"Refreshing Kölsch-style beer with a touch of rye and three specialty hops." Brewed in the style of a Kölsch with Rye added. This is a new addition to the seasonal lineup for 2013, as both a new spring and summer seasonal.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle to my Leinenkugel pint glass. Served north of 49º Fahrenheit.

(Appearance) Pours a boastful head of a gold-tinged white head with a thick sudsy consistency over a very clear golden straw yellow body. Carbonation is relaxed and plentiful, clarity is very high with few imperfections. The head recedes at a decent rate and retention is good, lacing is medium-thick and stringy. 3.5

(Smell) Aromas of cracker malt, a touch of biscuity character hints possibly to rye but doesn't complicate the aroma. A moderate sweetness is prevalent in the aroma of this beer but an expected vinous character is equally bold, hints of white grape and other light tart fruit comes into play. Potency is medium. 3.25

(Taste) Very light thin cracker malt, modestly sweet and moderately dry makes up the bulk of the flavor. A mellow bready character is notable, but doesn't impact the malt character nor the easy-drinking nature of this beer- it really could have gotten away with so much more at no cost. Some light malt syrup is lesser necessary, but the sweetness isn't quite as distracting as the aroma predicted, the vinous characters are also far better in-check. The hop profile is altogether nonexistent, with a shallow bitterness and no contributing hop flavor to speak of. Altogether it's a passable representative of a Kölsch, nothing more and nothing less. 3

(Mouthfeel) Clean, light with a subtle dryness and a faint drizzle of pale malt syrup for a slick texture. Carbonation doesn't impact the texture much at all, just adds a touch of creaminess and smooths out the sweet side of the beer. The body is medium for the style, light/medium overall. Alcohol presence is very light, drawn out a touch by the mild vinous notes. I was hoping for more character out of the carbonation, as it didn't contribute much to the final product. 3.25

(Overall) Leinenkugel plays it fairly safe with this light-drinking, mildly sweet Kölsch. Although a touch sweeter than desirable at times, I found it to be generally enjoyable, although not all that memorable. My general fusses include a poorly featured hop profile in both taste and bitterness, especially upsetting since I was expecting no less than 3 varieties to be featured. I also found the use of rye to be pretty much indistinguishable from a Kölsch without it. As it was one of the more unique variations on a Kölsch, I was really counting on a noticeable impact. If you're a Kölsch connoisseur, this may be a favorable option to you, otherwise expect nothing fancy out of this beer. 3.25
