Wow- I love Kölsch, so I was surprised when I saw All About Beer rated Canoe Paddler the best American one out there. I was stoked that I hadn't tried it yet. The twee name was enough to keep me away forever.
Well, it's rather pale for a Kölsch and doesn't have the sort of sweet maltiness in the nose. I'm really disappointed actually because it mostly just tastes like a slightly less skunky Session Lager than anything. Or, a full-flavor macro lager. Not a "golden ale."
It's not terrible, but it's a big misfire. Would rather buy Hale's serviceable Kölsch any day of the week over this one. In my experience, Alaskan Summer still is the daddy here.
