Poured from bottle into a pint glass

Appearance – The beer pours a amber color with tons of small carbonation bubbles seen streaming up through the brew. Upon pouring there is a two finger foamy white head. The head has a decent level of retention, holding on for about 2 or 3 min before fading to leave some light foamy lace on the sides of the glass.

Smell – The aroma is heaviest of a musty and stale grain smell mixed with some aromas of corn and a bit of a papery smell. Mixed with these, are some lighter notes of a grassy smell producing a rather adjunct like aroma overall.

Taste – The taste begins with a smooth bready flavor with a light caramel sweetness. There is a little bit of a grassy taste upfront which grows stronger as the flavor advances on to the end. Along with the grass, some other flavors of an earthy and floral nature come to the tongue with the caramel fading ever so slightly, in the end, leaving a rather crisp taste on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the medium to possibly slightly more creamy side with a carbonation level that on the slightly higher side. Overall it was a rather appropriate feel and was nice for the crisp taste and easy drinking flavors of the brew.

Overall – An easy drinker. Nothing exceptional, but nothing off putting either. Overall alright.

Hoppin' Helles is probably the most disappointing Leinenkugel effort I've experienced thus far. It bears that same sort of grassiness that I didn't like about Guinness's Harp Lager and that same kind of bitterness I find prevalent in many domestic beers. Not to mention, I always categorized Leinenkugel for its flavors, be them lemon, orange, lemon berry, or simply just refreshing and rather intoxicating hops, but Hoppin' Helles overdoes it to the point where the flavor is more of a nuisance than a presence. Definitely the weakest of Leinenkugel's otherwise surprisingly good line of beers.

Other than a faint dustiness, this beer is completely clear in its pale gold-brass body, and plenty bright. The head is a foamy white one with decent staying power, hold, and stick.
The aroma's a bit light but is herbal, somewhat mineral, bready, and reasonably hoppy with orange peel and pine.
The hops come out a little more strongly, floral and grassy with some almost spruce-like needle, against cracker and biscuit dry malts and some caramel. I'm not sure about achieving style, but it's pretty good.
It's moderately crisp in a light-medium body, appropriate and not thin. It's pretty smooth without losing the bite.
