Enjoyed on tap at 3 Squares in Maple Grove, MN. Served in 10oz fluted glass.

Transparent ruby color with little head and some lacing. Low carbonation, but a smooth mouthfeel. Definite scotch whisky flavors, smokey, hint of peat and wood, boozy, prune, dark cherry, spicy (cinnamon, clove), orange zest.

Well-crafted example of this style.

Never had the chance to try the Big Eddy series before so when i saw this one on the shelf i had to grab a 4 pack. I like wee heavys as well, so on with the review!!

(poured from a bottle into a sam adams sensory glass)

Appearance is very good, minimal lacing, decent but not overly heady, nice dark brown color.

Smells great but ive smelled better(and worse!) Good earthy and peat notes for sure.

Taste was above average. Good peaty notes with a nice healthy malt finish.

I thought the mouth was a bit understated. Not watery per se, but just a bit less than i thought it should be. Carbonation was spot on.

Overall i am pleased with my first taste of the big eddy series and look forward to more of them.

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass.

Look - dark red in color, clear, but with good carbonation and about a finger's worth of foam that dissipates somewhat quickly.

Smell - interesting malty smell mixed with a caramel or cocoa-like aroma...almost reminds me of a kid's cereal.

Taste - interesting taste too. It's a little on the musky side at first, but then transitions into something with a bit more bite and kick. Still not overwhelming though.

Mouthfeel - pretty well-balanced, but leans just slightly on the watery side.

Overall - not a bad brew at all. It's got a very intriguing palate and complexity to it.

A - Poured out a dark burgundy color with a one-finger, white head of foam. It left thin trails of lace on the glass.

S - It smelled of smoke and peat. Great earthy notes.

T - It tasted of smoked malt, peat, toffee and some caramel. A touch of bitterness added some bite.

M - It was crisp, sharp and smooth. A medium bodied ale with a dry finish and a warm alcohol presence.

O - This is a nice wee heavy. The Big Eddy series is pretty good.

Appearance - Cola brown. Dark, but appears clear. Maybe a little red. Short tan head. Fairly persistent.

Smell - Rich medium-roasted malts. Molasses, raisins, syrup.

Taste - Sweet and malty. Initial impact is a little subdued, at least less flavor than I was expecting. Rich and raisiny. Finish has a little citrusy sourness. A touch of alcohol warmth.

Mouthfeel - Medium. Feels a little light.

Overall - Doesn't have everything I want in a Scotch Ale, but it's quite a lot more interesting than Berry Weiss.

Single for $2.99 from the Village Pump. This rounds out the Big Eddy series (non -bal) for me.

A very dark reddish brown with a dense, light brown head with good retention and no real lacing, this looks decent. The nose is solid. Malt, burnt sugar, toffee, a little smoke, leather and English hops are most noticeable up front. There's also a nice dark caramel aroma, along with a little bit of an herbal, tea-like aroma. Petrichor is noticeable, along with a moderate nuttiness, rather almond/almond oil-like.

The palate, however, is mildly disappointing. Opening with plenty of malt character, this has some heavily toasted malt, burnt sugar bitterness, toffee, some grainy astringency and is, in general, rather intense. The leather pairs quite well with the dark brown sugar and dark caramel, but ultimately, the lack of balance is to the beer's detriment. Nice flavors of rum and raisins are also present. Rather dry and highly carbonated, this beer finishes with flavors of burnt sugar , brown sugar and some sweetness. Some earthy hop bitterness is noticeable as well. Medium-light in body, this beer is quite nice on the palate but for the high carbonation. As it warms up and the carbonation dies down, it improves significantly, and I'm upping my T score to 3.5.

On tap at Wine 101 in Wake Forest.

A - poured a dark brownish amber with a big, dense, thick, brown head that has great retention

S - heavy apple aroma with some faint caramel

T - a bit sweet, a hint of sugar, faint caramel, big apple fruitiness

M - medium bodied, smooth, a bit crisp

This is a mediocre Scotch Ale. The apple notes are intense in both aroma and flavor. It's much better than the usual Leinenkugal offerings, but I probably wouldn't have this again.
