beer, just not my favorite example of a RIS.

A- Black can't see through it, a nice tan head no activity.

S- Sweet malt very nice but stops at nice.

T- Nice malt but a slight bit bitter but no hops to the flavor, just too sweet with some more hops to balance it would really take it up a notch.

M- Nice thickness a nice improvement to most of Leinenkugel's offerings.

D- Drinkable but only if you can handle the sweet it could be really off putting for some. I don't mind it really.

Color: pours very dark brown, almost black. sits midnight with a very small dark brown rim. big, rich, creamy mocha head with great retention

Smell: over-ripened bananas upon approach. wierd. transitions to roasted malt and a little bit of chocolate and alcohol.

Taste: initially pretty smooth with, again, some over-ripened bananas then decent balance of roast, chocolate and malt sweetness and very light smoke. alcohol pops through quite a bit mid-palate and through the finish, which has a low-medium bitterness and a light roast and smoke flavor.

Mouthfeel: low-full body with medium carbonation

Notes: very interesting. impressed with the layering of aromas and flavor but not sure i like them.

Russian imperial stout From leinies "Craft Beer line" Big eddy . Good for them that there trying to show a little creativity with this IRS but it kind of annoying them pretending to be craft beer makers. This Is a IRS for people who don't normally venture outside of normal leines options like summer shandy or honey weiss. This IRS will not challenge your taste buds and ends up being pretty forgettable.

pours dark with about a half finger of mocha head that fizzles quickly. little to no lacing. smell is smokey and boozy. taste leaves alot to be desired. very fusely. big presence of the alcohol. mouth is thick and burny. leaves a bit of a burnt malt taste in my mouth. not really a huge fan of this one. swing and a miss leinenkugel

Big Eddy Russian Imperial Stout from Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Company
Bottle into pint glass
A – Black brew produced a large hot chocolate colored head which forced me to pour more gently, decent staying power, left scattered broken lacing 3.5
S – Dark chocolate, toffee, cashews, and vanilla… nice aroma 4
T – Bitter-sweet chocolate fades to something reminiscent of over-sugared bad coffee then towards the finish it shows a mildly herb bitterness with an interesting sweet sourness to it 3.5
M – Creamy “feel” from carbonation but not the needed viscosity, moderate body… not up to par for a RIS 3
O – Mixed emotions on this brew, not firing on all pistons. Sweeter than my personal preference and that is the primary reason I’ll skip it for a different RIS… an OK beer. 3.5
