12oz. brown bottle with no freshness date, but as this is a seasonal offering only available from January to March and this is still March, I am sure this is pretty fresh stuff.
The beer poured a clear amber/red color but it only made a half finger of light brown head that lasted less than 30 seconds. It also left virtually no lacing on the glass.
There was a roasted malt and caramel smell to this beer, but it was faint. No robust bock aroma.
For a beer made with 4 different malts, it was awful weak in the malt flavor department. It did have some nice roasted malt in there along with some caramel for sweetness, but there just wasn't enough of it. I could not taste any chocolate malt at all. At just 18 IBU's, the hops are barely noticeable. It doesn't have a bad flavor, it just doesn't have enough of what it has. Bocks should have more flavor than this.
The mouthfeel is light to medium bodied with really crisp carbonation.
At just 5.1% abv, this beer falls below the lower limit of what BA recommends for a bock, so not only is the smell and flavor lacking, but so is the alcohol. That said, it certainly is easy to drink and price wise it's reasonable, I just don't know if It's something that I would go out of my way for to have in the fridge.
