One of my favorite Montana beers, this heavy hitter Imperial(8.7 ABV) has a well-balanced hoppy bitterness and malty sweetness for a smooth finish.

Poured from can into a pint glass

Appearance – The beer pours a hazy orange amber color with a one finger head of thick, just off white foam. The head has a fantastic level of retention, slowly fading over time to leave a great sum of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.

Smell – The aroma of the beer is quite potent with it hitting your nose upon cracking open the can. The smell is big of a tropical fruit smell of tangerine, pineapple and some mango. Along with these sweeter fruit smells comes some aromas of melon and a moderately strong hoppy smell with the hop being a nice mix of grapefruit, earth, and a floral aroma. A tiny bit of a yeasty smell rounds out the aroma, creating a rather sweet and inviting fruity hopped smell overall.

Taste – The taste begins just as the nose would have suggested with a good showing of a sweeter tropical fruit flavor of tangerine, pineapple, and mango with these tastes being mixed with a little bit of a caramel sweetness as well. There is a lighter bit of a grapefruit hop taste upfront, which creates a base hop taste for the brew. As the taste advances the tropical fruits and caramel fade a little bit, but are replaced by a melon sweetness which maintains an overall sweeter taste for the beer. Other hop flavors of a grassy and hay flavor join the grapefruit hop midway through the taste with a little bit of a yeasty taste coming along for the ride. With a bit of a bready and herbal flavor coming right at the end, one is left with a sweet and smooth, more tropical in nature fruit flavor to linger on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is thicker and chewier with a carbonation level that is on the lower side. For the big tropical fruits and sweeter flavors mixed with the more east coast style hop flavors of the beer, the feel was rather nice allowing all the rich flavors to coat the tongue furthermore helping to show of the blend of hoppy tastes.

Overall – This was a double IPA that I rather enjoyed. Not a hop heads dream, but for me it had a great hop presence all while having a sweet but balanced malt base to make this a very enjoyable and flavorful brew overall.

Alcohol, loads of caramel and bread, more alcohol linger, grainy with moderate bitterness and a sweet lingering finish.

great Montana ipa here, as much in the English vein as the American one as the grains go. four pack of pint cans is a welcome serving. the color of this is reddish brown, deeper brass than many, with over an inch of tan foam with fine retention and creamy feel. the nose is a little sweeter from the malt, but the hops are dominant as you would expect. bitter and citric, not as bright as some, or as forward, but this is about as balanced as a double ipa can be in both nose and taste. long lasting bitter finish is given additional legs by some malt sweetness, a big wintery feeling drink that packs quite the punch. a couple of these can get you loose, that's for sure. full bodied and well bubbly, the feel of this beer is outstanding. I will look for this again when I return to the great state of Montana.
