On Tap at Miller Tech Center (9-26-07), 11.3% ABV. Pitch black color, frothy amber-brown head. Aroma is a wonderful blend of roast, spice, chocolate, light coffee and a touch of vanilla. Flavor is raisony sweetness, vanilla, spice, roast and light chocolate. Medium to full bodied. The finish warms the insides as it goes down. Another great Big Eddy beer.

12 oz bottle thanks to a trade with mnbearsfan. Poured black with a two-finger, mocha head with good lacing and retention. Nose is roasted malt, some nuttiness, molasses, and a tinge of alcohol. Taste is very sweet up front - chocolate, roasted malts, licorice and some dark fruit. Some coffee, mild bitterness and alcohol in the finish. Texture is thick and syrupy. This was a nice sipper I would try again.

Poured into a tulip.

A: Dark, viscous black beer with 1 1/2 fingers of mocha colored head. Thick sheets of lacing as well.

S: Burnt, toasted malts. I'm also getting a leathery, smokey scent. Some faint molasses as well.

T: Heavy roasted malts. Light chocolate and the same flavors in the smell.

M: Chewy feel to it. Have to give it Leinenkugel's for this one. Full body and moderate to low carbonation.

D: A nice sipper, but not outstanding in my book. Glad to try this one.

Nice brownish blackish color with a brownish head. Taste of coffee, chocolate among others. Smells heavenly. Very crisp feeling in the mouth and smooth drinkabilty going all the way down. Definitely a good beer to have a good day or when you had it up to your eyeballs at work

Poured from a 12-oz bottle into a snifter.

A - Pours deep black with no translucency or highlights whatsoever. Has a finger of rich mocha-brown head with decent retention. Slow, lazy bubbles drift up the glass through the viscous liquid. No lacing.

S - It is a mixture of bittersweet chocolate bar, an estery grape-like aroma, and some mild espresso undertones. No appreciable hop aroma. This smells very very sweet for an imperial stout.

T - Unsurprisingly, very sweet up front with lots of bitter chocolate and caramely malt. Minimal amount of acrid or burnt grain flavor through the middle (I would actually prefer/expect more for a RIS). The sweetness really predominates across my entire palate, morphing from malty, to chocolatey, to berry-like in the finish. Not much hop bitterness or booziness to speak of.

M - Strays more on the thick side, which is expected for the style. Carbonation is good, possibly a little strong. Leaves the mouth feeling syrupy and sugar-laden.

Overall- The guys at Leinenkugel's took a good stab at the RIS style. This is a decent beer, but it strays much too far on the sweet end with not enough hop/burnt grain character to balance it out. With a little tweaking, this could really be a great stout.

Poured from bottle into Duvel tulip.
40 deg.
Appearance is standard RIS with slightly less carb and head.

Smells of rich malt caramel chocolate. Nice implications

"Taste" delivers initially, helped significantly by good mouthfeel. The carb lingers a bit long and pollutes the aftertaste, bringing out some slight booze and astringents.

Bought this in response to a friend who was desperate to try it based on a description in some sort of beer calendar.

No discernible date on the bottle, although when I bought it, I was told it was the 2010 release. I bought 3 for about $10.

A: It's an impy stout alright. Inky black, absence of head. Sort of ruby brown around the edges.

S: Roasty. chocolate, huge prunes and figs. a little sour like condensed milk. pineapple, walnuts and almonds. Quite complex. One needs not think and sniff until smoke pours from the ears to get all manner of scents from this.

T: Like the scent, this is very complex. bitterness enters the equation now however, and boy is this bitter!

M: Bitter and dry. lots of sweetness generated from the eleventy-seventy malts used in this, but the bitterness controls everything fairly well.

D: Being so complex, this is a sipper, and one I couldn't possibly enjoy in great quantity.

Bottle poured into a snifter.

Pours a dark black with a brownish head that fades quickly.

Smell is of dark malt and a sweet molasses

Slight coffee flavor with a strong malt presence. Hint of chocolate in the finish. Alcohol burn not really present in the finish.

Not an awesome RIS but considering a 4 pack was about $10, not a bad value either. Not something I would seek out but a good beer.

wow, this is quite a departure from the the standard line of Leinenkuge's products, this is a serious RIS, huge malt presence, lots of prune and toasted malt flavor followed by a nice long bitter hop finish, the only hint of the massive alcohol presence is the way you feel after you drink one.

overall, a very nice beer, nice to see this brewery prouducing something of such high quality. def. try it if you can find it.
