Notes/Commercial Description:
First brewed by Harvest Moon in 1997, this beer is a multiple award-winning dark ale brewed in the Burton, England style owing to the similarity of water chemistry in Belt compared to this classic porter producing area in England. Plenty of body without a sharp bite, this ale is brewed with pale, caramel, chocolate and black malts to create a creamy, smooth, roasted, slightly chocolate tasting ale with a touch of hops in the finish. This ale can be enjoyed in every season and is best when served cool, not cold. And why the name? While drinking this new brew one evening back in 1997, the local hog farmer showed up to collect our spent mash and we that what could be better for fattening pigs?

12oz bottle, a straggler from the Great U.S. Supermarket Cooler Border Run of 2010. I would probably have grabbed this anyways, but the name sure as hell didn't hurt.

This beer pours a clear, very dark reddish brown cola hue, with three fingers of thickly foamy, and somewhat chunky beige head, which falls away unevenly, leaving some dense, broadly webbed lace around the glass.

It smells of floral, haystack-esque hops, over a mildly toasted caramel malt base, with some subtle dry cocoa and day-old coffee notes. The taste is bittersweet milk chocolate, biscuity caramel malt, dry coffee beans, a hint of black licorice, and light citrusy, floral hops.

The carbonation is quite mild, just a lilting frothiness, the body medium-heavy in weight, smooth, and silky in its pleasant as the day is long creaminess. It finishes off-dry, the baker's chocolate and bready caramel malt still most evident.

A nice, generally balanced new-world take on the old-world porter - tasty, and it goes down easy as pie. If 'in a pig's eye' means unbelievable, then 'Pig's Ass' should then lend credence to this particular, um, 'rural' brewery's prowess.

This is a classic looking Porter, dark brown with amber-ish hues and a thick, tan colored head with nice 'n slow dissipation.

The aroma is a very earthy dark malt aroma, plenty of roastie herbals and dark wheat, the malt is dark but slightly sweet vanilla smell too. Right on.

The balance of this Porter is really nice, earthy, herbal, dry and crisp hop and yeast combo with all the right dark-wheat maltiness you might want. It also has a very nice complexity with light vanilla sweetness and oats to make a hearty blend for sure.

The feel is nearly full, but very approachable because it's not super hefty and thick (which I like even more). The finish is long and becomes dry at the end.

This is a classic American Porter, thanks to my good friend mike O for bringing these back from his road trip home!!

Poured into Sam Adams' lager glass; head was pronounced, but short lived (note: I had sampled a beer previously in this glass but rinsed); color was dark brown, with a hint of charcoal gray; the smell was somewhat sour and, frankly, not appetizing; the taste reminded me of tobacco, i.e. as if I were smoking a mild cigar, and had few hints of sweetness. I can't recall a Porter that was more disappointing than this one.

A: Pours a nearly jet black with a big fluffy off white head that hangs around a while.

S: Heavy roasted coffee aroma with a hint of milk chocolate.

T: Very smooth coffee flavor mixed with beautiful chocolate notes make this one damn fine brew.

D: This beer is pretty awesome, although it's almost more like a stout than a porter. Anyway very tasty and a good drink.

Poured into a pint glass from a 12oz bottle creating a finger width of head.
Beer is dark ebony in color and allows little to no light penetration through the glass.

Smells primarily of burnt dark chocolate and malt, with a slight hint of hops.

Taste is mostly chocolate and malt backed by a slight hop bitterness. Burnt chocolate aftertaste lingers long after swallowing.

Medium in body with a smooth slick mouthfeel.

This is one of my first forays into Porters and I really enjoyed it. Very tasty and quaffable.

A- This has an awesome name and label, which really help the cause! Best before date is indicated as well. Pours about as dark a brown as you can imagine...with tinges of red and copper around the rim. The lacing is excellent, with a sticky, viscous foam that really clings to the glass. My only disappointment is that the foamy head isn't really existent....just a thin layer formed, and turned into a ring around the glass.

