“O'zapft is!” It is tapped, indeed. Oktoberfest, arguably the greatest festival in the world and the beer that bears its name, was born from a Bavarian royal wedding celebration. We’re paying homage to that celebration with a bolder, toastier take on an Oktoberfestbier that can only be described as “Über.” With a tawny orange hue, toasted malts and spicy hops, our Big Eddy Über-Oktoberfest is then dry-hopped for added hop complexity.

Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Co. "Big Eddy Über-Oktoberfest"
12 oz. brown glass bottle, inkjet coding is illegible
$1.99 @ Wegmans, King of Prussia, PA

As I took my first sip I was so surprised that I had to quickly look at the bottle and ask myself "Who makes this?" - Leinenkugel! The malt is just so rich and full of Munich and Vienna malt character that I was surprised. It's also nicely backed by spicy and grassy hops, and I was just blown away. In my mind this is how an Oktoberfest should be, and probably was years ago. Of course this is an "Über-Oktoberfest" now, packing a solid 8.5% ABV, but the alcohol never shows. It's clean, superbly balanced, and richly malty.

A: Pours a relatively clear medium copper-ish amber in color with moderate amounts of active visible carbonation and moderate brown + ruby red highlights. The beer has a finger tall foamy tan head that reduces to a medium to large sized patch of mottled medium thick film covering a little more than half of the surface of the beer surrounded by a very thin film covering the majority of the remainder of the surface of the beer and a medium thick ring at the edges of the glass. Light to moderate amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate aromas of toasted + caramel malts with a lighter aroma of spicy + herbal hops. Light notes of booze.

T: Upfront there is a moderate flavor of toasted and caramel malts with a moderate amount of brown sugar sweetness. That is followed by light to moderate flavors of spicy, herbal, and grassy hops which impart a light amount of bitterness in the finish which fades away pretty quickly. Hints of booziness in the finish.

M: Slightly heavier than medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Slightly sticky with a light amount of alcohol warming in the finish.

O: Not sure I feel like there is much need for an imperial Oktoberfest - I like the style in general because it is approachable and easy to drink while making the imperial version reduces the ease of drinking.
