I am not a big fan of macro-breweries and I consider Leine's one of them now being a MillerCoors subsidiary but I had heard from some friends I trust that this was a pretty good brew and I am also a sucker for "limited release" beers.

I could tell right away that this beer was going to be good because of the way it poured into the glass. Not only did it have a nice dark look but it was obviously a thicker beer which is how I like Imperial Stouts. If I am drinking an IS, I want it to have substance.

The smell wasn't anything special; pretty much your typical malt/dried fruit smell of an IS but it wasn't overpowering.

The taste was really good. I got a smoky, dried fruit, malty taste with a pretty noticeable alcohol presence. I didn't get as much black liquorice as I usually get in an IS but the taste was pretty solid.

The mouthfeel also was really good as I could tell I was drinking something substantial.

This was an outstanding beer. Besides for everything I mentioned above, I am also a sucker for Imperial Stouts and tend to rank them higher than other varieties of beer but still, this was a great example of an IS.

A - Looks pretty damn nice in the snifter. A tan, frothy head forms briefly, only to be swallowed up by the deep, near-black base.

S - This is a Leinenkugel's brew? It's a bit more worldly than say... Sunset Wheat. As opposed to artificial flavoring, I smell a nice, hearty RIS. Big molasses and chocolate notes, combined with a raisiny sweetness.

T - Hmm. I'm not blown away. It's rather sweet throughout, with a backend that's just trying to even itself out with dryness to no avail. Big, sweet, creamed coffee, baker's chocolate, and a sugary sweetness combine to make a less than stellar brew. No booze notes. I wonder if this was better when it was fresh?

M - Somewhat light for a RIS, as well as a bit too crisp for a RIS.

D - This is a one and done. The sweetness is outta control.

Notes: Far and away a better attempt than their fruity lineup, yet still could use some work. I don't think this would hold up in a cellar situation very well.

A- pours black with a tan/brown head that settles after a couple minutes to a thin layer. Healthy lacing as well.

S- There's a slight medicinal scent here, along with cocoa and more of a mocha/cappucino as opposed to a coffee. Had to mark it down a bit b/c of the medicinal quality.

T- medicine taste comes through in the taste with the taste of burnt cocoa beans. Tastes like they were going for some nice chocolate covered coffee beans, but just missed the mark.

M- seems slightly oily, but finished rather dry carbonation seemed misplaced and overrepresented

D- sure, it's drinkable but there are much better examples out there

I'm reviewing this based on the thought of Leine releasing an IRS this late in the general IRS game and how it might match up against the others.

Pours a jet black with a nice, brown head on it thats about a half inch thick.

Slight coffee and chocolate greet the nose at first. Some nut gives way after a little bit.

Taste is sweet, definitely big on the chocolate. The roasted chocolate malt comes through nicely. More hazelnut is present in the taste. Its got a lot of flavor and is very malty.

This beer is smooth. I thought with as much head that it had that it might be a little on the carbonated, harsher on the tongue side but its not. It's really a nicely done beer.

To be honest, when I first heard of this beer I thought that Leine was trying to run with the big boys and really had no reason to try an IRS. I feel that they landed in the middle of the spectrum though. Not a bad attempt and its a pretty decent brew.

Appearance: very very dark amber with a generous deep brown head. The head alone looks delicious, which it very much is.

Smell: Sweet hops, caramel, sugar oak, and bit of booze.

Taste: dark roasted malt, chocolate for sure, and chocolate alba.. Sour and bitter finish.

Mouthfeel: creamy, viscous, and full bodied.

Overall: a great value beer with strong, bold, complex flavors.

A: Black body with ruby highlights. Two finger tan head with decent retention, some moderate lacing as well.

S: Worsteshire hits and then some dried fruit. Some roast char as well, with a bit of licorice.

T: Pretty nice, much better then aroma indicated. Medium to dark roast hits, along with the sharp saltiness. Dark fruits are in there as well, and some woodiness.

M: Creamy but with some prickly carbonation.

O: Pretty nice stout overall, lighter in body then the bigger RIS, but a nice transition between an American and Double or RIS.

Russian imperial stout From leinies "Craft Beer line" Big eddy . Good for them that there trying to show a little creativity with this IRS but it kind of annoying them pretending to be craft beer makers. This Is a IRS for people who don't normally venture outside of normal leines options like summer shandy or honey weiss. This IRS will not challenge your taste buds and ends up being pretty forgettable.

Thanks to tayner for this brew as part of SS 2008. Cheers.

Pours as black as my heart. Thin head. Smells very sweet for a RIS. I taste mostly sweet fruit without as much malt as I would expect from a RIS. Mouthfeel is good but this is too sweet for my preference. Interesting beer nonetheless.

Pours seal brown with molasses highlights and a moderate head of mocha foam. Retention and lacing are both very respectable. Aroma smells of molasses and herbal hops--a contrast to be sure. Alcohol is also present in the nose. The flavor profile features big roasted malt notes and herbal, almost medicinal, hops. Coffee and dark fruit lurk beneath the surface as well but are more difficult to discern behind the bitterness of the hops (warming helps some in this regard). Some dark chocolate creeps through in the finish as well. The mouthfeel is moderately sticky and appropriate for the style.

If not for the pronounced herbal hop character, this would be a really fine imperial stout. Unfortunately, the bitterness masks the more delectable nuances of the malt. It's still very flavorful, and I'd be happy to have it again, but it falls just shy of balanced.

Dark dark purple/brown. Thick tan head with large bubbles.

Cocoa and dark fruits. Hint of roasted coffee.

Dark fruits, especially plum. Semi sweet chocolate. Creamy espresso and lightly roasted grains. Hints of grapefruit provide light bitterness. Not as intense as other RIS's but the flavors stand out more as it warms.

Silky smooth, good carbonation.

Seems they stayed inside the box on this one. Still very good, not quite great.
