Bottle into 20 oz. widemouth glass.

A- Nice black color, with red shining through at the bottom

S- Strong dark chocolate, hints of vanilla. Not as much vanilla as expected, but still a nice aroma.

T- A pleasant sweetness mixed with a bit of roastiness. An almost abbey-like estery-ness is also detected.

M- A little too thin, nothing special.

O- An underrated beer. A good porter.

Like a lot of people on this website, I was understandably hesitant to try this beer as we all strive to drink high end craft beers and over the years, Leinenkugel's has started to get lumped in with the macro breweries mostly because they are owned by Miller Coors. My local paper's beer critic gave this a solid review though and the Big Eddy Series that Leine's has done has intrigued me so I figured this was worth a shot. It was better than I thought it would be.

There was definitely a sweet, vanilla flavor to this beer but it wasn't overdone. I could still taste all of the characteristics I enjoy in a porter. Similar to their Summer Shandy where even that beer tastes good in the right setting (hot weather, your local festival where you are looking at a long day of pounding beers) this tastes good along with some Christmas candy or cookies.

Twist-off 12oz long-neck poured into a mug.

A: Transparent reddish-brown with a huge tan cola-like head that seems to fizzle instantly away.

S: Roasted malt and even some toasted notes. Artificial vanilla flavoring. Malt sweetness with hints of earthy nuttiness, wood and suggestions of chocolate.

T: Same as the nose; porter notes of nuttiness, woody earth and roasted malt come through. Vanilla flavoring is pretty strong and not quite authentic. There are some oaky notes here too, and faint chocolate again.

MF: Lighter body with some creamy tones and a barely bitter finish.

O: Amongst the artificial vanilla tones there seems to be a faint metallic note that screams macro. Overall this beer is ok; it definitely sounds better than it really is.

look: 2.5 | smell: 2 | taste: 1.5 | feel: 2.5 | overall: 1

Appearance: Pours an extremely dark ruby red…it’s dark, but light does get through the center…light mocha colored head did form and a thin layer remained…after a couple of minutes though, all foam is gone and it looks old…(2.25/5)

Smell: Creamy, somewhat perfumy, vanilla right off the bat…caramel and roasted malts…too much vanilla smell in this one makes it feel cheap…(2/5)

Taste: Much like the nose, creamy vanilla right off the bat…it does have a bit of a stale taste to it that I don’t find particularly delectable…bourbon barrel flavor, toasted malts and mild hint of cocoa come out after initial creamy blast…after taste has a bit of that vanilla perfume predicted in the nose…(1.5/5)

Mouthfeel: Light to medium body…medium carbonation…does have a wet feel…(2.5/5)

Overall: I typically like porters, but this one feels cheaply done and a bit like a gag gift at Christmas…I didn’t buy this, so I don’t feel so bad dumping it out and looking for another option…NEXT! (0/5)

Poured from a bottle into standard pint glass this beer is disappointing right from the start. Dark watery color with a slight head that disappears very quickly with no lacing. The appearance completely lacks the characteristics expected in a porter. The smell is primarily of vanilla extract. The feel is thin and highly carbonated, almost feels like a cola in the mouth. Tastes like a commercial winter ale with vanilla extract added. Overall this beer is certainly drinkable but disappointing.
