341ml bottle poured into tulip.
Pours a clear, deep copper with one finger of tan head that leaves a decent sheet of foamy lace as it recedes.
Smells of nutmeg and cinnamon, caramel and brown sugar, ginger cookies, faint pumpkin flesh and soft herbal hops.
Tastes of more pumpkin pie filling, creamy caramel malt, ginger cookies, even fainter pumpkin flesh and more gentle leafy hop bitterness.
Feels mellow and mild. Medium bodied with fizzy carbonation. Finishes off-sweet.
Verdict: Recommended. Goes well with warm fall weather.

A beer with a bit of an edge. Subtle spices abound. A little watery, could be a bit more fully bodied. This brewer makes some excellent beers, but this one isn't quite as good.

I'm very happy they've begun selling this seasonal offerings in 4x341mL packs, rather than just the standard 650ml bombers. It's almost certainly my favourite pumpkin beer made by a Canadian brewer--just a very well-tuned, superb blend of actual pumpkin flavour and then the requisite pumpkin spices: nutmeg, cinnamon, clove, graham, vanilla are all here. I particularly like the subtlety of the clove--with other pumpkin beers, clove seems to take over; here it's one spice among many.

I'm thinking that the particular bottle I'm basing this review on is a bit old. There is not much in the way of carbonation or head, and it seems a bit off. I've tried this particular beer several times, so I'm going with the "old bottle" theory and trying to review this fairly. The aroma is quite nice - all of the things I love about pumpkin pie - pumpkin, a bit of spice, a bit of pastry. The flavour is equally lovely - malt, pumpkin, toffee and nutmeg. Alley Kat has done a nice job of combining these flavours - the end result is, quite literally, pumpkin pie in a glass.

Too much pumpkin spice in this beer for me.

Bottle poured into a pint glass. Pours an orange red with a white head. Nose is pumpkin and spice. The beer is very smooth in taste and mouthfeel. This was my first pumpkin beer. Not my favorite but not bad.

Bomber poured into a tulip glass. Ruddy bronze hue with two fingers of creamy light tan head. Aroma is mellow pumpkin, brown sugar, distinct hay-like grassy floral hops, cinnamon, nutmeg, a wisp of ginger. Palate is characterized by an overarching mellow sweet vibe, with no one flavor (pumpkin, spices, malts, hops) becoming overbearing or too dominant. The pumpkin comes through delicately fruity and is particularly noticeable in the finish. The spices are subtle and deliver a root beer or ginger snap effect without any unpleasant bitterness. The brown sugar or caramel note is more pronounced on the nose than in the mouth, although a condensed milk toffee-like sweetness does build over time. Tea-like hops in the finish. Moderate to thick body I'd say, with carbonation right in the mid-range. I am enjoying this pumpkin ale, appreciating the subtlety and balance across the different ingredients. Not the most robust in terms of pumpkin and spice flavors but this is where I tend to lean where this style is concerned.
