Enjoyed from a growler, this interesting take on an Oktoberfest pours a BRIGHT, clear, luminous orange with a tight beaded dissipating head of fine bubbles and spotty lacing. Nose of rich bready malts, light herbal hops, and moderate alcohol. Flavors are a malt bomb up front and to the sides...rich caramel notes collide with heavy sweet bread. A light cherry like quality comes through on the back and on the aftertaste with some herbal hop bitterness rounding out the flavor profile. Wet and chewy mouth feel. Very unique, although it could easily be mistaken for a wee heavy or a scotch ale.

NICE

Cheers

12oz bottle served in a tall Schneider-Weisse glass at fridge temps. Bottle was dated 02/2014 for freshness but I think that's a best before date, the neck of the bottle had a label that said 2013.

Appearance: orange honey colored with a nice thick head to start that faded to a thin layer of froth at the top of the beer. Moderate visible carbonation, seems low for the style.

Nose: hops up front with some sweet malty notes in the middle, heavy on the malty, I can smell some residual alcohol notes as well.

Taste: spicy and complex malt profile, really wonderful rounded flavor and no alcohol discernible, lemony and herbal like a cough drop, the cough drop is really weird and tends to overpower the other notes. I like the initial spiciness of the hops but it is overpowered by the maltiness and chewy quality of this beer.

Overall: this is a weird one. I don't know of any other dry hopped German style ales. I like experimentation but the Oktoberfest Marzen style is already perfected and probably should not be messed around with. I still can't get over the cough drop taste! This was a four pack. I'll review it again in a few month.

L - Medium amber. Clear. Short off-white head. Persistent.
S - Rich malt. Raisin, dark fruit mainly.
T - Potent. Sweet and very rich medium roasted malt. Prune, raisin, a little caramel.

This seems to go beyond the oktoberfest category. More like an scotch ale or something imperial. Pretty good for Leine's though.

The beer looks good, but not great. The smell is awesome but not really indicative of this style so I couldn't give it a 5. The taste is something different for a Marzen; it is sweet and citrusy, almost like a holiday lager or ale in my opinion, the extra umph of the hops change the character. The feel is excellent at first, but then left a weird filmy taste in the back of my mouth. Overall the beer is good but there are others that I will seek out this time of the year.

Pours a orange amber, with about a half inch tan head that disappeared rapidly to a an eighth inch. Little to no lacing. Aroma is heavy sweet malt, with a touch of grassy notes. Taste is very sweet malt with just a touch of some citrus and alcohol on the back end. Mouthfeel is medium to light, with little carbonation. Overall, this is not too bad, but not outstanding either, something I've come to expect from the Big Eddy series.
