Leinenkugel's Orange Shandy
12 oz. brown bottle, dated "MAR31 14 A20012305"
Poured into a pint glass, Leinenkugel's Orange Shandy looks very much like a Bavarian hefeweizen. It's quite cloudy, and it's got the same gold-orange color to it. The head is a creamy bright white that holds fairly well, although the lacing is a bit more limited.
In the nose it smells like orange juice, or some orange "drink". It's bright and citrusy.
The flavor follows suit, although it doesn't taste like orange juice - watered-down orange juice, yes, but not the real thing. It's citric, a little bit sweet, and just lightly carbonated. The medium-light body gives it an almost "juice-like" quality. It's very much like an orange "drink", and I say that at least partially because I'm not really finding any "beer" to it. Sure there's some malt, and you sense a bit of alcohol, but considering that orange juice has about a half a percent of alcohol anyway that's not really out of place. It's just 4.2%, by the way. The sweetness is kept in check, and because of the acidity it finishes dry and refreshing.
So to sum up, it's interesting and quite refreshing. If you like shandy's, this has more alcohol than quite a few of the European versions, and it's not as sweet.