S- The first thing I notice is an intense coffee aroma, reminiscent of an americano or cappucino. There is also some dark chocolate/cocoa bean aromas mixed in. This beer contains some smoked qualities as well, which remind me of a smoked gouda cheese or something.

T- Powerful dark chocolate malts, with a burnt/highly roasted chocolate/coffee flavor. There are also some notes of the aforementioned smokiness, as well as a hint of sweet malt, which balance this out. The finish is hopped well for the style, but it's the sticky sweetness that lingers on the palate afterward.

M- Surprisingly this was much lighter than I thought it would be. The carbonation is of fine bubbles, but maybe just a little too much of it that hits the palate right up front. The finish is smooth however and quite pleasant.

D- Lots of flavor packed into this one...a very solid porter. I don't think I'd have more than one of these at a time though, as the roasted qualities of the malt are quite dominant. Great meal beer and would go perfectly with a roast beef or stew. Anyone though that's really into the dry porters will very much enjoy this one. I do like this and would say that it's a great beer!

Had on tap at Many Glacier Hotel in GNP.

This is one hell of a porter. Great light brown head, nice thickness and subsequent lacing proves this was not timid by any stretch.

Great caramel notes and a bit of coffee but nothing over the top, very well balanced with a bit of hop. Pretty substantial stuff, not unlike a stout.

Seek this out if in MT and dig porters.

This was a great extra in a super trade with a77cj7.. Thanks a bunch Chris... I've had the beer dozens of times over the years and sent out growlers and many of 12'ers as extras, but somehow, I've never reviewed it. Cool stuff.

Poured into my Old Guardian goblet.... good 1" tan head.. nice lacing and cap atop a dark dark brown brew.

Dark malts.. minor dark fruits.. some descent cocoa and restrained dark malts... tastes "brown".. Reminds me of Anchor porter.

Thanks again Chris... You're a super trader... very recommended... Hook him up if you get a chance.

I am going to start with my negative, lest it get lost in this review... I was expecting something more like a Storm King because I was under the illusion that the ABV was higher... And yet it is quite OK I didn't get it. Storm King is a stout... um, pigass -- PORTER... So...

Appearance in a beer almost never seems to me to be able to make the 5.0... I mean what level of coloration can you reward when you are dealing with so many levels of brown? I think when my eyes start feeling dreamy, that is a 5.0. This looks good. It isn't stout pitch and seems quite to style. It wont give me an orgasm looking at it, but I cant think of a beer that would...

The aroma is rich and malty. Unlike some beers that taste decent and smell like a warm shoe, this smells more like something you'd want to drink.

Taste... I wanted to just give this a 5. But then I think of all the wonderful big beers with big flavor that have the kind of ABV i thought this had, and this doesn't head up. It is good! but I think the rich aroma is better than the flavor result in this case. It seems right for the style... and then I get torn. Right for the style, could be richer in flavor, but nicely balanced to deflect the ABV. But then I was wrong about the ABV.

It is a thinner beer, not like one of your big-mouth-beefies. Again, I think close to style and perhaps a little restrained by the high ABV. A pleasant roll on the molars.

Intangibles creep in to seal the deal... this $7 6-pack with no hint of the ABV on the label comes across much more like a $12 6-pack where I sit... partially looking a little silly at the review I am writing 2/3 the way in. If this were on tap on a nitro, I think i would order one IV to go. It isn't perfect, but it is pretty damned good and certainly worth a flier on a cooler spring day where you aren't looking for some pussy-whipped wheat to quell the heat. If your having a little trouble sleeping, it might be just the ticket... but SHARE the 6-pack...

But then I went to the place where they made it. The ABV was more like 6%. Well, that is to style. It explains the lighter mouth feel... the lesser vibrato in taste. it does not change these things, it EXPLAINS them. But adding up what I had in my mouth and how much I think it is outstanding, and how it should have a good rating TO STYLE... this one ranks...

Nice job from this brewery. if you don't like this, you are liking boring beer.
